Research Trend Analysis of the Retail Industry: Focusing on the Department Store (유통업태 연구동향 분석: 백화점을 중심으로)

  • Purpose: As one of the continuous studies on the offline distribution industry, the purpose of this study is to find ways for offline stores to respond to the growth of online shopping by identifying research trends on department stores. Research design, data and methodology: To this end, this study conducted word frequency analysis, word co-occurrence frequency analysis, BERTopic, LDA, and dynamic topic modeling using Python 3.7 on a total of 551 English abstracts searched with the keyword 'department store' in scienceON as of October 10, 2022. Results: The results of word frequency analysis and co-occurrence frequency analysis revealed that research related to department stores frequently focuses on factors such as customers, consumers, products, satisfaction, services, and quality. BERTopic and LDA analyses identified five topics, including 'store image,' with 'shopping information' showing relatively high interest, while 'sales systems' were observed to have relatively lower interest. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, it was concluded that research related to department stores has so far been conducted in a limited scope, and it is insufficient to provide clues for department stores to secure competitiveness against online platforms. Therefore, it is suggested that additional research be conducted on topics such as the true role of department stores in the retail industry, consumer reinterpretation, customer value and lifetime value, department stores as future retail spaces, ethical management, and transparent ESG management.

  • The outpaced growth of online channel sales over the traditional retail sales is a result from superior shopping convenience that online stores offer to their customers. One major source of online shopping convenience is a personalized store that reduces customer's shopping time. personalization of an online store is accomplished by using various in-store shopping behavior data that the Internet and Web Technology provides. Brick-and-mortar retailers have not been able to make this type of data available for their stores until now. However, RFID technology has now opened a new possibility to personalization of traditional retail stores. In this paper, we propose BRIMPS (BRIck-and-Mortar Personalization System) as a system that brick-and-mortar retailers may use to personalize their business and become more competitive against online retailers.

  • DongDaeMoon fashion retail market, or so-called the new western market, has been playing an important role in DongDaeMoon area's success from 1997 to early 2000's. However, the unique and successful fashion merchandising system of DongDeaMoon retail market has been seriously threatened by consumer need changes as well as by an increased competition from new types of retail stores such as discount stores and online shopping malls. Moreover, its performance has been deteriorated due to the increased number of undifferentiated, small and medium-sized retail stores within the area. In this paper, attempts are made in building revitalization strategies for DongDeaMoon fashion retail market on the basis of analyzing fast fashion and consumers. As results, we found that DongDaeMoon fashion retail market needs cooperated area management plan from related market members. This will help DongDaemoon's image change from deal-oriented market to relationship-oriented market with consumers. Through Focus Group interview, we found DongDeaMoon fashion retail market is confronted with insufficient shopping infrastructure and new challenge from global fast fashion brand. Moreover, to overcome this situation, consumers require repaired communication activities by DongDeaMoon fashion market members on consumer relationship management basis. At the end, this paper try to provide strategic implications for DongDeaMoon fashion retailers.

The Impact of Service Perceptions and Product Perceptions on the Formation of Fashion Internet Shoppers' Satisfaction and Purchasing Behavioral Intentions

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the service and product perceptions' dimensions for fashion retail sites and to identify the service and product perceptions' dimensions influencing consumers' satisfaction and purchasing behavioral intentions for fashion retail sites. A set of self-administered questionnaires were e-mailed to an internet Research Panel consisting of members who had purchased fashion products or visited fashion retail sites. 799 questionnaires were analysed using frequency, percentage, exploratory factor analysis. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, stepwise regression analysis utilizing SPSS 10.0. The service perception dimensions of fashion retail sites had reliability, convenience, incentive, responsiveness and tangibility. Online fashion product perception dimensions were product variety and product value. Consumer satisfaction was influenced by reliability, product variety, product value, convenience, incentive and responsiveness. Consumer satisfaction had a direct impact on purchasing behavioral intentions of fashion retail sites.

A Comparative Study on the Performance of Retailers in Korea: Focus on the Growth of Non-­store e-­commerce Business (우리나라 소매업태 간의 경영성과에 관한 비교 연구 - 무점포통신판매업의 성장을 중심으로 -)

  • This study addresses the management performance of the retail industry in Korea. The Non-store e-commerce business, consisting of TV home shopping and online shopping, grew very fast during the 2000s. For roughly six years in the 2010s, the diversification of online shopping business models, intensifying competition, and the proliferation of competition accelerated the entry of offline shopping retailers. During the analysis period from 2001 to 2016, the performance of the Non-­store e-commerce business was statistically better than that of the offline shopping retail business, department stores, general retailers, and small­-sized retailers. As expected, a significant difference between performance and some of the indicators of growth and activity could be seen because of the capital and operating structure of the retail industry. In particular, the Non-store e-commerce businesses have diverse sales media and heterogeneous business models. In this study, we have presented the significance of the differences in the indicators of operating profit and inventory turnover, as well as the discussion required for managing in the future.

