The Luciola lateralis larva took 5.3 days from climbing on the land to the pupal cocoon formation. It took 6.6 days for a larva to eventually transform to a pupa after building a pupal cocoon. The size of pupal cocoon was 10.1 mm in length, 4.7 mm in width and its wall thickness was 1.3 mm. The mean pupal period was 10.5 days. The adult stayed 6.8 days in the pupal cocoon before escaping the cocoon. The peak adult emergence appeared around 9 p.m., and decreased after 10 p.m. The optimal soil temperature for emergence was $23.4^{\circ}C$. The female adult of the natural population (Nat-type) lived shorter, laid fewer eggs, and the oviposition frequency was fewer than that of the Lab-type individuals. However, a few individuals from the natural population laid 200-400 eggs. The less number of oviposition in the natural population may be due to the fact that the female adults might lay eggs before the collection for the experiment.
This study was investigation for primary bionomical characteristics, emergence rate of wintering type pupa and oviposition preference, of Papilio xuthus. The emergence rate of wintering type pupa stored at cold chamber($4{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) was 85%, after 10 months. The average emergence rate of wintering type pupa during storage was 89.6%, and the emergence periods were $7.9{\pm}1.9days$ in room temperature. Mating ratio in large oviposition room, $6,000{\times}6,000{\times}3,500$ mm($W{\times}L{\times}H$), was $86.7{\pm}5.8%$ higher than $63.3{\pm}15.3%$ in small room, $2,500{\times}3,000{\times}2,000$ mm($W{\times}L{\times}H$). But the number of eggs in the large room were $137.0{\pm}16.5$ fewer than $141.7{\pm}20.4$ in the small room. As a result of oviposition preference experiment on three different host plants, 10 mated female laid $141.7{\pm}27.8$ on the leaves of Phellodendron amurensew more than $67.7{\pm}20.6$ on Zanthoxylum schinifolium and $77.0{\pm}21.8$ on Citrus unshiu. The egg periods were $4.4{\pm}0.8$ days after oviposition, and the hatchability was 92.2% in $25^{\circ}C$ room condition. The larval period were $19.9{\pm}2.1$ days in the high temperature, long day condition($25^{\circ}C$, 14L : 10D). The headwidth of each developmental larval stage were $0.72{\pm}0.02$(1st), $1.19{\pm}0.02$(2nd), $1.65{\pm}0.05$(3rd), $2.43{\pm}0.07$(4th), $3.21{\pm}0.12$(5th). The pupal ratio was 91.6%. The pupal period were $8.8{\pm}0.9$ days, and the emergence rate was 92.2%.
These experiments were conducted to investigate the morphological characteristics, occurrence ecology, host preference, and oviposition of Locusta migratoria to create a forecasting manual in preparation for outbreaks of this species. The sex ratio (female:male) of 274 adult of L. migratoria which occurred naturally in the Muan region of Jeollanam-do was 18.2 : 81.8, 60.9% individuals were of the green type and 39.1% were of the brown type. Body length and body weight were 6.5 cm and 2.8 g for females and 5.0 cm and 1.5 g for males, respectively; body size did not differ between differently colored individuals. Spawning activity in the field was observed from late August to late October. Eggs laid between late September and early October hatched in late May the following year. Female adults fed 3.5 g of corn leaf and male adult was 1.6 g for a day. The host preference of L. migratoria was in the order corn > foxtail millet > millet > silver grass > rice, and preference for silver grass and rice was very low. Pure sand was most favorable for the spawning of L. migratoria, and the cumulative amount of hatching was higher when the soil moisture content was higher after spawning began.

This study was carried out to investigate the development and oviposition characteristics of Tenodera aridifolia. The nymphs of T. aridifolia grew to adults through 6 and 7 nymphal instars. The percentage of 7 nymphal instars (7-instar type) at 25, 28, and $30^{\circ}C$ were 77.3, 76.2, and 73.5%, respectively. In the 7 instars type, total nymphal periods at 25, 28, and $30^{\circ}C$ were 71.9, 53.5, and 54.7 days, respectively. And, there was no difference in deveolpmental periods between 6- and 7-instar types at all temperatures. Egg periods were 41.3 days at $25^{\circ}C$. Adult longevity of females were 82.0 days, deposited average 3.2 oothecae at intervals of 11.7~18.7 days at $28^{\circ}C$ during her life span. The first ootheca was the largest and $40.5mm{\times}22.0mm{\times}17.3mm$ in size. The number of average eggs per oothecae was 178.6 at $28^{\circ}C$.
