This paper describes the effectiveness of continuous water removal in oil immersed transformers. Insulation oil in which insulation papers were immersed were prepared for tests and water concentrations in oil with heating time were measured at five oil temperatures. Also, the tests that water dissolved in $100^{\circ}C$ oil was removed at once and continuously at $50^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$ were performed for consideration of effective method for water removal. Test results indicated that the oils for water measurement have to be extracted at similar temperatures and water in oil has to be continuously removed at higher temperatures for more effective water management of transformers.
Faults of cellulosic insulations greatly affect the life span of oil immersed transformers because their performance recovery is impossible. Therefore, the reliable diagnosis technologies are needed for detection of the faults. Dissolved gas analysis technologies using CO and $CO_2$ gases have been widely used for fault diagnosis of cellulosic insulations. In this research, we described Degradation diagnosis of insulation paper CO and $CO_2$ gases in oil immersed Transformers using. We considered the distribution characteristics of CO, $CO_2$ gases' concentrations and ratios of $CO_2$/CO not only in serviced transformers but in experiments with typical fault causes such as heat, partial discharge and moisture. As result, the reliability of diagnosis results for the cellulosic insulations can be improved when the concentrations of CO, $CO_2$ and the ratio of CO/$CO_2$ satisfy each diagnosis criterion at a tim
This paper presents the general recommendations for the overload criterions of mineral-oil-immersed distribution transformers rated 100kVA and less. For this purpose, we analyze the characteristics of top-oil temperature rising for mineral-oil-immersed power distribution transformer rated 100kVA and less, manufactured in Korea, In order to analyze the characteristics of top-oil temperature rising due to the distribution transformer loading, we performed experiments at KERI (Korea Electrical Research Institute) from December 2000 to May 2001. The restraint of ambient temperatures for the experiment results is solved using the results of foreign standards. Finally, we present the overload criterions of distribution transformer for summer and winter season, respectively.
Starting from the distribution transformer, the insulation oil for the oil immersed power transformer is being used to convert the vegetable oil from the existing mineral oil. Vegetable oil is better in temperature characteristics and insulation performance, is not toxic, and has better biodegradable characteristic than that of mineral oil. In order to investigate the corona inception voltage and dieclectic charateristics of the two insulating oils, three oil immersed transformers using mineral oil and vegetable oil were made and thermal cyclic aged. In this paper, the changes in the corona discharge inception voltage, chemical and electrical properties of the two sampled insulating oils from the transformers had been studied.
This paper dealt with the measurement and analysis of electromagnetic waves radiated from a partial discharge (PD) source in insulation oil to apply condition monitoring of oil-immersed transformers. Two types of narrow-band monopole antennas with the resonant frequency of a 500 MHz and a 1 GHz were designed and fabricated. Also, a needle-plane electrode system was manufactured to simulate PDs and the curvature radius of the needle is 10 ${\mu}m$ and the diameter of the plane is 60 mm. Electromagnetic wave was measured by the PD measurement system with the monopole antennas. Detection sensitivity of the fabricated antenna was compared for the same PD magnitude; 620 $mV_{peak}$ for the 500 MHz antenna and 960 $mV_{peak}$ for the 1 GHz antenna to the PD magnitude of 74 pC. Consequently, the 1 GHz monopole antenna is more effective to detect PDs in oil-immersed transformers.
Subway is electrified railway system nowadays, in which liquid dielectric transformers have been widely used, though mold type transformers are replacing it. The transformers supplies large electric power and have innate hazards causing accidents under operation. A number of researcher have carried out on failures of it and have oriented to identify transformer's failure causes and how to maintain it healthy state. The transformer failures can cause serious accidents which can provoke economic loss and leads persons to kill. In this paper, we carried out a safety activity to reveal hazards and to estimate risk of subway liquid dielectric transformers using FMEA, HAZOP and What-if methods. In case of installing safety devices in oil immersed transformer, we tried to evaluate an effect on a subsystem's failure rate. We proposed how to design subsystem failure rate and safety device failure rates.
Support vector machine (SVM) is introduced as an effective fault diagnosis technique based on dissolved gases analysis (DGA) for oil-immersed transformers with maximum generalization ability; however, the applicability of the SVM is highly affected due to the difficulty of selecting the SVM parameters appropriately. Therefore, a novel approach combing SVM with improved imperialist competitive algorithm (IICA) for fault diagnosis of oil-immersed transformers was proposed in the paper. The improved ICA, which is proved to be an effective optimization approach, is employed to optimize the parameters of SVM. Cross validation and normalizations were applied in the training processes of SVM and the trained SVM model with the optimized parameters was established for fault diagnosis of oil-immersed transformers. Three classification benchmark sets were studied based on particle swarm optimization SVM (PSOSVM) and IICASVM with four multiple classification schemes to select the best scheme for transformer fault diagnosis. The results show that the proposed model can obtain higher diagnosis accuracy than other methods. The comparisons confirm that the proposed model is an effective approach for classification problems.
This paper dealt with the radiated electromagnetic wave detection of partial discharge (PD) in oil for insulation diagnostics of oil-immersed transformers. Three types of electrode system were fabricated to simulate the insulation defects that could occur in oil-immersed transformers. Frequency components of radiated electromagnetic wave in oil was measured by broadband bi-conical antennas of 300 MHz~2 GHz and a spectrum analyzer of 9 kHz~3 GHz. Frequency component of electromagnetic waves from PD in oil were highly distributed at 500 MHz. From the result, a narrow-band monopole antenna with the center frequency of 500 MHz was fabricated. We could detect PD signal in insulation oil without an influence of external noise by a measurement system which consists of the prototype monopole antenna, a LNA (Low Noise Amplifier), an oscilloscope and a spectrum analyzer.
The health state of the oil transformer is evaluated by the age of use and the state of internal defects. Mineral Oil, used as an insulator for oil transformers, creates specific gases and compounds through chemical reactions caused by heat, moisture, and partial discharge inside the transformer. It is possible to determine the aging and defect of the transformer through these gases and compounds. So, it is an important indicator to evaluate the health of a transformer. In this study, factors for assessing the health of transformers were hierarchically categorized, and key factors for each hierarchy were selected for design weighting. These weights were determined through surveys conducted with experts in the fields of transformer design, operation, and quality. For the health of a transformer, defect-related factors are approximately three times more important than factors related to aging. Additionally, defect-related factors showed a higher weighting for gases generated at high temperatures. Furthermore, Furan was determined to have a high weight, directly associated with insulating paper aging. Based on these findings, a health index was proposed, and a comparative analysis was conducted by categorizing 40 operational transformers into normal and comparison groups to evaluate and validate it.
Liquid-immersed pole transformers have utilized an insulation system consisting of natural cellulose-based materials and mineral oil for many years. If the transformers are installed with the abruptly changing load over limitation, its insulation materials are apt to unexpected aging with high temperature. Therefore we have been conscious of developing a transformer that is more thermally stable then conventional types. To measure temperature distribution in the winding of conventional and newly designed transformers, temperature sensors were installed fordirect reading of oil and conductor temperatures at transformers. And we conducted accelerating aging test for these transformers. The measuring data had made use of the design to hybrid insulation system. Also we could find the possibility of this insulation system to apply in pole mounted transformers.
