  • Technological adaption and innovative activities foster small and medium enterprises (SMEs) growth, especially women-owned SMEs in Pakistan, However, the impact of technological adaption and innovative activities on SMEs growth in the context of Pakistan has been examined by very researchers. This study aims to identify the effect of technology and open innovation policies on the growth of women-owned SMEs and the present trends and management challenges for successful full implementation of open innovation. The study considered a sample of 693 women enterprises located in different cities in Pakistan. Open innovation is measured through eight innovative practices, reflecting the exploration and exploitation of technology in SMEs. Study findings revealed that women enterprises were involved in several open innovation policies during the last five years. Moreover, the study indicated no significant differences between manufacturing and service SMEs regarding open innovation practices; however, women enterprises are more impressively engaged in open innovation practices. Findings also reveal that women-owned SMEs follow open innovation, mainly for market-related intentions, to compete with competitors and meet customers' demands. Thus, it is suggested that government policy relating to thriving SMEs owned by women should be innovation-oriented. The study contributes to the theoretical and practical implications. Further, the study is helpful for SMEs, researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers.

  • In this paper, we try to explore the nature of open source software development process. The process involves peculiar characteristics which seem to defy the traditional economic reasoning for technology policy. Based upon the comparative case study of open source software development process with the two innovation processes adopted from literature on economic history, we argue that technology policy should strike the balance between provision of innovation incentives and voluntary disclosure of information.

  • Recently the open innovation is considered as one of the important issues for the survival strategy of a company in the industry. There have been several researches and practices on this topic. However, previous researches are mainly focused on the study of successful cases and some statistical analyses on the relationship between the open innovation and its performance. There are rare researches on the hindrance factors in the practical level. This paper tries to find some hinderance factors for the open innovation in Korean large-scale companies based on the WFGM(Want-Find-Get-Manage) model proposed by Gene Slowinski(2006). Especially this research focused on each processes of open innovation by in-depth interviews for two representative large companies in Korea. From the result of this research we come to know that the critical hindrance factor in the WANT step is the uncertain definition of the necessary technologies for the company. Issues on establishing and maintaining the innovation network are in the FIND step. Technology evaluation, technology introduction channel and technology copying issues are in the GET step. Communication issues, technology feasibility and lack of competition are in the MANAGE step. This paper finds some hindrance factors in each process step of open innovation, which gives some implications for the companies that want to adopt open innovation.

  • This study explores the effect of open innovation activities on innovation performance by dividing into two dimensions of breadth and depth of open innovation activity, and it also verifies the mediating effect of technical protection between open innovation activities and innovation performance. In order to examine the hypothesis, it has surveyed 1,403 companies of manufacturing and service with experience in producing innovative results. The results find that the breadth of open innovation activities has a positive effect on the achievement of radical innovation, and the depth of open innovation activities brings a positive effect on the achievement of incremental innovation. The verification result of the mediating effect of technology protection indicates that partially mediated between the breadth of innovation activities and radical innovation activities, and in the case of the depth, it is completely mediated. The results of this study provide the crucial implications not only for the company promoting open innovation, but especially also for the companies promoting product innovation by acquiring technology.

In response, this paper suggests the open roadmap to systematically and usefully implement open innovation. The open roadmap deals with both inbound and outbound open innovation activities. Moreover, in the inbound and outbound open innovation, six types of the open roadmap are proposed in terms of sources of innovation. The proposed open roadmap is applied to a case of open innovation in the P&G corporation for examining its usefulness and validation. It is expected that the open roadmap provides fruitful information when open innovation is done.

  • This study reviews the institutional frameworks of Open Source software and develops the stylized facts of Open Source software innovation. Open Source software have to solve two difficult problems for encouraging innovation. First, the source code of Open Source software program should be open and freely distributed and it is very difficult for developers to appropriate the results of their investments. Second, as Open Source software development process is characterized by the participation of communities of developers, it is not easy to coordinate and manipulate the development process. These difficulties of developing Open Source Software have been solved by the particular incentive schemes and coordinating mechanisms. This study reviews the study on the motivation of Open Source software development and the mechanisms which coordinate innovation process of Open Source software with peer review and meritocracy, and how these characteristics promote innovation in Open Source software communities.

  • This study explores the role of the think tank as an intermediary organization in the open innovation system. Think tank has contributed to the policy process as a mediator between government and public and as a symbolic entity of intellectual innovation to produce knowledge to the public. As the innovation system matures, one of the major challenges in research and practice is the openness and collaboration in the science, technology, and innovation system. While previous literature highlighted the think tank as the knowledge arbitrager transforming ideas into policy issues, few studies address the research questions: Is the conventional role of the think tank still persistent in the open innovation system? What are the demanding roles? This paper tackles these questions by reviewing the current role of the South Korean think tank in the science & technology sector. Based on the open innovation framework, we suggest that think tanks need to play a bigger role as policy entrepreneurs, crossing policy borders and interacting with other partners.

  • As global competition is heating up and product life cycle has been rapidly shortened, each company pursues a variety of competitive technology innovations through different means of innovation. In this study, we assume that open innovation can be a shift motive of the technology innovation paradigm of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) being beyond the limitations of R&D within a company. We analyze the process and content of open innovation and performance. In addition, we identify the problems generated in the open innovation process and analyze the ways to strengthen open innovation. This study is based on the investigations into the technological competitiveness of local SMEs. The innovation ecosystem is analyzed from the perspective of product/service innovation, organizational innovation, and marketing innovation. Situational analysis is presented on the relationship between the innovation capabilities of information and communication technology SMEs and innovation performance.
