  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the safety of 'Gamitaeeumjowee-tang' by analyzing adverse events in weight loss program in combination with 'Gamitaeeumjowee-tang' and low-calorie diet. Methods: A retrospective review of adverse events in weight loss program in combination with 'Gamitaeeumjowee-tang' and low-calorie diet from the electronic medical chart (n=124) between June 2015 and December 2016 was conducted. Three Korean Medicine Doctors (KMDs) reviewed adverse events for two times, during week 2 to 4 and at week 10, after starting weight loss program. Adverse events were evaluated in terms of causality, severity and system-organ classes. Also, agreement among the three KMDs was made through further discussion in case of disagreement after independent review. Results: The overall rate of adverse events was 37.1% during week 2 to 4 and 16.9% at week 10. For causality of adverse events using the World Health Organization-Uppsala Monitoring Centre causality categories, 52.2% were evaluated 'possible' at week 2-4 and 57.1% were evaluated 'unlikely' at week 10. All symptoms were evaluated as 'mild' by LDS scale. Nausea (15, 12.1%) was the most frequent adverse event at week 2-4 and dizziness (6, 4.8%) was the most common at week 10. Conclusions: Adverse events decreased over time. There were no serious adverse events and none of the subjects were dropped due to adverse events. Continuous study is needed to prove the safety of 'Gamitaeeumjowee-tang' for treating obesity.

  • This study analyses "Survey of Health and Behavior of Children and Adolescents" which is conducted by National Youth Policy Institute that investigated influential factors in difference between actual obesity and perceptional obesity. GLM (Generalized Linear Mode) was carried out to estimate the effects on the eating habits and physical activities and multinomial logit analysis was carried out to examine the influential factors in difference between actual, obesity and perceptional obesity. The results of this study are shown as follows. First 72.0% of total respondents showed the congruence between actual obesity and perceptional obesity and 24.6% of total respondents perceived them fatter than actual. The remaining 3.5% perceived them thinner than actual. Second, the main effects of actual obesity and perceptional obesity on eating habits were statistically significant, but interaction effect between them was not statistically significant. The main effects of actual obesity and perceptional obesity on physical activities and interaction effect between them were all statistically significant. Third, the influential factors in difference between actual obesity and perceptional obesity were gender, age, school record, education of parents, subjective economic status, and living together with family.

  • Objectives : This study investigated the improvement effects of Pakistani (DF-a) and Chinese Ephedra herba-containing Gangjihwan (DF-b) on obesity in a high fat diet-fed obese mouse model. Methods : Eight-week-old C57BL/6N mice were divided into four groups: a normal lean group given a standard diet, an obese control group given a high fat diet, and DF-a and DF-b groups given a high fat diet with DF-a (80 mg/kg), and DF-b (80 mg/kg), respectively. After 8 weeks of treatment, body weight gain, feeding efficiency ratio, blood lipid markers, fat weight and histology were examined. Results : 1. Body weight gain and fat mass were significantly decreased in DF-a and DF-b groups compared with control. The extent of decreases was eminent in DF-a group. 2. Feeding efficiency ratio and circulating leptin concentration were significantly decreased in DF-a and DF-b groups compared with control, whereas circulating adiponectin concentration was increased in DF-a and DF-b groups compared with control. 3. Consistent with their effects on body weight gain and fat mass, circulating concentrations of triglyceride, glucose and insulin were decreased in DF-a and DF-b groups compared with control. 4. The size of adipocytes were decreased by DF-a and DF-b compared with control, whereas the adipocyte number per unit area was increased by them, suggesting that DF-a and DF-b decreased the number of large adipocytes. 5. Consistent with their effects on body weight gain, liver fibrosis was reduced in DF-a and DF-b groups compared with control. Conclusions : In conclusion, these results suggest that DF-a and DF-b not only decrease feeding efficiency ratio, plasma leptin concentration, and blood anti-obesity biomarkers, but also reduce fat mass, contributing to the improvement of obesity. DF-a and DF-b also inhibit liver fibrosis. In addition, these effects were similar between Pakistani Ephedra herba and Chinese Ephedra herba-containing Gangjihwan.

  • The treatment of obesity is increasingly becoming important to effective medical treatment, especially in case involving a degradation of the lower joints. A recent case placed two osteoarthritic obese patients who underwent arthroscopic surgery in a regiment of herbal diet. Alter 3-5 months of receiving this oriental treatment, the patients not only lost weight, but also showed significant reduction of joint inflammation and pain. It is true that obese patients with lower limb or osteoarthritis who have undergone normal obesity treatment regularly for 5 years or more will find the treatment becomes less effective over times. However, for patients suffering from lower limb pain or osteoarthristis, oriental obesity treatment, on the whole was effective in decreasing five key areas(5D). For this reason, it is necessary for oriental medicine to be given further study and consideration as an effective treatment of obesity.

  • Based on the fact that obesity is a complicated disease, we must treat obesity in a holistic way, but psychological factors are usually neglected in the clinical field. Oriental Medicine is basically holistic and psychosomatic, however, there are very few psychotherapy approaches in Oriental Medical treatment. In this review Oriental Medicine psychotherapy is outlined and a new model for oriental psychotherapy for the treatment of obesity is introduced. This program has a multi dimensional approach that includes behavioral, cognitive and spiritual components. The behavioral component relates to the discipline of diet and exercise. The cognitive aspect focuses on the mind. The third and possibly the most important component deals with one's spirit and awareness of their true self. This program is called "Yangsung" which means "Finding and raising one's true self."

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Uncoupling protein (UCP) polymorphisms on weight loss. We analyzed associations between polymorphisms of UCP-2, 3 and changes in percentage of obesity phenotypes (Body mass index and percent body fat) after treatment. Materials and Methods: A total of 207 Korean women (BMI over 25) were recruited from the obesity clinic in Kirin Oriental Medical Hospital (Seoul, Korea). All patients were treated with a very low calorie diet and oriental medical therapy for one month. The effect of UCP polymorphisms on changes in obesity-phenotypes were analyzed. For the genotyping of a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs), genomic DNA from each subject was extracted from whole blood and genotyped using the TaqMan Method. Associations between changes in percentage of obesity phenotypes (BMI and percent body fat) and UCP polymorphisms were analyzed using age-adjusted general linear model. Results and Conclusions: In this study, AG, GG type of UCP-2 -866A>G, CC, CT type of UCP-2 +4787C>T, CG, GG type of UCP-3 +2564C>G, AG, GG type of UCP-3 +3106A>G, and TC, CC type of UCP-3 +4589T>C played a role as a resistance gene to weight loss.
