  • In this study, propeller open water characteristics ($K_P$, $K_T$ and ${\eta}_o$) were compared for three different ducted propellers using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, as well as an experimental test at a basin. The best shape of the duct was selected from the three types of specially designed ducts based on the CFD analysis results. The same propeller model (Kaplan type propeller) was used inside all three duct models, and the propeller open water characteristics were compared, predominantly at the design speed for an underwater vehicle. Finally, the results of the CFD test simulations for the selected duct case were verified by experimental open water tests in a towing tank.

  • In this paper, the thermodynamic performance of OTEC cycle was examined. Computer simulation programs were developed for simple Rankine cycle, regenerative Rankine cycle, Kalina cycle, open cycle and hybrid cycle. For the simple Rankine cycle, the results show that newly developed fluids such as R410A and R32 that do not cause stratospheric ozone layer depletion perform as well as R22 and ammonia. Also, simple Rankine cycle OTEC power plant can practically generate electricity when the difference in warm and cold sea water inlet temperatures are greater than $14^{\circ}C$. The regenerative Rankine cycle showed a 1.5 to 2% increase in energy efficiency compared to the simple Rankine cycle while the Kalina cycle employing ammonia/water mixture showed a 2-to-3% increase in energy efficiency, and the overall cycle efficiencies of hybrid cycle and open cycle were 3.35% and 4.86%, respectively.

  • In this study, the side reactions that greatly affect the coulombic efficiency of a zinc-air secondary battery are quantitatively analyzed on the basis of the charging-discharging characteristics, open circuit self-discharge characteristics, and a series of calculations. In particular, the charge amounts consumed by water electrolysis and self-discharge during charging process are separately determined so that the charging efficiency (the amount of charge used in actual charging with respect to the applied charge amount) can be estimated, which would enable systematic understanding of the cause of coulombic efficiency degradation. Using two cells with different charging overvoltages, the validity of the proposed method can be assessed.

  • This study aims to investigate the preferred sound level of water sound for various levels of open-plan-office noise regarding soundscape quality and speech privacy. And assessment of the work efficiency of the water sound. For the laboratory experiment, office noise was recorded using a binaural microphone in a real open-plan office. For the assessment of the soundscape quality and speech privacy, Overall Soundscape Quality (OSQ) and Listening Difficulty (LD) were evaluated under three different sound levels (55 dBA, 60 dBA, and 65 dBA) and five different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR -10 dB, -5 dB, 0 dB, +5 dB, and +10 dB). After the evaluation, the preferred SNR was proposed according to OSQ and LD. For the assessment of to work efficiency of water sound, this study evaluated the cognitive performance of both of the condition noise only and combine the water sound with office noise. The results showed that LD increased as the water sound level increased, but OSQ decreased. When the water sound level was more than the office noise level, the OSQ decreased from noise only. Therefore, considering OSQ and LD, the preferred SNR of water sound was -5 dB for all noise levels. At the preferred level of water sound, the cognitive performance results were shown to decrease at 55 dBA compared to noise only, but at 60 dBA and 65 dBA combine the water sound results were increased than the noise only.

  • To evaluate the pollutant removal efficiency and clarify the cause of low removal efficiency of the wetland, temporal and spacial distributions of water quality were investigated at 16 sites in the Sihwa constructed wetland. The removal efficiency showed a tendency to decrease since the construction of the wetland, except for TN. In addition, the efficiency was largely varied with season, especially BOD and TP. No removal efficiency of BOD was observed in April and July when algal bloom was occurred in lower part open water of the wetland. On the other hand, TP showed no removal efficiency from April to August showing -291% of removal efficiency in August. From the horizontal distribution in closed water regions, SS concentration for the central area was significantly higher than for left and right areas(p = 0.013, center > left > right areas). From the results of this study, we infer that anaerobic condition due to the excessive accumulation of organic matters and lack of uniformity of water flow distribution are major factors of the low removal efficiency of the wetland.

