대만산 Xylaria속 열대종의 분류학적 특성 (Taxonomical Characteristics of Tropical Species of Xylaria Collected from Taiwan)

  • Three species of the genus Xylaria are recognized on Taiwan materials: X. allantoidea (Berk.) Fr. and X. obovata (Berk.) Fr.; including one new record X. curta Fr., having $9.0-10.8{\times}3.9-5.4\;{\mu}m$ ascospores, in Taiwan. The collection of Xylaria allantoidea from Taiwan is compared to other collections in morphological characters. The species are described from the host and in culture by a bright microscope and a scanning electron microscope.

Marine Macro-algae of Orissa, East Coast of India

  • A total of twenty one species of marine macro-algae were reported from 460 kms long Orissa coast in the east coast of India. Of these 9 species belongs to Chlorophyta, 2 to Phaeophyta and 10 to Rhodophyta. The low species richness compared with southern and western coasts of India was due to lack of rocky and/or coral substratum. Enteromorpha usneoides and Gelidium divaricatum were reported first from India. Enteromorpha linza, E. clathrata, Colpomenia sinuosa, Dictyota dichotoma, Catenella impudica, Compsopogon aeruginosus and Grateloupia lithophila were the new records for Orissa coast.

  • Genera Neobisnius and Erichsonius from Korea are investigated. Three species of Neobisinus and one species of Erichsonius are identified. Of them, N. angustus is new species and N. Inornatus is recorded first in Korea. Erichsonius is a genus newly recorded from korea.

  • 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) remains to be an important chemotherapeutic drug for treating several cancers when targeted therapy is unavailable. Chemoresistance limits the clinical utility of 5-FU, and new strategies are required to overcome the resistance. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidants are balanced differently in both normal and cancer cells. Modulating ROS can be one method of overcoming 5-FU resistance. This review summarizes selected compounds and endogenous cellular targets modulating ROS generation to overcome 5-FU resistance.

  • Adult chironomids were collected at Dangsan-ri, Muju-eup, Muju-gun, Jeollabuk-do on 5 September 2008, 22 May 2009 and 28 August 2009. A total of 221 specimens belong to the genus Polypedilum Kieffer from 1,113 adult midges collected were morphologically examined, and 16 Polypedilum species were identified. One species is new (Polypedilum dangsanensis Ree et Jeong sp. nov.) and eight species are newly recorded in Korea (P. asakawasense, P. convictum, P. decematogutatus, P. japonicum, P. kamotertium, P. pullum, P. serugense, and P. unifascium). These nine species are described with illustrations. Polypedilum nubifer was the most frequently collected species, consisting of 25.8% of the Polypedilum samples.

  • Three ciliate species of genus Cyrtohymena, C. australis Foissner, 1995, C. citrina (Berger & Foissner, 1987) and C. muscorum (Kahl, 1932) new to Korea, were collected from semi-terrestrial habitats. The description was based on the observation of live and silver stained specimens. Diagnostic characteristics of these species are as follows. C. autralis: size about $275{\times}100{\mu}m$ in live specimens. Cortical granules yellowish. 18-31 right and 31-40 left marginal cirri in number. Dorsal kineties eight rows. C. citrina: size about $180{\times}50{\mu}m$ in live specimens. Cortical granules yellowish. 26-32 right and 23-27 left marginal cirri in number. Dorsal kineties five to six rows. C. muscorum: size about $180{\times}60{\mu}m$ in live specimens. Cortical granules reddish. 31-34 right and 33-36 left marginal cirri in number. Dorsal kineties six rows. Three species of Cyrtohymena have been added to Korean ciliate fauna from this study. Including previous one species of C. quadrinucleata, four species of this genus in total have been recorded so far in this country.