1. Diluted chicken semen can be preserved at 2 to 5$^{\circ}C$ for 24 to 48 hr with resultant fertility of greater than 90% of that of fresh semen. Turkey semen can be preserved at 10 to 15$^{\circ}C$ for 6 to 24 hr and provide economical fertility. 2. Frozen chicken semen has given variable results; a 21 to 93% fertility ranges as compared to 92 to 94% expected with fresh semen. Highest fertility levels obtained with frozen turkey semen intravaginally inseminated have been 61 and 63% using DMSO and glycerol, respectively, as cryoprotectants. 3. The use of glycerol as a cryoprotectant reauires that its concentration in semen be reduced to less than 2% either by dialysis or centrifugation after thawing and before intravaginal insemination if optimal fertility is to be obtained. 4. The temperature at which cryoprotectants are added to semen and the time allowed for equilibration are important for subsequent fertility pre- and post-freezing. 5. The type of container used for packaging the semen, freeze or cooling rates, thaw rates and level of cryoprotectant all interact in affecting cell survival. 6. Plastic freeze straws as a packaging device for semen offers the following advantages: easy to handle, require minimal storage space, offer a wide range of freeze and thaw rates, and insemination can be made directly from them upon thawing. 7. Controlled slow cooling rates of 1 to 8$^{\circ}C$/min have thus far provided the best results for cooling chicken semen throught the transition phase change (liquid to solid) or critical temperature range of +5 to -20 or -35$^{\circ}C$. 8. Highest fertilities have been achieved with frozen chicken semen where a slow thaw rate (2。 to 5$^{\circ}C$) has been used regardless of the freeze rate. 9. To maintain a constant high level of fertility throughout a breeding season with frozen semen, a higher absolute number of spermatozoa must be inseminated (2 to 3 times as many) as compared to fresh semen since a, pp.oximately 50% are destroyed during processing and freezing. 10. The quality of semen may vary with season and age of the male. Such changes in sperm quality could be accentuated by storage effects. Thus, the correct number of spermatozoa may very well vary during the course of a breeding period. 11. As to time of insemination, it is best to avoid inseminating chicken hens within 1-2 hr after or 3-5 hr before oviposition; and turkey hens during or 7-10 hr before oviposition. 12. The physiological receptiveness of the oviduct at the time of insemination is a very important biological factor influencing fertility levels throughout the breeding season.
An experiment was conducted to investigate types of injury inflicted by the stone leek leafminer, Liriomyza chinensis Kato (Diptera: Agromyzidae) on welsh onion. A feeding scar made by an adult female was a hole round in shape, with diameter of 0.08 mm and 0.48 mm in lesion, resulting in a white spot, many of which often form vertical dotted lines on a leaf. Egg spots were oval with 0.1 ${\times}$0.14 mm in size, one or several of which often form a V-shape in group. Feeding by adults began immediately after emergence and was very active from 4th to 5th day. Oviposition was done from 2nd to 6th day after emergence. In both feeding and oviposition, they were more active in the day time. Larvae after emergence crawled up the leaf at first, and then moved up and down to feed on mesophyll. When in high density, they feed on leaf from leaf tip to bottom, and let the leaf die. Area of damage per one larva was calculated as 72.1 $\textrm{mm}^2$. The aged larvae escaped from the leaf in early morning, usually between 5 and 7 am. Most pupation sites were distributed near plants,5cm in soil depth and within 10 cm away from the plant. Pupae of L. chinensis overwintered 10cm below soil surface and emerged from early May to late June the next year Adults then moved to welsh onions near over wintering sites, nursery, transplanted, and levee.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the life history of the Three spotted plusia (Chrysodeixis agnata Staudinger) in the laboratory in 1976. (1) Female deposited $1202{\pm}150.6$ eggs during the oviposition period which was $13.3{\pm}1.2$ days. (2) Especially, larvae were distinguished with 5-instar type and 6-instar type. The egg period was 2 days and adult longevity was $21.29{\pm}3.15$ days for female and $19.14{\pm}2.47$ days for male. Larval period and pupal period were $15.36{\pm}1.59,\;7.82{\pm}1.01$ days for the 5-instar type and $16.92{\pm}1.08,\;8.23{\pm}1.09$ days for the 6-instar type. (3) Width of head capsule of the 5-instar type was $2.77\~2189mm$ and this of the 6-instar type was $2.78\~22.38mm$. (4) A highly significant correlation was recognized between the log-width of head capsule and the number of instar.
