The multi-point forming (MPF) process for three-dimensional curved sheet metal has been developed as an alternative to the conventional die forming process since MPF allows the manufacturing of various shapes using one die set and reduce the cost of production. However, the MPF process cannot provide high quality products yet due to defects occurring in the sheet such as dimples and wrinkles. It can also lead to economic loss because of long tool setup time and additional machining required outside of the sheet formed area. In this study, a new sheet metal forming method, called flexible roll forming (FRF), is proposed to solve the problems of existing processes for three-dimensional curved sheet metal. This progressive process utilizes adjusting rods, as well as upper and lower flexible rollers as forming tools. In contrast with the existing processes, FRF can reduce the additional production costs because of the possible blank size for the part longitudinal direction, which is unrestricted. In this research, methods and procedures of the flexible roll forming technology are described. Numerical forming simulations of representative three-dimensional curved sheet products are also carried out to demonstrate the feasibility of this technology.

This paper discusses the feasibility of improving micro-machining accuracy by using two-dimensional(2-D) vibration cutting. Vibration cutting is generated by two piezo actuators arranged orthogonally : one is actuated by a sine curve voltage input, and the other is actuated by a phase-shifted sine curve voltage. A tool attached to the vibrator oscillates in a 2-D elliptical motion, depending on the frequencies, amplitudes, and the phase shifts of two input signals and the workpiece feedrate. Along the elliptical tool locus, cutting is done in the lower part, and non-cutting is done in the upper part. By this way a unique feature of 2-D vibration cutting, that is, air lubrication between a tool and chips, is caused. Another unique feature of 2-D vibration cutting was experimentally verified, that is, some negative thrust force occurs as the direction of chip movement on a tool rake face is reversed. Those features not only help chips flow smoothly and continuously but also reduce cutting force, which results in a higher quality machined surface. Through tool path simulations and experiments under several micro-machining conditions, the 2-D vibration cutting, compared to conventional cutting, was found to result in a great decrease in the cutting force, a much smoother surface, and much less burr.

Turbulent flow characteristics and heat transfer in a three-dimensional room with a desk-type heat generating obstacle have been investigated numerically by the k-$\varepsilon$ two equation turbulence model. The room mole has one supply opening on the ceiling and two exhaust openings on the side walls. Th results of the flow structure and heat transfer have been represented for air for the inlet velocities in the range 0.1-10.0m/s. As the results of the three dimensional simulations, the relationships between mean Nusselt number and Reynolds number are clarified.

A three-dimensional(3D) Monte Carlo simulator for boron ion implantation into <100>single-crystal silicon considering the mask structure has been developed to predict the mask-dependent impurity doping profiles of the implanted boron at low energies into the reduced area according to the trend of a reduction in the size of semiconductor devices. All relevant important parameters during ion implantation have been taken into account in this simulator. These are incident energy, tilt and rotation of wafer, orientation of silicon wafer, presence of native silicon dioxide layer, dose, wafer temperature, ion beam divergence, masking thickness, and size and structure of open window in the mask. The one-dimensional(1D) results obtained by using the 3D simulator have been compared with the SIMS experiments to demonstrate its capabilities and confirem its reliability, and we obtained relatively accurate 1D doping profiles. Through these 3D simulations considering the hole structure and its size, we found the mask effects during boron ion implantation process.

We developed a high-efficiency, wide-operating-range centrifugal blower stage to meet the demand for reduced total energy-consumption in sewage treatment plants. We improved the efficiency of the two-dimensional impeller using a shape optimization tool and one-dimensional performance prediction tool. A limit of the throat deceleration ratio was set to maintain the stall-margin of the impeller. The low solidity vaned diffuser and return channel were designed using a sensitivity analysis with orthogonal arrays and three-dimensional steady flow simulations. The low solidity diffuser was designed in order to improve the performance in the low-flow-rate region. The return channel was designed so that the total pressure loss in the return channel was minimized. Model tests of both the conventional and optimized blower stages were carried out, and the efficiency and operating range of both stages were compared. The optimized blower stage improved in stage efficiency by 3% and in operating range by 5% compared with the conventional blower stage.
An accurate analysis of pipeline transient is important for proper management and operation of a water distribution systems. The computational accuracy and its cost are two distinct components for unsteady flow analysis model, which can be strength and weakness of three-dimensional model and one-dimensional model, respectively. In this study, we used two-dimensional unsteady flow model with Five-Region Turbulence model (FRTM) with the implementation of interaction between liquid and air Since FRTM has an empirical component to be determined, we explored the response feature of two-dimensional flow model. The relationship between friction behaviour and the variation of undetermined parameter was configured through the comparison between numerical simulations and experimental results.
Traditional works on indexing have been suggested for low dimensional data under dynamic environments. But recent database applications require efficient processing of huge sire of high dimensional data under static environments. Thus many indexing strategies suggested especially in partitioning ones do not adapt to these new environments. In our study, we point out these facts and propose a new partitioning strategy, which complies with new applications' requirements and is derived from analysis. As a preliminary step to propose our method, we apply a packing technique on the one hand and exploit observations on the Minkowski-sum cost model on the other, under uniform data distribution. Observations predict that unbalanced partitioning strategy may be more query-efficient than balanced partitioning strategy for high dimensional data. Thus we propose our method, called CSP (Cyclic Spliced Partitioning method). Analysis on this method explicitly suggests metrics on how to partition high dimensional data. By the cost model, simulations, and experiments, we show excellent performance of our method over balanced strategy. By experimental studies on other indices and packing methods, we also show the superiority of our method.

In this work we present a one-dimensional damage model capable of representing the dynamic fracture for elastodamage bar with combined hardening in fracture process zone - FPZ and softening with embedded strong discontinuities. This model is compared with another one we recently introduced (Do et al. 2015) and it shows a good agreement between two models. Namely, it is indicated that strain-softening leads to a sensitivity of results on the mesh discretization. Strain tends to localization in a single element which is the smallest possible area in the finite element simulations. The strain-softening element in the middle of the bar undergoes intense deformation. Strain increases with increasing mesh refinement. Strain in elements outside the strain-softening element gradually decreases to zero.

A model for the transient one-dimensional moisture movement in the saturated-unsaturated zone using a finite difference method is developed. Hysteresis in the soil water retention is incorporated. The model considers layered geologic formations. Monte Carlo simulation, together with the nearest neighbor model is used. Outputs of the model include pressure head, water content, and the water table elevation. Two Monte Carlo simulations of 100 realizations each are made for a 12-day simulation period with different input values. The simulation results show that the S.D. of the outputs increases with an increase in the input, the S.D. of the log K$$. The model is applied to predict a long term water table fluctuation, and the predicted water table agress well with the observed one.

Chemical mechanical planarization is one of the core processes in fabrication of semiconductors, which are increasingly used for information storage devices like solid state drives. For higher data capacity in storage devices, CMP process is required to show ultimate precision and accuracy. In this work, 2-dimensional finite element models were developed to investigate the effects of the slurry particle impact on microscratch generation and the phenomena generated at pad-particle-wafer contact interface. The results revealed that no plastic deformation and corresponding material removal could be generated by simple impact of slurry particles under real CMP conditions. From the results of finite element simulations, it could be concluded that the pad-particle mixture formed in CMP process would be one of major factors leading to microscratch generation.
