Methods : Both patients took Yeonryeonggobondan and Pyungwee-san daily. Everytime they came to the hospital, they received acupuncture treatment, Hwidam's Su-Gi therapy and External Gigong Therapy. Acupuncture was applied by gall bladder seunggyeok(膽勝格, GB-), spleen jeonggyeok(脾正格, SP+), large intestine seunggyeok(大腸勝格, LI-) of Saam's Acupuncture Method. Hwidam's Su-Gi therapy was applied on neck. External Gigong Therapy was applied on skin lesion area. the patients' symptoms were evaluated with photographs and VAS. Results : The results were as follows: 1. In the case of a 67-year-old male patient, it took 14 days to recover the skin lesions and to reduce the pain after treatment started. And he visited 13 times during that period. 2. In the case of a 38-year-old female patient, it took 23 days to recover the skin lesions to reduce and the pain after treatment started. And she visited 10 times during that period. 3. Intensive treatment early in treating herpes zoster helped to shorten the treatment period. 4. Taking Yeonryeonggobondan and Pyungwee-san and receiving acupuncture treatment(SP+) can help to improve immunity and recover skin lesions in herpes zoster diagnosed with spleen deficiency with dampness encumbrance(脾虛濕困) and blood stasis due to qi stagnation (氣滯血瘀). 5. The combination of acupuncture treatment(GB-) and External Gigong Therapy was effective in controlling pain. 6. External Gigong Therapy is considered to be effective for the recovery of the skin as well as the pain of the herpes zoster. Conclusions : Korean medicine treatment alone has a great effect on the above two patients with herpes zoster. I hope the active research about Korean medicine treatment will be done not only for herpes zoster but also for various intractable pain diseases.

  • Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) is characterized by the presense of hypereosinophilia with evidence of target organ damage. We report a patient diagnosed with eosinophilic cystitis and HES. A 7 year old boy had hematuria, dysuria, and increased urinary frequency for 1 day. Laboratory examinations revealed hypereosinophilia (eosinophils, $2,058/{\mu}L$), hematuria, and proteinuria. Abdominal sonography revealed diffuse and severe wall thickening of the bladder. The patient was treated initially with antibiotics. However, his symptoms did not improve after 7 days. A computed tomography scan demonstrated severe wall thickening of the bladder and the hypereosinophilia persisted (eosinophils, $2,985/{\mu}L$). The patient complained of chest discomfort, dyspnea, epigastric pain, and vomiting on hospital day 10. Parasitic, allergic, malignancy, rheumatologic, and immune workups revealed no abnormal findings. Chest X-rays, electrocardiography, and a pulmonary function test were normal; however, the hypereosinophilia was aggravated (eosinophils, $3,934/{\mu}L$). Oral deflazacort was administered. A cystoscopic biopsy showed chronic inflammation with eosinophilic infiltration. The patient's respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary symptoms improved after 6 days of steroids, and he was discharged. The eosinophil count decreased dramatically ($182/{\mu}L$). The hypereosinophilia waxed and waned for 7 months, and the oral steroids were tapered and stopped. This case describes a patient diagnosed with eosinophilic cystitis and HES.

  • Intracranial pial arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a rare cerebrovascular lesion that has only recently been recognized as a distinct pathological entity. A 41-year-old woman (Patient 1) presented with the sudden development of an altered mental state. Brain CT showed an acute subdural hematoma. A red sylvian vein was found intraoperatively. A pial AVF was revealed on postoperative angiography, and surgical disconnection of the AVF was performed. A 10-year-old boy (Patient 2) presented with a 10-day history of paraparesis and urinary incontinence. Brain, spinal MRI and angiography revealed an intracranial pial AVF and a spinal perimedullary AVF. Endovascular embolization was performed for both lesions. The AVFs were completely obliterated in both patients. On follow-up, patient 1 reported having no difficulty in performing activities of daily living. Patient 2 is currently able to walk without assistance and voids into a diaper. Intracranial pial AVF is a rare disease entity that can be treated with surgical disconnection or endovascular embolization. It is important for the appropriate treatment strategy to be selected on the basis of patient-specific and lesion-specific factors in order to achieve good outcomes.

  • Objective: This study aimed to explore the readability and comprehensibility of the drug information on a patient leaflet for the senior by employing performance-based user-testing. Methods: We included 36 elderly (65 years old or older) as the senior group (intervention group) and 36 adults (40~59 years old) as the adult group (control). We developed a questionnaire to test if participants could access to drug information. After completing a questionnaire, the participant was interviewed about their understanding over the patient leaflet. We performed t-test, ${\chi}^2$-test or Fisher's exact test to examine differences between two groups in primary outcomes. Results: The senior were less likely able to find information (78%) than the adult (91%); they were much less likely able to understand information (42%) than the adult (69%). While we found differences between the ability of finding and understanding drug information in both groups, the senior group had greater difficulties in understanding all kinds of drug information. They had significant difficulties to remember information after reading the patient leaflet and frequently failed to find proper information even though they were allowed to access freely to the leaflet during interviewing. Conclusion: To secure safe and effective use of drugs for the senior, it is necessary to develop drug leaflets for the senior.

This pain was aggravated in supine position. The patient did not have any other symtoms or signs to suggest the possibility of a lung cancer. Patient's baseline laboratory findings were essentially normal. Routine chest X-ray revealed hazy densities in the left apex. Further evaluation with chest CT confirmed the presence of a lung cancer corresponding to the densities seen on the chest X-ray.

  • Background : This case is to report a gallbladder cancer patient treated with Korean Medicine who could not receive conventional cancer therapies such as operation and chemotherapy due to her underlying diseases, old age and poor performance. Method and Results : An eighty-year-old female patient was diagnosed with stage IV gallbladder cancer on Feb. 2014 and she already had hypertension, diabetes and Parkinsonism. Comprehensive Korean Medicine (KM) treatments instead of operation and chemotherapy were administrated due to her poor condition and old age. KM treatments were done focused on improving symptoms and quality of life combined with best supportive care. During KM treatments her abdominal pain was generally managed and she survived for 22 months. Conclusion : Further studies should be performed in the future to clarify the survival benefit and symptom management of comprehensive KM treatments.
