The purpose of this study was to identify the adolescent girl's weight control practices, degree of obesity and body image. The data were collected from July 1st to 15th, 1996 using the questionnaire and the physical examination record. The subjects of this study were 295 junior high school girls. Darta were analyzed with percentages, means, t-test, ANOVA, Kruscal-Wallis one way ANOVA, Scheffe test and pearson correlation coefficients using the SPSS program. The results were as follows: 1. The mean for the degree of obesity in subjects was -1.26%. The 34.2% of the subjects were underweight, the 46.8% were normal, the 9.2% were overweight and the 9.8% were obese. The girls who perceived themselves obese were 39% and only the 47% of them were really over-weight and obese. 2. The mean score of body image was 139.30. It was 145.51 for underweight girls, 128.07 for normal weight girls and 125.17 for obese girls. The higher the degree of obesity was, the lower body image score was. The body image score of the girls who perceived themselves obese was significantly lower than that of the girls who perceived themselves normal or underweight. 3. The 65.1% of subjects experienced weight control practices. They reported that they had used the following weight control methods such as diet(42.2%), exercise(35.9%), diet and exercise(15.1%) and others including drug(6.8%). The degree of obesity was significantly higher and the body image score was significantly lower in the case of the girls who had weight control experiences than in the case of those who had no weight control experiences. 4. The 60% Of the subjects often had 2 meals per day. The 48.8% of the subjects tended to skip breakfast, the 7.8% would skip lunch and the 20% did not have dinner. The higher the degree of obesity was and the lower body image score was, the more the girls would skip their meals. In conclusion, many adolescent girls tended to believe their body weight heavier than their real body weight. Many girls who were not overweight and obese tried to lose weight. In the case of the girls whose degree of obesity was high or who perceived themselves obese, the body image score tended to get lower and the weight control practices tended to be increased.
Purpose: This study aims to investigate gender differences in the association between depressive symptoms and weight, weight perception, and body satisfaction among Korean adolescents. Methods: A secondary data analysis was performed on data from 33,374 adolescents who participated in the 2015 Adolescent Health Behavior Online Survey. They were classified as underweight, normal weight, or overweight/obese; weight perception was classified into perception of being underweight, normal weight, or overweight/obese; and weight satisfaction into desire to gain weight, satisfied, and desire to lose weight. Results: Among boys, perception of being underweight (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]: 1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07~1.35) and desire to gain weight (AOR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.30~1.62) were associated with depression. Among girls, perception of being overweight or obese (AOR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.07~1.29) and a desire to lose weight (AOR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.18~1.42) were associated with depression. Conclusion: Gender differences were observed in the association between weight perception and depression in adolescents. The perception of being underweight among boys and the perception of being overweight/overweight among girls were associated with depression. Thus, gender-specific intervention programs to correct weight perception and weight satisfaction are needed in order to relieve depressive symptoms in adolescents.
This study was undertaken to assess eating habits and food consumption pattern of 365 adolescent girls in Kwangju area. Subjects were divided into 3 groups based on relative body weight as obesity index. Anthropometric data showed that mean height and weight were $161.9{\pm}19.0cm$ and $53.3{\pm}7.2kg$ respectively which are similar to those in the Korean Standard Growth data. Mean BMI and relative body weight were 20.50 and 97.1%. Age of menarche in the subjects significantly influenced the obesity index. Food habit score in the underweight group was significantly lower than that in the normal group at ${\alpha}=0.2$ level by multiple range test. Obesity was significantly associated with more frequent and irregular eating. It seems that students in the obese group were concerned on their body weight and tended to consume much vegetable. Obese group consumed more fruits, less butter and fruit juice compared to other groups. It might be suggested that more effective nutrition program might be developed and implemented to ensure good food habit of adolescent girls including obese as well as underweight group.

The film The Whale goes beyond just depicting one aspect of the life of a morbidly obese man. As the audience watches Charlie, the main character who helplessly chose to live a morbidly obese life, we are compelled to reflect on what it means for ourselves to rise from the ground as we live in a gravitational field. Ultimately, this film is in line with director Darren Arnofsky's previous masterpiece, Black Swan. While the Oedipus complex runs through both films, this film goes one step further than Black Swan to face head-on the theme of "swollen foot," which is the original meaning of Oedipus. Through this move, we realize the essence of the Oedipus complex-something more fundamental than castration anxiety-something that we have been missing.
Objectives The relationships between adolescent depression and obesity, life style has been reported, but usually study results were not consistent with the study before. This study was designed to evaluate clear relationship between obesity and depressive trends, life styles in middle school students. Methods The study participants were the 1th, 2th grade students from one middle school in Kang dong Gu, Seoul(479 Students). The participants were measured their height and weight, and they were also surveyed by questionnaire. We diagnosed the students as depressives when they scored 10 points or above on Children's Depression Inventory(CDI) of Kovacs and Beck. Results The mean depression score in the obese group was significantly higher than that of the normal body weight group, and the more severely obese the group was, the higher the depression scores for this group were. The depression score of the boys obese group was higher than the girls obese group. The depression score was significantly higher in the obese group of people who hate to do exercising, like computer games and like watching TV instead, than in the group of people who like to do exercising and don't play computer games. Conclusions This study showed that depressive mood during adolescent was related to obesity and obesity-related lifestyles.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the current status of obesity intervention programs, and its effects on endothelium function in adolescents. Method: This was a descriptive research study, that investigated domestic and international literature 2009-2018. Using databases inside and outside of Korea to search for 'adolescent', 'obese adolescent', 'exercise', 'program', or 'intervention', and 'endothelium function', a total of 14 literature have been selected for 6 domestic research and 8 international research, excluding overlapping, case studies, literature reviews, and unrelated studies. Results: Interventions for enhancing endothelium function were exercise program, diet, vitamin D3 treatment, and Orlistat intake relative to international research, and combined exercise and purple sweet potato intake, in most domestic research. Dependent variables included FMD, RHI, NMD, EPCs, and EMPs, for measuring endothelium function in international research, and PWV, FMD and RHI, in domestic research. Conclusion: Results of this study confirmed that application of obese intervention programs, may improve endothelium function in adolescents. Further studies are required, to develop nursing intervention, that would enhance endothelium function in adolescents.