Queens of Korean native bumblebee species, Bombus ignitus were collected from the field in the spring of 1998 to investigate their ecological characteristics and reared under the laboratory conditions; 3 0 f 1$^{\circ}$C, 55 25% of relative humidity and darkness. As a result, 94.4% of the queens laid eggs in 6.00f 2.41 days after the field collection. The first worker and the first drone from the egg cell of the collected queens appeared in 18.90 f 1.16 and 68.96 f 3.94 days, respectively. In the colony foundation, 86.1% of the collected queens founded their colony, and 96.8% of them produced new queens in 71.14f 6.88 days. The life span of the colony-founded queen covered for 86.90f24.35 days, whereas that of non-colonized queen for 15.67 f 7.37 days. One colony sized as big as 987.82f 145.84 in number, composing of workers (188.79f 18.23), drones (691.10f 159.24) and queens (107.93 f47.48). Copulation lasting time of queen and drone took 23.00f 7.33 minutes in average. In a new queen emergence, there were two patterns; single peak type of new queen emergence in 12.31 k6.95 days and two peaks type of it in 74.00f 17.61 days. The number of eggs per egg cell of new queen averaged as 8.86f 4.00 grains and an egg period covered 3 days after oviposition. An egg cell sized as 7.15 f0.88 mm in a width, 7.79 f 1 .l 1 mm in a length and 3.33 f 0.23 mm in a height. An egg shaped as banana and sized as 1.22 f 0.09 mm in a width and as 3.5 1 f 0.21 mm in a length, weighing as 2.70 + 0.30 mg.
The study was initiated to investigate the nature of varietal resistance to the rice stem borer (Chilo suppressalis WALKER), specially the rotation of the resistance to the silica and nitrogen content of the host Plants. 1. The body freight of the larvae, reared on the stem of the various varieties of rice plants, when weighed at the age of 25 days old, showed great variation, and ranged from 21.24 mgrs. to 45.77 mgrs. depending on the used varieties of tile rice plants. And generally the varieties of Indica types were showed greater body weight than that of Japonica types in this experiments. 2. The positive correlation coefficients of percent survivals to body weight, developement, oviposition preference and rate of damage to host plants were significant, and consequently the percent survival could be used as a criteria of resistance. 3. The content of silica in the host plants was significantly correlated with both the degree of boring on the leaf and attractovemess of larvae, and the total nitrogen content of plants showed significant positive correlation coefficient with larval attractivenes, but not significant with the degree of boring on the leaf. 4. Since the attractiveness and boring manner were significantyly correlated to resistance criteria of rice plant to the pest, it could be considered that the resistance is the results of chain reaction of the factors mentioned above.
This study was carried out to investigate the biological performance of the brownplanthopper, Nilaparvata lugens Stal, reared on rice plants at different growth stages; maximum tillering, booting, heading with and without panicles, and milking. The results obtained are as follows: The rice plants at the maximum tillering stage gave the best in the longevity, oviposition period, and the total number of oviposited eggs for the macropterous females, and the worst with the booting stage. For the brachypterous females, however, the best results were obtained from the rice of which their panicles had removed after heading. There was no significant difference in the hachability of eggs and the developmental period of the nymphs in the next generation, but the nymphal mortality was the highest with the milking stage and the lowest with the maximum tillering and heading stage without panicles. The longest life span was shown in males derived on the maximum tillering stage, and the shortest for milking(macropterous type) or booting (brachypterous type) stages. Coefficientes of variances in longevity and number of eggs for the adults emerged from heading stage without panicles were lower than those with panicles intact, and such trend was more obvious in brachypterous adults, especially for the females. The biological performances of the BPH have close relationship with the translocated organic material at the feeding site which showed considerable difference with the growth stages of the rice.
