  • We study convergent influence on Job Satisfaction(JS) and its association with Self Efficacy(SE), Job Characteristics(JC) and Occupational Stress(OS) among Hospital Administrative Staff(HAS). The survey was administered to 221 staff from 11 general hospitals located in Jeonbuk area from Nov. 1st, 2016 to Jan. 31st, 2017. The structured self-administered questionaries were used. JS was positively correlated with SE and three sub-domains of JC, and it was negatively correlated with seven sub-domains of OS. With the analysis of covariance structure, OS was more influential on JS than SE and JC. The study found the higher SE and JC, and the lower OC tend to increase JS. The results indicate that the efforts, to increase SE and JC, and to decrease OS, are required to increase the JS of HAS. The results are expected to be useful for organization personnel management to increase the JS of HAS. In the following study, the analysis about convergent additional factors of influence on JS will be needed.

  • This study attempts, using qualitative research methods, to identify a series of complex processes and mechanisms that turn the differences in the parents' education levels and occupational statuses into the gaps between their children's academic achievements. The highly educated parents with high occupational status are obsessed with top universities while the less educated parents with low occupational status tend to be less interested in educational capital. The highly educated middle-class parents themselves have strong educational aspirations. They also try to inspire educational aspirations and academic enthusiasm in their children by the early and deep involvement in a long-term educational strategy. They repeatedly teach their children to have aspirations toward higher professional status as well as a competitive attitude in academic performance. In contrast, the less educated working class parents do not emphasize the importance of high education and 'a good educational background' to their children. The differences in the educational aspirations and parenting practices between the two social classes primarily derive from their varying life experiences in the social structure. The middle class interviewees said that their obsession with 'a good education background' was closely related to their sense of fear that their children could fall from the middle class. In contrast to the middle class interviewees, the working class parents had no memories of painful experiences related to their lack of higher education. They claimed that they rarely ever felt inferior and that they rarely regretted their lack of high education. In addition, they did not believe that their lives were more difficult due to their 'low education'.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to elucidate the physicochemical properties of silica powder and airborne particles as by-products generated from fabrication processes to reduce unknown risk factors in the semiconductor manufacturing work environment. Materials and Methods: Sampling was conducted at 200 mm and 300 mm semiconductor wafer fabrication facilities. Thirty-two powder and airborne by-product samples, diffusion(10), chemical vapor deposition(10), chemical mechanical polishing(5), clean(5), etch process(2), were collected from inner chamber parts from process and 1st scrubber equipment during maintenance and process operation. The chemical composition, size, shape, and crystal structure of silica by-product particles were determined by using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy techniques equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and x-ray diffractometry. Results: All powder and airborne particle samples were composed of oxygen(O) and silicon(Si), which means silica particle. The by-product particles were nearly spherical $SiO_2$ and the particle size ranged 25 nm to $50{\mu}m$, and most of the particles were usually agglomerated within a particle size range from approximately 25 nm to 500 nm. In addition, the crystal structure of the silica powder particles was found to be an amorphous silica. Conclusions: The silica by-product particles generated from the semiconductor manufacturing processes are amorphous $SiO_2$, which is considered a less toxic form. These results should provide useful information for alternative strategies to improve the work environment and workers' health.

  • This article examines the employment status of older male workers in the era of industrialization, focusing on the questions of how the extent of pressure toward retirement varied across different occupations, and how it changed over time. A comparison of hazard of retirement across occupations shows that men who had better occupations in terms of economic status and work conditions were less likely to retire than were those with poorer jobs. This result tends to reject the recent view that retirement was more voluntary than forced as early as a century ago. The difficulty faced by older workers in the labor market, as measured by the relative incidence of long-term unemployment, was relatively severe among craftsmen, operatives, and salesmen. In contrast, aged farmers, professionals, managers, and proprietors appear to have fared well in the labor market. The pattern of shifts in the occupational structure that occurred between 1880 and 1940 suggests that industrialization had brought a growth of the sectors in which the pressure toward departure from employment at older ages was relatively strong.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to review size, shape, and crystal structure-dependent toxicity of major metal oxide particles such as silicon dioxide, tungsten trioxide, aluminum oxide, and titanium dioxide as byproducts generated in semiconductor fabrication facility. Methods: To review the toxicity of major metal oxide particles, we used various reported research and review papers. The papers were searched by using websites such as Google Scholar and PubMed. Keyword search terms included '$SiO_2$(or $WO_3$ or $Al_2O_3$ or $TiO_2$) toxicity', 'health effects $SiO_2$(or $WO_3$ or $Al_2O_3$ or $TiO_2$). Additional papers were identified in references cited in the searched papers. Results: In various cell lines and organs of human and animals, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, hepatoxicity, fetotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and histopathological changes were induced by silicon dioxide, tungsten trioxide, aluminium oxide, and titanium dioxide particles. Differences in toxicity were dependent on the cell lines, organs, doses, as well as the chemical composition, size, surface area, shape, and crystal structure of the particles. However, the doses used in the reported papers were higher than the possible exposure level in general work environment. Oxidative stress induced by the metal oxide particles plays a significant role in the expression of toxicity. Conclusions: The results cannot guarantee human toxicity of the metal oxide particles, because there is still a lack of available information about health effects on humans. In addition, toxicological studies under the exposure conditions in the actual work environment are needed.