This study reports the clinical effects of Korean medicine treatments, herbal medicine, modified fasting, and space spinal conduction exercise and manipulation (SSCEM) on adolescent obesity patient. A 16-year-old male with a body mass index (BMI) 35.5 kg/m2 was diagnosed with class III obesity. We prescribed herbal medicine and modified fasting alternately three times over a period of five months. Additionally, Korean medicine treatments and SSCEM were performed during the treatment period. After treatment, there was a decrease in body weight by 19.86%, from 115.8 kg to 92.8 kg, BMI from 35.5 kg/m2 to 28.6 kg/m2, and body fat mass from 38.1 kg to 17.0 kg. The results of this study showed that Korean medicine treatments, herbal medicine, modified fasting, and SSCEM could be useful in influencing changes in body composition among obese adolescents.
The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of a 12-week aerobic exercise plus lifestyle modification on obese-induced metabolic syndrome in obese adolescent girls. A total of 52 obese adolescent girls (13-14 years old; body mass index (BMI) ${\geq}$95th percentiles for age and sex) purposely assigned to aerobic exercise group (AEG, n=15), aerobic exercise plus lifestyle modification group (ALG, n=18), or control group (CG, n=19). The AEG completed 12 weeks of walking exercise (30-60 min/day, 65-75% HRmax, 6 days/week), the ALG completed 12 weeks of walking exercise (30-60 min/day, 65-75% HRmax, 6 days/week) and behavior modification (60 min/day, 1 day/week), and the CG continued their normal life. The presence of the metabolic syndrome and component risk factors were determined before and after 12-week programs. The total prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was 48.1% in this sample (25/52) of participants at baseline. After the programs the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was improved in the AEG and ALG 33.3, 27.8%, respectively. Group analyses showed significant difference in risk factors of the metabolic syndrome such that the AEG and ALG had significantly greater improvements in waist circumference, triglycerides, blood glucose and systolic blood pressure than the CG, while there were no significant difference in HDL cholesterol and diastolic blood pressure. Also there was no group difference between AEG and ALG in all measured metabolic risk factors after the programs. These results indicate that the positive changes of the ALG were not associated with lifestyle modification (behavior modification) but associated with aerobic exercise. However, long-term follow up studies are necessary to clarify the additive effect of the behavior modification on the metabolic syndrome.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the dietary intake, obesity index and psychosocial factors influencing obesity among 200 high school girls in Seoul. The Social Cognitive Theory provided the Conceptual basis for this study. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to examine factors related to obesity, including self-efficacy for controlling overeating, social support for eating behavior, perception of body image and weight control, nutrition knowledge, and attitudes toward obesity. The data were analyzed using t-test and multiple logistic regression. The results of this study are as follows : 1) The mean age of the girls was 16.4 years, and the rate of overweight and obesity(measured by obesity index) was 27.0$\%$. 2) The mean energy intake of subjects was 1832.3$\pm$384.0kcal. The energy derived from carbohydrates, proteins and fats was 62.7$\%$, 13.8$\%$, and 23.5$\%$, respectively. There was no significant difference between the obese and the comparison group in energy intake. 3) The result of multivariate analysis indicated that obesity had a significant relation to the perception of ideal body image, social support for eating behavior, and self-efficacy for controlling overeating(p〈0.01). As subjects preferred thinner body images(OR=0.39) and received less social support(OR=0.93), the odds of being classified as obese increased. The odds of being obese were also associated with self-efficacy, however, the relation was not strong(OR=1.04). 4) Specific social support was related to obesity among adolescent girls. As subjects received more support from family member, the odds of being obese decreased. The emotional support as well as family member's positive nutrition behavior plays a significant role. In addition, instrumental support from friends was associated with obesity. With repect to self-efficacy, the odds of being obese were increased as subjects felt less confident in controlling overeating when tempting food was placed in front of them or after an argument. In contrast, the obese group felt more confident in controlling overeating for the rest of the specific situations examined. These findings suggest that educational interventions for weight control should incorporate strategies to help participants realize their degree of obesity, to reduce the discrepancy between current and ideal body image, to elicit and maintain social support from friends and family, and to increase the self-efficacy for changing eating behaviors. Purpose: The authors used a meta-analysis approach to investigate the effects of exercise on gender-specific triglyceride (TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in obese adolescents. Methods: This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis study to confirm the effect of exercise intervention according to gender for obese adolescents. PICO were obese a adolescents, exercise intervention, comparative intervention (control and general group),TG and HDL-C. Results: The group of obese male adolescents showed a statistically significant decrease of 51.72 in TG (n=175, MD=-51.72; 95% CI -52.44 to -51.00).There was a statistically significant increase of 4.44 in HDL-C (n=175, MD=4.44; 95% CI 3.79 to 5.10) in the group of obese male adolescents. Conclusion: Triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were analyzed to determine the effect of exercise interventions in obese adolescents according to gender differences. The results of this study can be used as basic data for the design of future exercise intervention studies, subjects, exercise methods, and intervention periods.
