Three-dimensional wind field and atmospheric dispersion models have been developed for estimating the concentration distributions of radioactive materials released into atmosphere. The field tracer experiment near the Kori nuclear power plant located over complex terrain was carried out for validating the atmospheric dispersion model. The wind fields were one of the most important factors for calculating the concentration. Therefore several numerical simulations using the measured wind data were performed to get more accurate concentration distributions compared with the analyzed values of the tracer gas. The calculated concentration distributions agreed well in the case of the usage of the more measured wind data in wind field model.
The importance of unsaturated state in various geo-engineering problems has led to the advance of mechanical constitutive model emulating behavior of unsaturated soils in response to thermo-hydro-mechanical loading. Elasto-plastic mechanical constitutive model for unsaturated soil is formulated based on Bishop's effective stress. Effective stress and temperature are main variables in constitutive equation, and incremental formulation of constitutive relationship is derived to compute stress update and stiffness tensor. Numerical simulations involving coupled THM processes are conducted to discuss numerical stability and applicability of developed constitutive model: one-dimensional test, tri-axial compression test, and clay-buffering at high level radioactive waste disposal. Numerical results demonstrated that developed model can predict very complex behavior of coupled THM phenomena and is applicable to geo-engineering problems under various environmental conditions, as well as interpret typical behavior of unsaturated soils.

In most researches on the ride comfort analysis of passenger vehicles, the flexibility of the vehicle body has been not considered as an important factor, because the resonance frequencies of the vehicle body related to pitching, yawing and rolling motions are below 10Hz while the resonance frequencies of the vehicle body related to the flexibility are above 20Hz approximately. Nevertheless, the paper shows that the consideration of the local flexibility (or local stiffness) of the 4 corners on which shock absorbers are mounted influences the ride comfort. A simple beam model is devised to qualitatively examine the effect of the change of the local stiffness of the vehicle body on the ride comfort. Based on the results obtained from the analysis of the one-dimensional model, multi-body dynamic analysis considering the flexibility of the vehicle body is performed using ADAMS and MSC/NASTRAN. Natural frequencies and mode shapes computed by MSC/NASTRAN are used as input data for multi-body dynamic analysis in ADAMS. Through simulations using ADAMS, it has been found that the ride comfort can be improved by changing the local stiffness of the vehicle body and that the simulation results agree with experiment results.
The height and speed of the shock wave are critical data in flood-control operations or in the design of channel walls and bridges along rivers with high flow velocities. Therefore, a numerical model is needed for simulating flow discontinuity over a wide range of conditions. In this study, a governing equation. As a Riemann solver Roe(1981)'s one is used. The model employs the modified MUSCL for handling the unstructured grids in this research. this model that adopts the explicit tradditional twl dimmensional dam break problems, two hydraulic dam break model is simulations, and a steady state simulation in a curved channel. Conclusions of this research are as follows : 1) the finite volume method can be combined with the Godonov-type method that is useful for modeling shocks. Hence, the finite volume method is suitable for modeling shocks. 2) The finite volume model combined with the modified MUSCL is successful in modeling shock. Therefore, modified MUSCL is proved to be valid.

Significant progress in the oil and gas industry advances the application of pipeline into an intelligent era, which poses rigorous requirements on pipeline safety, reliability, and maintainability, especially when crossing seismic zones. In general, strike-slip faults are prone to induce large deformation leading to local buckling and global rupture eventually. To evaluate the performance and safety of pipelines in this situation, numerical simulations are proved to be a relatively accurate and reliable technique based on the built-in physical models and advanced grid technology. However, the computational cost is prohibitive, so one has to wait for a long time to attain a calculation result for complex large-scale pipelines. In this manuscript, an efficient and accurate surrogate model based on machine learning is proposed for strain demand prediction of buried X80 pipelines subjected to strike-slip faults. Specifically, the support vector regression model serves as a surrogate model to learn the high-dimensional nonlinear relationship which maps multiple input variables, including pipe geometries, internal pressures, and strike-slip displacements, to output variables (namely tensile strains and compressive strains). The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method are validated by numerical studies considering different effects caused by structural sizes, internal pressure, and strike-slip movements.
Tall buildings are often subjected to steady and unsteady forces due to external wind flows. Measurement and mitigation of these forces becomes critical to structural design in engineering applications. Over the last few decades, many approaches such as modification of the external geometry of structures have been investigated to mitigate wind-induced load. One such proven geometric modification involved the rounding of sharp corners. In this work, we systematically analyze the impact of rounded corner radii on the reducing the flow-induced loading on a square cylinder. We perform 3-Dimensional (3D) simulations for high Reynolds number flows (Re=1 × 105) which are more likely to be encountered in practical applications. An Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES) method capable of capturing flow accurately at large Reynolds numbers is employed in this study. The IDDES formulation uses a k-ω Shear Stress Transport (SST) model for near-wall modelling that prevents mesh-induced separation of the boundary layer. The effects of these corner modifications are analyzed in terms of the resulting variations in the mean and fluctuating components of the aerodynamic forces compared to a square cylinder with no geometric changes. Plots of the angular distribution of the mean and fluctuating coefficient of pressure along the square cylinder's surface illustrate the effects of corner modifications on the different parts of the cylinder. The windward corner's separation angle was observed to decrease with an increase in radius, resulting in a narrower and longer recirculation region. Furthermore, with an increase in radius, a reduction in the fluctuating lift, mean drag, and fluctuating drag coefficients has been observed.

