To develop suitable alternative substrates in hydroponics of sweet pepper, changes of water contents of substrates and electric conductivity (EC) of drainage nutrient solution, growth and fruit characteristics according to the kind of coir substrates were investigated compared with rockwool. In all coir substrates compared with rockwool during growing period, water contents were higher, EC of drainage nutrient solution except for fiber 50% were lower, and the coefficient of variation were a little, especially were so in fiber 30% of coir substrates. Plant growth in fiber 30% substrate was better than others but there was no significant difference. Photosynthesis rate and chlorophyll content were best in fiber 50% substrate. Fruit weight was no significant difference, but LID ratio and shape of the fruits were good in fiber 50% substrate and rockwool as which were close to regular square. Therefore, it was estimated that mixed coir substrates with fiber $30{\sim}50%$ are enough in possibility as alternative substrate.
Bog bean (Menyanthes trifoliata L.) is an endangered species in Korea and a perennial macrophyte with long rhizome, inhabiting in oligotrophic fen or edges of montane lakes. To decide appropriate substrate type for restoration of this plant, we investigated the effect of substrates (e.g. water, Sphagnum mat, paddy soil) on growth of bog bean. There were two water conditions on paddy soils: saturated and flooded. We planted 10cm rhizome in mesocosms and measured coverage, leaf area, leaf number and rhizome biomass. Bog bean growed until August in water and Sphagnum mat and until October in paddy soil. Rhizome biomass at the end of November were 49, 77, 239, and 312g in water, Sphagnum mat, paddy soil with water saturated, and paddy soil with water flooded conditions, respectively. The results indicate that bog bean can grow better in paddy soil which have higher nutrient than water or Sphagnum mat which represents natural habitat condition of bog bean. This reveals that actual ecological niche of bog bean is different from fundamental ecological niche in substrate. For successful restoration of bog bean in nutrient rich area, it is necessary to know the competitiveness of bog bean in various substrate conditions.
Organic materials reveal the remarkable absorption and high buffer capacity for nutrient. Hence, organic materials need some different nutrient management skill from inorganic one. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of EC level of nutrient solution on the yield and quality of cut rose grown in the mixed substrate of coir and perlite. 3 EC levels of nutrient solution was treated, which were 0.7, 1.0, 1.3 times of standard solution (Aichiken solution, Japan) for cut rose hydroponics. EC of the standard solution was changed by season following as 1.4 (Apr.~June), 1.0 (July~Aug.), 1.4 (Sep.~Oct.), and $1.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ (Nov.~Mar.) subsequently. The supply of nutrient solution was controlled by the signal of water potential at -5kPa using frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) sensor. As the results, marketable yield was similar for all treatments until 3rd harvest, but was decreased in high EC level from 4th harvest to 7th harvest as final. 0.7 times of standard solution decreased the ratio of unmarketable rose having short stem below 70cm and increased the ratio of high quality rose having long stem above 91cm. The flower weight and stem diameter of cut rose was higher in the low EC treatment than the others.
This study was conducted to evaluate the ensiling characteristics and the in situ degradability of a by-product feed (BF)-based silage. Before ensilation, the BF-based mixture was composed of 50% spent mushroom substrate, 21% recycled poultry bedding, 15% ryegrass straw, 10.8% rice bran, 2% molasses, 0.6% bentonite, and 0.6% microbial inoculant on a wet basis and ensiled for up to 4 weeks. The BF-based silage contained on average 39.3% moisture, 13.4% crude protein (CP), and 52.2% neutral detergent fiber (NDF), 49% total digestible nutrient, and 37.8% physically effective $NDF_{1.18}$ on a dry matter (DM) basis. Ensiling the BF-based silage for up to 4 weeks affected (p<0.01) the chemical composition to a small extent, increased (p<0.05) the lactic acid and $NH_3$-N content, and decreased (p<0.05) both the total bacterial and lactic acid bacterial counts from $10^9$ to $10^8$ cfu/g when compared to that before ensiling. These parameters indicated that the silage was fermented and stored well during the 4-week ensiling period. Compared with rice or ryegrass straws, the BF-based silage had a higher (p<0.05) water-soluble and filterable fraction, a lower insoluble degradable DM and CP fraction (p<0.05), a lower digestible NDF (p<0.05) fraction, a higher (p<0.05) DM and CP disappearance and degradability rate, and a lower (p<0.05) NDF disappearance and degradability rate. These results indicated that cheap, good-quality BF-based roughage could be produced by ensiling SMS, RPB, rice bran, and a minimal amount of straw.
In this present study, Aspergillus niger NRRL 567 was cultivated on an inert support material and the effects of various fermentation parameters including temperature, nutrient solution pH, inoculation level, and moisture content were observed and optimized by one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) and response surface methodology (RSM), sequentially. It was found that the incubation temperature of $30^{\circ}C$ with 75% moisture content, nutrient solution pH of 7.1 and inoculation level of $4.0{\times}10^6$ spores/ml were the most favorable. Again, fermentation parameters were optimized using RSM. The determined optimum condition is $26.5^{\circ}C$, pH 9.9, 75.1%, and $6.0{\times}10^6$ spores/ml. Under this optimized condition, A. niger NRRL 567 produced 118.8 g citric acid/kg dry peat moss at 72 hr. Maximum citric acid production of optimized condition by RSM represented a 1.6-fold increase compared to that obtained from control experiment.
Background: Literature is lacking on the effects of feeding by-product feed (BF)-based silage on rumen fermentation parameters, nutrient digestion and nitrogen (N) retention in sheep. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effect of replacing rye straw with BF-based silage as a roughage source on ruminal parameters, total-tract apparent nutrient digestibility, and N balance in sheep. Methods: The by-product feed silage was composed of spent mushroom substrate (SMS) (45 %), recycled poultry bedding (RPB) (21 %), rye straw (11 %), rice bran (10.8 %), corn taffy residue (10 %), protected fat (1.0 %), bentonite (0.6 %), and mixed microbial additive (0.6 %). Six sheep were assigned randomly to either the control (concentrate mix + rye straw) or a treatment diet (concentrate mix + BF-based silage). Results: Compared with the control diet, feeding a BF-based silage diet resulted in similar ruminal characteristics (pH, acetate, propionate, and butyrate concentrations, and acetate: propionate ratio), higher (p < 0.05) ruminal NH3-N, higher (p < 0.05) ether extract digestibility, similar crude protein digestibility, lower (p < 0.05) dry matter, fiber, and crude ash digestibilities, and higher (p < 0.05) N retention (g/d) Conclusion: The BF-based silage showed similar energy value, higher protein metabolism and utilization, and lower fiber digestion in sheep compared to the control diet containing rye straw.
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of electrical conductivity (EC) of nutrient solution on the growth, nutrient uptake of potted kalanchoe plants ($Kalanchoe$$blossfeldiana$ 'New Alter') and the nutrient accumulation at the growing media with growth stage in ebb and flow subirrigation systems. Significant differences in leaf area, plant height, and dry weight of the plants were found among the different ECs of nutrient solution of 0.8, 1.6, 2.4, and $3.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Particularly the difference in plant growth became significantly greater from 5 weeks after treatment. The overall growth was the highest at EC $1.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Leaf area, plant height, and dry weight were maintained higher when EC increased to $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, but rapidly decreased after EC $3.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. The uptake of NO3-N was the greatest while that of $Mg^{2+}$ was the lowest at EC $1.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, even though small differences were found among macro elements. The EC at the top layer of the growing media was 1 to 3 times higher than that at the bottom layer. Nutrient accumulation was accelerated in both the top and bottom layers with growth stage. At EC $3.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, the growth of the plants was suppressed due to higher nutrient accumulation at the growing media. From the results, the strength and composition of nutrient solution should be determined by considering nutrient accumulation at the growing media in addition to EC of nutrient solution in ebb and flow subirrigation systems.