A Path Analytic Exploration of Consumer Information Search in Online Clothing Purchases (온라인 의복구매를 위한 소비자 정보탐색의 경로분석적 탐구)

  • This study identified types of information source, and explored a path model for consumer information search by shopping attributes in the context of online decision making. Participants completed self-administered questionnaires during regularly scheduled classes. A total of 219 usable questionnaires were obtained from respondents who enroll at universities in the southwestern region of the United States. For data analysis, factor analysis and path model estimation were used. Consumer information source was classified into three types for online clothing purchases: Online source, Offline retail source, and Mass media. Consumers were more likely to rely on offline retail source for online clothing purchases, than other sources. In consumer information search by shopping attributes, online sources were more likely to be related to transaction-related attributes(e.g., incentive service), whereas offline retail source(e.g., displays in stores, manufacturer's catalogs and pamphlets) were more likely to be related to product and market related attributes(e.g., aesthetics, price) when purchasing clothing online. Also, the path model emphasizes the effect of shopping attributes on traditional retailer search behavior, leading to online purchase intention for clothing. This study supports consumer information search by attributes, and discusses a managerial implication of multi-channel retailing for apparel.

An Efficiency Analysis of Integrated Online and Offline Operations of Listed Retail Companies -Focusing on 28 listed retail companies in China- (상장 소매업체의 온라인·오프라인 통합 운영 효율성 분석 -중국 28개 상장 소매업체를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the efficiency of on-off-line integrated operations of listed retailers, propose ways to identify and improve the problems of inefficient enterprises, and accelerate the integration of on-off-line. The 28 listed retail companies selected total capital, management expenses, number of employees and wage rates as input factors as of 2018 and total operating income and operating profit were selected as output indicators to analyze efficiency using DEA. The results show that the integrated enterprise has a higher overall level of operational efficiency, but it is still in a state of stagnation. The pure technical efficiency of the integrated enterprise is generally higher, and the scale efficiency is the main reason that the overall efficiency of the enterprise is not improved. This study can help retail companies adjust their development strategies of online and offline integration according to their own degree of online and offline integration. This study has limitations in explaining the change in efficiency of retailers by conducting a cross-sectional analysis using data limited to 2018. It is necessary to utilize data over the next several years to conduct a longitudinal analysis.

A study about the effects of online commerce on the local retail commercial area (온라인 거래의 증가가 지역 소매 상권에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze quantitatively and qualitatively the effects of the increase in online shopping and its effects on real-world commercial outlets. The empirical analysis of this study is based on the results of "Census on Establishments" and "Online Shopping Survey" that cover 15 years, from 2002 to 2016. According to the results of this study, the increase in the number of online transactions affects the decrease in the number of stores in the real-world retail sector. However, non-specialized large stores and chain convenience stores showed an increase in the number of stores. In addition, the number of F&B stores increased the most in line with the increase in online transactions. This is because the increase in online transactions and in internet users led to the use of more delivery applications and the introduction of popular places on blogs or through social media. Street-level rents for medium and large-sized locations increased. In other words, it is seen that the demand for differentiated real-world stores that provide a good user experience increases, even though online transactions also increase. These results suggest that real-world stores should provide good user experiences in their physical locations with a certain size and assortment of goods.

Effect of Eco-Friendly Retail Visual Congruence on Trust

  • Growing environmental awareness around the world has made environmental issues increasingly important in business. While most past research has focused on consumers' sustainable morals and lifestyles as the main motivations for eco-friendly consumption, few studies have examined the effect of traditional marketing programs on sustainable consumption. In this study, the author posited that delicate visual cues in store retail environments, particularly visual cues of the store interiors, affect the ways consumers evaluate the brand. The author specifically tested the effect of visual congruence, or the perceived fit between brands and visual cues in retail atmospheres, on perceived brand image and trust. The results of the online survey of 622 U.S. consumers indicated that visual congruence has a significant positive effect on consumer trust in the brand. The author also hypothesized that environmental concerns would moderate the relationships. consumers' subjective environmental concerns do not moderate the positive effect of visual congruence on trust in the brand.

  • Purpose: The main purpose of this research is to examine the effect of impulse buying tendencies toward impulse buying, which is mediated by an urge to buy and moderated by the gender of the retail customers. Research design, data and methodology: This study uses a survey design. The sample consisted of several mall customers in Yogyakarta. Purposive sampling was used as the sampling technique. Data collection was carried out in two ways, distributing questionnaires online and directly giving questionnaires to mall customers. Results: The results of data analysis using structural equation modeling show that: 1). Impulse buying tendencies have a positive and significant effect on the urge to buy and impulse buying, 2). The effect of impulse buying tendencies on impulse buying were mediated by an urge to buy and moderated by gender. Conclusions: Theoretical implications of this research strengthen the concept/theory concerning the relationship of the impulse buying tendencies, urge to buy and impulse buying. The results of the study have some managerial implications. It can be used to reference retail store business in increasing the volume of retail customers purchases through impulse buying. The retail businesses can increase impulse buying which will trigger impulsive purchases and the company's sales and profitability