  • This study is to compare irrigation efficiency between sap flow sensor automated system (SF) and conventional irrigation system based on integrated solar radiation automated system (ISR) in tomato rockwool hydroponics. Total irrigated volumes was higher in the ISR system by 5.0L per plant, a lower drainage rate was found in the SF system, compared to the ISR system. There was no difference in shoot and fruit fresh weights, water use efficiency (WUE) and water amount consumed for producing 200g of tomato fruit. The daily average sap flow density (SFD) was closer to the change of solar irradiance (SI) in the plant grown under the SF system, compared to the ISR system. The correlation coefficient (r2) between the fruit diameter and the volumetric water content during the 56 and 82 days after transplant showed the SF treatment was higher than the ISR at night and daytime, and the correlation was higher at night time. The sap flow density and humidity deficit (HD) of SF treatment was related as closely as the solar irradiance. Further studies should demonstrate that SF irrigation system is a convenient method for hydroponic farmers with advantages, such as growth, higher yield, WUE, and accuracy.

  • Efficient water operation and management of an irrigation system plays an important element in the sustainability of irrigated agriculture. An agricultural water is delivered in many open canals of irrigation delivery system by reservoirs. The poor water distribution and management in an irrigation system is a major factor leading to low water efficiency. It is necessary to compare the estimated irrigation demands with the actual water supplies for decision making to maintain the water supply according to demand strategy. Smarter water management, new technologies and improvement of water management system, is essential to solve the problem of water efficiency and availability. In this paper, the irrigation efficiencies according to water delivery performance indicator were measured with automatic water gauge at irrigation canals, and calculated from spatial and temporal distribution of water supply for the lack of planning in water delivery. The analysis of results are obtain an insight into possible improvement methods to develop canal water management policies that enable irrigation planners to optimally manage scarce available water resources.

  • Water aeration is an effective water treatment process, which involves the injection of air or air-water mixture into water treatment reservoir commonly through pipes. The main purpose of water aeration is to maintain healthy levels of dissolved oxygen (DO), which is the most important water quality factor. The pipes' operating conditions are important for controlling the efficiency and effectiveness of aeration process. Many studies have been conducted on two-phase flows in pipes, however, there are a few studies to deal with small s ale in millimeter. The main objective of this study is to perform 2-dimensional two-phase simulations inside various straight pipes using the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) OpenFOAM (Open source Field Operation And Manipulation) tools to examine the influence of flow patterns on bubble size, which is closely related to DO concentration in a water body. The both flow regimes, laminar and turbulence, have been considered in this study. For turbulence, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) has been applied. The coalescence and breakage of bubbles caused by random collisions and turbulent eddies, respectively, are considered in this research. Sauter mean bubble diameter and water velocity are compared against experimental data. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental measurements.

  • In this study, the attraction efficiency of the by-pass fishway installed at Dalseong Weir in Nakdong River was assessed according to operation of the attraction waterway by using River2D which is a two-dimensional physical habitat simulation model. The model was calibrated and validated through the measured water elevation. The attraction efficiency of the fishway was evaluated at the low flow condition because the target fish, Zacco platypus (Z. platypus), have moved frequently up and downstream at the spawning season from April to June. From simulation results, it can be deduced that the attraction efficiency at situation of open attraction waterway is superior to that of close attraction waterway. Also it is shown that velocity field at inner region of the fishway is suitable for migration of the fish.

  • A prototype of 76 ha Shi-hwa constructed wetland was constructed for the first time in Korea to purify severely polluted stream water. Hydrology, vegetation(macrophyte) and water quality for Banwol and Donghwa wetland built in Shi-hwa tidal reclaimed area were monitored to evaluate the performance of the wetlands. The overall efficiency for the treatment of polluted stream water using the wetlands showed no significant improvement. The monthly average removal rates on SS, BOD, TN and TP for Banwol and Donghwa wetlands showed 66.5% and 62.8%, 14.8 and 34.3%, 33.9 and 47.1% and 20.8 and 51.6%, respectively. It is considered that three major factors, ie. wide fluctuations in inflow rate, short hydraulic retention time and small open area compared with vegetated area could have a great influence on low system efficiency.
