Anterior Screw Fixation using Herbert Screw for Type II Odontoid Process Fractures

  • Objective: Anterior screw fixation provides the best anatomical and functional results for type II odontoid process fracture (type II-A, II-N, and II-P) with intact transverse ligament. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the usefulness of the 4.5mm diameter, cannulated Herbert screw in anterior screw fixation. Methods: From Jan. 2003 to Feb. 2004, consecutive 10cases of type II odontoid process fractures were treated with anterior screw fixation using a Herbert screw. The Herbert screw has double threads, with different pitches on the distal and proximal ends. It has no head, so it can be inserted through articular cartilage and buried below bone surface. It was originally developed for treating scaphoid fractures. Results: There were 8male and 2female patients whose ages ranged from 15 to 67years (mean 42.1years). The fracture type was type II-A in 4patients, II-N in 3 patients, and II-P in 3 patients. The fracture line was oblique downward and backward in 6cases, oblique downward and forward in 1 case, and horizontal in 3cases. The range of follow-up was 5 to 18months (mean 12months). Bone fusions were achieved in all cases without any instrumental failures or postoperative complications. Conclusion: The Herbert screw is very useful in anterior fixation for type II odontoid process fracture. This series showed successful results also in type II-A odontoid fracture when treated with the Herbert screw, but further more studies are required.

A Study on Court's Dancing Costume - A Comparison between the Court's Dancing Costume and the People's Clothes - (궁중 무용의상에 관한 연구 - 유럽 일반 복식과의 비교를 중심으로 -)

  • This study as one of a series of systematic studies about dancing costumes will compare the costumes of the 16th. 17th century with their normal style of dress. In brief. this study wants people to know about 16th, 17th century court dancing costumes and to understand the culture in the 16th.17th century. From the comparison between the court's dancing costume and the people's clothes, we could get the conclusion as follows. First, pourpoint. chemis, gown, chausses, etc. that people wore were used for the court's dancing costume. While people Pursued the beauty with the ample silhouette. there were used wrinkles. slits. and tailored oblique line-clothes that gave vitality. Second, silk. linen. brocade. etc. that were used for people's chemises were used for the dancing costume. The good quality and beautiful colors of the dancing costume. however. excelled than of the brilliant court's clothes and the people's clothes. Third. the hair style of dancers were very colorful. For example, there were many kinds of hats and furs, corals, etc. that were attached to them on the most of the long curly hair. In summary, for the court's dancing costume, the same type of clothes was used like the people's clothes. There, however, were differences. The slits, tailored oblique line-clothes and shortened skirt gave the activity. There were many decorations symbolizing the nobles' wealth and Power. Especially the use of the decoration of hair and other stake properties was an effective means for expression. The use of personified masks also contributed to the development of the court dance.

A Study on the Aesthetic Thought and Expression Tendency of Contemporary Architecture from the Concept of the Uncanny (언캐니 개념으로 바라 본 현대건축의 미적사유와 표현경향 연구)

  • This study aims to analyze the aesthetic thought and expression tendency appeared in contemporary architecture by looking at today's architectural art based on the concept of the uncanny that Sigmund Freud contended as an aesthetic principle, of the aesthetic concepts tossed around to define the contemporary times in the aesthetics field and discuss the architectural analysis possibility of the concept of the uncanny. The generation structure of the uncanny that generates experiences of fear and surprise is classified into dual structure, trauma, threatening structure, and repetition compulsion. This is the principle that evokes a sense of experiencing subject, incorporates sensibility, and vitalizes internal process. This is also the methodology to organize and structure the concept of the uncanny. When seen from the four factors drawn from the concept of the uncanny and aesthetic expressions, the uncanny expression characteristics of contemporary architecture includes isolation, subversion, trace, absence, oblique line, flotation, concealment, and disturbance. Isolation and subversion refers to producing the space of the pressure of tension and relaxation caused by repression and relief from repression and eliciting the maximum expansion of the sense of space through spatial change. Trace and absence indicates being able to elicit more intense emotions from the experiencing subject by applying the images of alienation and absence in the way to reproduce historical trauma. This happens by implementing the potential value of physical activity. Oblique line and flotation means visual impulse. This happens in the way to visualize uneasy points. This causes uncanny by threatening the survival. Finally, concealment and disturbance refers to creating unpredictable space. The concept of masquerade and maze space composition are applied in the way to activate spatial perception, including space exploration and unintended subject's forced selection. As stated above, the uncanny expression characteristics shown in contemporary architecture can be presented as indicators that are available to analyze the undecided and diversified contemporary architecture aesthetically. In this respect, this study has great significance.

A Study on the Numerical Models of Wave induced Currents (파랑에 의한 연안류의 수치모델에 관한 연구)

  • A finite difference model for predicting time-dependent, wave-induced nearshore current is studied. The model includes wave refraction, wave-current interaction, bottom friction and wind effect. This model iteratively solved the linear the linear set of conservation of both mass and momentum, which were time averaged (over one wave period) and depth integrated, for mean velocities and free surface displacement. Numerical simulations of nearshore current under oblique wave attack, and for wave and wind induced current on a longshore periodic beach are carried out. Longshore velocities tend to zero in some distances outside the breaker line. And the peak velocity is shifted shoreward at the breaker line. The results represent the general characteristics of the nearshore current induced by wave.