  • This study tried to examine the conflict relationships and solutions among the members of a hospital structure, a structure composed of various experts and professionals. As the situations causing conflicts are very different depending on the sizes or structural types of hospitals, the samples were collected from total 235 people of 17 medical specialists, 46 residents, 74 nurses and 74 medical technicians, 40 administrators in a university hospital for clearing conflict relationships. The result showed that a hospital had separately different the conflict causes according to all types of occupations. That is, there were various conflict relationships such as the conflict with the medical specialists, with residents, with nurses, and with administrators, and resulted in respectively different causes from those conflict relationships. In addition to, looking into the top of conflict causes, the respondents in all occupations attributed the conflict with medical specialists to "authoritative attitude" of medical specialists, and attributed the rest types of conflict relationships to "lack knowledge of the work". And then, in terms of the top of conflict solutions according to the occupational types in the hospital structure, medical specialists and administrators chose competition & cooperation, and the way for residents, nurses and medical technicians was situation-avoidance. The competition & cooperation type, negotiation type and situation-avoidance type, among solution types, were little difference regardless of occupations, but in case of work-avoidance type, there were significant differences according to residents, nurses, medical technicians, administrators, and medical specialists in the order.

  • Background: This study aims to derive the characteristics of each work type for industrial radiography based on empirical evidence through expert advice and a survey of radiation workers of various types of industrial radiography. Materials and Methods: According to a Korean report, work types of industrial radiography are classified into indoor tests, underground pipe tests, tests in a shielded room (radiographic testing [RT] room test), outdoor field tests, and outdoor large structure tests. For each work type, exposure geometry and radiation sources were mainly identified through the expert advice and workers' survey as reliable empirical evidence. Results and Discussion: The expert advice and survey results were consistent as the proportion of the work types were high in the order of RT room test, outdoor large structure test, underground pipe test, outdoor field test, and indoor test. The outdoor large structure test is the highest exposure risk work type in the industrial radiography. In most types of industrial radiography, radiation workers generally used 192Ir as the main source. In the results of the survey, the portion of sources was high in the order of 192Ir, X-ray generator, 60Co, and 75Se. As the exposure geometry, the antero-posterior geometry is dominant, and the rotational and isotropic geometry should be also considered with the work type. Conclusion: In this study, through expert advice and a survey, the external exposure characteristics for each work type of industrial radiography workers were derived. This information will be used in the reconstruction of organ dose for health effects assessment of Korean radiation workers.

  • This study aims to understand how human capital is related to the inter-regional wage gap between the capital region and the non-capital region in Korea. We focus more specifically on whether the inter-regional wage gap is due to high levels of human capital in the capital region or due to high returns to human capital in the capital region. The decomposition method based on the unconditional quantile regression was used to examine how the relationship between human capital and the inter-regional wage gap varies along the wage distribution. When first estimating earnings functions from the two regions to apply this decomposition method, we included not only conventional indicators of human capital, such as education and on-the-job training, but also occupational skills including cognitive-interactive skills, technical skills, and physical skills. As a result, other things being equal, a large part of the inter-regional wage gap was explained by the human capital variables. Although the composition effect of the human capital variables existed in all the wage quantiles, the more important factor was the wage structure effect of the human capital variables. In addition, among the various human capital variables, the wage structure effect of years of education was a key factor in explaining the inter-regional wage gap. This study is meaningful in that it shows that the relationship between human capital and the inter-regional wage gap may vary depending on the wage quantiles.