Growing plant in potting media without soil is known as Soilless cultivation. This method is used mostly in greenhouse cultivation to increase horticultural commodities production. Peat moss is commonly utilized as potting media substrate because of its characteristic. However, peat moss price is high because of the quantity of peat moss in nature has been decreased. Recently, most of the research is conducted to find the alternative growing medium to cultivate horticulture plant in potting media. Perlite and rice husk ash were mentioned that had a potent as alternative growing media for seasonal plants to increase agriculture production due to the lack of production area. This study aimed to determine the effect of using different substrate and growth performance of chili. The method used was the soilless cultivation. The chili was planted in the pot with perlite media, rice husk ash media, and peat moss media. The chili was measured after 65 days after planting. The result showed that rice husk ash and perlite were more potentials in chili growth performance than peat moss. Rice husk ash had the significant result of plant height. While, Perlite effect on root length, plant weight, leaf length, and stem diameter. The best alternative for cultivation chili without substrate based on this research was perlite then rice husk ash and peat moss.

This study was conducted to evaluate the yield, nutrient characteristics, ruminal solubility, degradability and disappearance of spent mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) substrates for ruminants. The annual yield of spent Agaricus bisporus substrates was measured to be about 210,000 tons (M/T) in South Korea. The surface soil-removed spent substrates had nutritional characteristics of high crude ash (375 g/kg) and Ca (32 g/kg), medium protein (134 g/kg CP), and high fiber (384 g/kg NDF on a DM basis). Compared with initial mushroom substrates, spent mushroom substrates had twice higher (p<0.0001) CP content and 22.0% lower (p<0.0001) NDF content on an organic matter basis. Compared with raw rice straw, spent rice straw had much higher (p<0.05) predicted ruminal degradabilities and disappearances of DM and CP and a little lower (p<0.05) predicted degradability and disappearance of NDF. In conclusion, the general feed-nutritional value of spent mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) substrates appeared to improve after cultivation of mushrooms.

The feasibility of the up- and down-flow constructed wetland was examined fur rural wastewater treatment in Korea. Many constructed wetland process was suffered from substrate clogging and high plant stresses because of long term operation. The up- and down-flow constructed wetland process used porous granule materials (charcoal pumice : SSR=10:20:70) for promoting intake rate of nutrient to plant, and especially flow type was designed continuously repeating from up-flow to down-flow. $BOD_5$ and SS was removed effectively by the process with the average removal rate being about 75% respectively. The wetland process was effective in treating nutrient as well as organic pollutant. Removal of TN and TP were more effective than other wetland system and mean effluent concentrations were approximately 7.5 and $0.4mg\;L^{-1}$ which satisfied the water quality standard for WWTPs. The treatment system did not experience any clogging or accumulations of pollutants and reduction of treatment efficiency during winter period because constructed polycarbonate glass structure prevented temperature drop. Considering stable performance and effective removal of pollutant in wastewater, low maintenance, and cost-effectiveness, the up- and down-flow constructed wetland was thought to be an effective and feasible alternative in rural area.