Study of Computed Tomography Reconstruction Angle of Bony Stenosis of the Cervical Foramen (경추 신경공 골성 협착에서 CT 재구성 각도 연구)

  • This study is an image reconstruction method after cervical CT scan. According to the oblique coronal reconstruction angle, i would like to suggest the reconstruction angle that can best express neural foraminal bony stricture. The angle created by drawing a line passing through the center of the spinal cord in the midsagittal plane of the cervical spine and the uncovertebral joint was measured. A line passing through the center of the spinal cord was drawn from the neural foramen, and the angle formed with the midsagittal plane was measured and compared. At the C4-5 level, the average was 9.2°, at the C5-6 level, the average was 9.9°, and at the C6-7 level, the average was 8.4°, the neural foraminal angle was measured to be larger than the uncovertebral joint angle. There was a statistically significant difference in mean (p<0.01). Also, it was found that the angle increased toward the lower cervical vertebrae. The angle between the neural foramen of the lower cervical vertebrae (C5-6, C6-7) and the center of the spinal cord is between 55 and 60°. Here, if the oblique coronal image is reconstructed to be 90°, the degree of neural foramen stenosis can be observed well. Because it is an image reconstruction using a conventional CT scan image, it does not receive additional radiation exposure. It is of great significance in diagnosing cervical neural foramen bony stenosis.

  • Four specimens (218.3~234.5 mm SL) of the family Stichaeidae were collected from the coastal water of Kangwon-do, in the middle East Sea of Korea. They are identified as Stichaeus nozawai Jordan and Snyder based on the following characters: posterior end of mouth not reaching posterior margin of eye, lateral line reaching posterior part of the caudal base; 10~13 dorsal spines behind end of lateral line, dorsal fin with oblique dark lines, I, 36~37 anal fin rays. We proposed a new Korean name, 'Keun-nun-jang-gaeng-i', for the species.

  • This study is based on the observation of women's Jangui in 17th centuries. As we observed, Jangui in seventeenth century was shown the same style. They were not headdress but coat. The characteristics of shape are Mokpankit, double-seop, straight sleeve, triangle moo, sam-su(which is attached to the end of sleeves) and a little coat string etc. There is no specific mode difference with the change of times. However, the straight sleeve is shown straight line in the early Chosun dynasty. Jangui in seventeen century are all oblique line sleeve except Jangui of Jin-ju Ha's family. Jangui put on coat do not seem clear-cut difference with the change of times. From Jangui of Yang-chun Hu's family in 14th centuries till An-dong Kim's family, the special features of Jangui are the same style. In addition, The double-seop in 17th centuries was not completely symmetry. However, after 19th centuries, Jangui for headdress was shown perfectly symmetry.

Remote Sensing of Wave Trajectory in Surf Zone using Oblique Digital Videos (해안 디지털 비디오를 이용한 쇄파지역에서의 파랑궤적 측정)

  • A remote sensing technique to identify trajectories of breaking waves in the surf zone using oblique digital nearshore videos is proposed. The noise arising from white foam induced by wave breaking has hindered accurate remote sensing of wave properties in the surf zone. For this reason, this paper focuses on image processing to remove the noise and wave trajectory identification essential for wave property estimation. The nearshore video imagery sampled at 3 Hz are used, covering length scale(100 m). Original image sequences are processed through image frame differencing and directional low-pass image filtering to remove the noise characterized by high frequencies in the video imagery. The extraction of individual wave crest features is conducted using a Radon transform-based line detection algorithm in the processed cross-shore image timestacks having a two-dimensional space-time domain. The number of valid wave crest trajectories identified corresponds to about 2/3 of waves recorded by the in-situ sensors.

p-Version Finite Element Model for Computation of the Stress Intensity Factors of Cracked Panels under Mixed Mode (혼합모우드를 받는 균열판의 응력확대계수 산정을 위한 p-Version 유한요소 모델)

  • In this paper, two different techniques for mixed-mode type engineering fracture mechanics are investigated to estimate the stress intensity factors by using p-version finite element model. These two techniques are displacement extrapolation with COD and CSD method and J-integral with decomposition method. By decomposing the displacement field obtained from p-version of finite element analysis into symmetric and antisymmetric displacement fields with respect to the crack line, Mode-I and Mode-II stress intensity factors can be determined using aforementioned techniques. The example problems for validating the proposed techniques are centrally and centrally oblique cracked panels under tension. The numerical results associated with the variation of oblique angle and the ratio of crack length and panel width (a /W ratio) are compared with those by theoretical values and empirical solutions in literatures. Very good agreements with the existing solutions are shown.

  • This study was peformed to investigate the distribution and magnitude of stress at supporting tissue of abutment teeth and residual ridge tissue with remaining unilateral posterior teeth. Four types of removable partial dentures that included clasp retained removable partial denture, attachment retained removable partial denture, telescopic removable partial denture, and swing-lock partial denture were designed, and strain gauge was used for stress analysis. Each prosthesis was subjected to simulated vertical and oblique load. The following conclusions were drawn from this study. 1. The clasp retained removable partial denture generally distributed simulated vertical force more evenly to the supporting structure. 2. The stress at buccal side of 1st premolar was the lowest in swing-lock partial denture and that was highest in attchment retained removable partial denture. The stress at lingual side of 1st premolar was the lowest in telescopic partial denture. 3. In clasp retained removable partial denture, stress was lower at load site and ridge crest at mid-line, but it was higher at 1st premolar area on vertical load. 4. In attachment removable partial denture, stresses at buccal side of 1st premolar. lingual side of 1st premolar on vertical load, and ridge crest at midline on oblique load were higher. 5. In telescopic removable partial denture, stress at lingual side of 1st premolar was the least in all removable partial dentures, but the stress at load site was higher. 6. In swing-lock removable partial denture, stress at buccal side of 1st premolar was the lowest, and stresses at load site and distal end of residual ridge crest were higher.