Taxonomic study of three new Antarctic Asterochloris (Trebouxiophyceae) based on morphological and molecular data

  • Asterochloris is one of the most common genera of lichen phycobionts in Trebouxiophyceae. Asterochloris phycobionts associated with the lichenized fungi Cladonia and Stereocaulon in King George Island (Antarctica) and Morro Chico (Chile), were isolated and then used to establish clonal cultures. To understand the phylogenetic relationships and species diversity of Antarctic Asterochloris species, molecular and morphological data were analyzed by using three microscopy techniques (light, confocal laser and transmission electron) and a multi-locus phylogeny with data from the nuclear-encoded internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA and the actin and plastid-encoded ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase large chain (rbcL) coding genes. Morphological data of three Antarctic strains showed significant species-specific features in chloroplast while molecular data segregated the taxa into distinct three clades as well. Each species had unique molecular signatures that could be found in secondary structures of the ITS1 and ITS2. The species diversity of Antarctic Asterochloris was represented by six taxa, namely, A. glomerata, A. italiana, A. sejongensis, and three new species (A. antarctica, A. pseudoirregularis, A. stereocaulonicola).

  • In February,2004, at International Maritime Organization (IMO), LONDON, a new international convention 'International Convention fur the Control and Management of Ship's Ballast Water and Sediment 2004' was adopted. It is called 'Ballast Water Management Convention (BWM)'. Ballast water means charged seawater or fresh water in ship's special tanks (ballast tank) to keep safety navigation and ship's maneuverability. However, from 1980, it was point out the serious problem for marine ecosystem and human life that ballast water includes harmful marine species (and small organisms) and these species are also discharged along with ballast water. These species were released with discharged ballast water in water areas, where species are different from discharged ballast water. The problem is that released species increase when released species are more powerful than native species and consequently, marine ecological system is destroyed in released water area. Authors have inspected the validity of the ballast water exchange using pumping-through method that is one of the methods of ballast water management. In this paper, the numerical simulation of the motion and density of the fluid at the time of exchange of the fluid in a 2-dimensional tank using the pumping-through method was carried out by using two different type numerical methods. One method is MPS method that is one of the particle methods. Other one is Finite Different Method (FDM). Authors were compared with result of two numerical method calculations and experiment result and reported some knowledge from these results.

하늘지기속(사초과)의 신종: 물하늘지기(Fimbristylis drizae J. Kim & M. Kim) (A new species of Fimbristylis (Cyperaceae): F. drizae J. Kim & M. Kim)

  • 사초과의 하늘지기속 신종인 물하늘지기(Fimbristylis drizae J. Kim & M. Kim)를 전라북도 정읍시 수청저수지에서 발견하여 기재하였다. 물하늘지기는 줄기는 5각형이고 1-2개의 기부 경생엽이 엽신이 없는 엽초만 있으며 화서는 소수화서를 가진 점에서 검정하늘지기(F. diphylloides Makino)와 유사하다. 그러나 물하늘지기는 주두가 2개이고, 소수가 타원형이며, 수술이 1개(드물게 2개)이고, 인편이 황갈색이며 저수지 가장자리에서 자라는 특징을 가지고 있다. 반면에 검정하늘지기는 주두가 2개 또는 3개이고, 소수가 난형이며, 수술이 2개이고, 인편이 흑갈색이며 임도변의 습한 곳에서 자라는 점에서 구별된다.

  • 중국 연변지역에서 할미꽃속의 신잡종인 연변할미꽃(Pulsatilla ${\times}$ yanbianensis H.Z. Lv)을 새로이 발견하여 기재하였다. 연변할미꽃은 개화시 잎이 완전히 벌어져 분홍할미꽃과 유사하나, 꽃받침이 적자색이고 과실이 불임인 점에서 뚜렷이 구별된다. 연변할미꽃은 꽃받침과 화주가 흑적색인 가는할미꽃과 유사하나, 잎의 엽연에 짧은 털이 있고 개화시 잎이 완전히 벌어진 점에서 뚜렷하게 차이가 난다.
