  • This paper studies the uplink resource allocation for multiple radio access (MRA) in reconfigurable radio systems, where multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) multicarrier-code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) and MIMO orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) networks coexist. By assuming multi-radio user equipment with network-guided operation, the optimal resource allocation for MRA is analyzed as a cross-layer optimization framework with and without fairness consideration to maximize the uplink sum-rate capacity. Numerical results reveal that parallel MRA, which uses MC-CDMA and OFDMA networks concurrently, outperforms the performance of each MC-CDMA and OFDMA network by exploiting the multiuser selection diversity.

  • In this paper, the frequency sharing issue between time division duplex-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing/orthogonal frequency division multiple access(TDD-OFDM/OFDMA) based systems beyond third generation(B3G) and fixed Satellite Service(FSS) earth station has been studied. The conventional advanced minimum coupling loss(A-MCL) is adopted to assess the interference from a single base station(BS) of B3G systems. The aggregated interferences from base stations and mobile stations(MS) are evaluated by applying the extended A-MCL and analysed with a cumulative density function(CDF). The minimum distances that enable a single FSS earth station to sharing the frequency with a single BS are between 4 and 53.3 km. In the case of 20 MS per sector, the BS-to-BS distance and the minimum distance between a ES and BS are 6.5 and 2.8 km, respectively.

  • Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) is widely used as a multiple access technique for next generation mobile communication systems, however, its main drawback is the high peak-to-average ratio (PAPR). Thus for the uplink case where the transmit power is strictly limited due to the battery life of mobile units, single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) with low PAPR is preferred to OFDMA method. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the performance of SC-FDMA using frequency domain MMSE equalization. The proposed improved log-likelihood ratio (LLR) generation method exploits both the diversity characteristic of channels and the reciprocity that is obtained from the received signals. The complexity of the proposed method is analyzed and its performance gain is demonstrated via a set of computer simulations.

  • Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technologies provide additional dimensions of freedom with spectral and spatial resources for radio resource management. Multi-dimensional radio resource management has recently been identified to exploit the full dimensions of freedom for more flexible and efficient utilization of scarce radio spectrum while provide diverse quality of service (QoS) guarantees. In this work, a multi-dimensional radio resource scheduling scheme is proposed to achieve above goals in hybrid orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and space division multiple access (SDMA) systems. Cochannel interference (CCI) introduced by frequency reuse under SDMA is eliminated by frequency division and time division between highly interfered users. This scheme maximizes system throughput subjected to the minimum data rate guarantee. for heterogeneous users and transmit power constraint. By numerical examples, system throughput and fairness superiority of the our scheduling scheme are verified.

  • In cellular OFDMA(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) systems, each subcarrier may suffer from different amount of interferences from neighbor cells. Suppose that it is possible to accurately estimate inter-cell interferences for each subcarrier, the performance can be considerably improved by applying SINR(Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio) weighting. This paper proposes an inter-cell interference estimation method for cellular OFDMA systems. The proposed method extracts amounts of noise and interferencesby eliminating the channel variation effects of pilot symbols caused by frequency offset, timing offset mobile velocity, and delay spread.

  • This paper presents a simple resource allocation scheme for throughput enhancement in relay based orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) cellular systems. The resource allocation schemes, which are based on the optimization problem, have high computational complexity. That is why a searching process is required on the overall allocable resources. Since these schemes should be performed in real time, we propose a simple resource allocation scheme which has very low computational complexity. Firstly, we formulate the optimization problem and draw observations for throughput maximization. Based on observations, we propose a three step allocation scheme that separates the allocable resources into three (i.e. relay, frequency and time). By doing so, the computational complexity can be reduced. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has near-optimum performance in spite of its low computational complexity.

  • We consider user pairing and resource allocation for the uplink of cellular systems employing virtual multiple input multiple output (MIMO). As a multiple access scheme, discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiple access (DFTS-OFDMA) is adopted for more flexible resource allocation than single carrier (SC)-OFDMA adopted in the Long Term Evolution (LTE) system. We formulate the optimization problems of user pairing and resource allocation to maximize the throughput of the DFTS-OFDMA system under different constraints. The DFTS-OFDMA allowing non-contiguous subcarrier allocation and redundant user assignment provides a better throughput than the SC-FDMA at lower complexity in finding the optimal solution but at the cost of the increased control information indicating the allocated resources.

  • In this paper, we propose a collision avoidance scheduling to increase the multiuser diversity gains in the adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system. The scheduling policy is based on the minimum collision criterion which investigates the differences of user channels. The paper includes the derivation of capacity expressions for the adaptive OFDMA system with the proposed scheduling. The analysis shows that the capacity of the system depends on the number of collisions between the selected users to be simultaneously served. Numerical results show that the proposed scheduling provides improved capacity performance over existing ones.

  • We propose a hybrid multiple access (HMA) for uplink orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, which combines two resource sharing schemes: a scheduling-based resource allocation (SBRA) scheme and a contentionbased resource allocation (CBRA) scheme. The SBRA scheme is appropriate for non-real time high data rate traffic, and, CBRA is appropriate for near-real time low/medium data rate traffic. Thus, the proposed HMA scheme supports various types of traffic. As a CBRA scheme, our proposed random frequency hopping (RFH)-OFDMA scheme was presented. Simulation results show that the proposed HMA yields the best performance among various resource allocation schemes for uplink OFDMA systems.