Safety of reactive systems is one of the most important research areas in the field of weapon development. A NoGo response or at least a low-order explosion should be ensured to prevent unexpected accidents when the reactive system is impacted by high-velocity projectile. We investigated the shock-induced detonation of cased reactive systems subject to a normal projectile impact to the cylindrical surface based on two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations using the I&G chemical rate law. Two types of energetic materials, namely LX-17 and AP-based solid propellant, were considered to compare the dynamic responses of the reactive system when subjected to the threshold impact velocity. It was found that shock-to-detonation transition phenomena occurred in the cased LX-17, whereas no full reaction occurred in the propellant.
In joint portions of the levee and the barrier, complex 3-dimensional flow was generated and collapse of revetment occurred frequently. For these reasons, it is necessary to install the joint revetment with greater stability as compared with the general revetment at the joint portions. However, design criteria for joint revetment was not presented in River Design Criteria (KWRA, 2009). Therefore it is necessary to research for engineering design of the joint revetment. In this study, hydraulic experiments were performed under various flow conditions in order to realize the collapse conditions of riprap and carried out in 20.0 m straight open channel with one side levee and the width was 4.0 m. The diameter of riprap covered around joint revetment was 0.03 m and the inlet discharges were $0.5{\sim}0.8m^3/s$. The numerical simulations were performed under same conditions with experiment. as results of this numerical simulations, the influence range was confirmed from the distribution of flow characteristics and shear stress. As a result, the riprap diameter of the joint revetment was calculated from 4.1 to 6.9 times greater than that of general revetment. As the inlet discharge was large, the range of vulnerable area was developed long in the downstream direction despite of same withdrawal velocity of riprap. Through this study, the methods of calculating the riprap diameter and influence range were proposed according to hydraulic characteristics of flow around joint revetment. At a later study, if additional experiments about effect of flood plane and various types of barrier is applied, it is expected that rational design method with stability of joint revetment can be proposed.

Traffic accident collision interpretation is composed of various shapes, and speed variations working to the vehicle during collision are utilized as a very important factor in evaluating collision degrees between vehicles and safety of passengers who got in the vehicle. So, methods of interpreting results on speed variations utilizing simulation programs on the collision interpretation become necessary. By the way, reliability evaluation on each program is being required because various collision interpretations simulations are spread widely. This study utilized collision interpretation programs such as EDSMAC and PC-CRASH adopting completely different physical approaches, and then carried out collision experiments of one-dimensional front and two-dimensional right angle while changing values of a lot of collision factors such as vehicle's weight, center of gravity, rolling resistance, stiffness coefficient, and braking forces among early input conditions. Also, the study recognized effects of collision factors to speed variations as output results during crashing. As a result of this research, two simulation programs showed same speed variations together on the vehicle's weight, center of gravity, and braking forces. Stiffness coefficient of the vehicle reacted to EDSMAC only, and rolling resistance coefficient did not affect any particular influences on speed variations. However, there appeared a bit comparative differences from the speed variation's values, and this is interpreted as responding outcomes by applying fixed properties values to each simulation program plainly. Therefore, reliability on analysis of traffic accident collisions shall be improved by doing speed analysis after taking the fixed value of simulation programs into consideration.
Algal blooms in lakes are one of major environmental issues in Korea. A three-dimensional, hydrodynamic and water quality model was developed and tested in Lake Euiam to assess the performance and limitations of numerical modeling with multiple algal groups using field data commonly collected for algal management. In this study, EFDC was adopted as the basic model framework. Simulated vertical profiles of water temperature, dissolved oxygen and nutrients monitored at five water quality monitoring stations from March to October 2013, which are closely related to algal dynamics simulation, showed good agreement with those of observed data. The overall spatio-temporal variations of three algal groups were reasonably simulated against the chlorophyll-a levels of those estimated from the limited monitoring data (chlorophyll-a level and cell numbers of algal species) with the RMSEs ranging from 2.6 to $17.5mg/m^3$. Also, note that $PO_4-P$ level in the water column was a key limiting factor controlling the growth of three algal groups during most of simulation period. However, the algal modeling results were not fully attainable to the levels of observation during short periods of time showing abrupt increase in algae throughout the lake. In particular, the green algae/cyanobacteria and diatom simulations were underestimated in late June to early July and early October, respectively. The results shows that better understanding of internal algal processes, neglected in most algal modeling studies, is necessary to predict the sudden algal blooms more accurately because the concentrations of external $PO_4-P$ and specific algal groups originated from the tributaries (mainly, dam water releases) during the periods were too low to fully capture the sharp rise of internal algal levels. In this respect, this study suggests that future modeling efforts should be focused on the quantification of internal cycling processes including vertical movement of algal species with respect to changes in environmental conditions to enhance the modeling performance on complex algal dynamics.
