  • Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of a nursing skills enhancement program in improving the self-efficacy and self-esteem of senior nursing students. Methods: This was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design study that enrolled 306 senior nursing students. The nursing students were randomly assigned to an experimental(n=132) or control group (n=174), and students assigned to the experimental group completed a nursing skills enhancement program, which consisted of four skills training components: IV infusion, enema, $O_2$ therapy by means of cannulation and urinary catheterization. Data were analyzed with frequency, the chi-squared test, and the paired t-test using the SPSS/pc 15.0 statistical program. Results: Our results showed that the self-esteem and self-efficacy of nursing students who were assigned to the nursing skills enhancement program were significantly better compared to those of nursing students in the control group (t=10.198 and t=6.452, for self-efficacy and self-esteem, respectively, p<.001 for both variables). Conclusion: Our findings clearly show that a nursing skills enhancement program is effective in improving the self-efficacy and self-esteem of senior nursing students.

  • Purpose: This study was undertaken to develop and test a mastery learning program of nursing skills for undergraduate nursing students. Methods: In this methodological study, first, the preliminary draft of a mastery learning program to provide training for nursing skills was developed based on Bloom's framework for mastery learning. Second, to test the developed program, a single-blinded, nonequivalent control group nonsynchronized study was conducted on 50 senior nursing students in a University selected by convenient sampling. Thirteen students were assigned to a control group; 13, 12, and 13 of them were assigned to intravenous therapy, transfusion, and patient transfer groups, respectively. The achievement levels and performance scores of the selected nursing skills were measured before and after the completion of the program in all the groups. Lastly, the final program was confirmed based on the results of the program testing. Results: Intravenous therapy, transfusion, and patient transfer were selected as essential nursing skills for the program based on the priorities rated by clinical instructors and staff nurses. The achievement levels of selected nursing skills were determined by Angoff scores. After participating in the program, the proportion of passers and performance scores of the nursing skills in the experimental groups were significantly higher than those in the control group. The final program was confirmed which included a diagnostic test, enrichment activities for the passers and three repetitions of corrective activities and formative assessments for non-passers. Conclusion: The results suggest that a mastery learning program for undergraduate students can lead to better improvement and performance of essential nursing skills.

  • In this paper, we propose basic materials for effective education of essential basic nursing skills and empirical base supporting the strengthening of essential basic nursing skills. An investigation was conducted with nursing college students ready for an employment on the relationship between the students' knowledge level of essential basic nursing skills and their satisfaction level against the clinical practice. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, scheffē test and Pearson's correlation coefficients. in SPSS WIN 21.0 program. The findings of this study were as follows. 1) The knowledge level of essential basic nursing skills received a score of 88.95. 'Admission management' item received the highest score of 4.96 point on a 5 point scale while 'Retention urinary catheterization' item received the lowest score of 3.06. The higher the difficulty level of essential basic nursing skills was, the lower the knowledge level of it was. 2) The satisfaction against the clinical practice received a score of 3.28. In the clinical practice area, the satisfaction against the curriculum received a score of 3.84, the satisfaction against clinical practice contents a score of 3.39, the satisfaction against clinical practice environment a score of 3.17, the satisfaction against clinical practice time a score of 3.15. There was a significant correlation between the knowledge level of essential basic nursing skills and clinical practice satisfaction. These findings indicate that a systematic education of essential basic nursing skills could improve nursing students' satisfaction against the clinical practice.

  • The effectiveness of medication video tapes in teaching fundamental nursing skills was investigated using experimental research methodology. Data was collected from 153 students attending fundamental nursing practice classes of two junior colleges and two universities. The subjects were randomly assigned to two groups, one was an experimental group of 74 subjects and the other was a control group of 79 subjects. The independent variable was learning type and the dependent variables were the degree of knowledge achievement and nursing skills achievement regarding medication. The research hypotheses of this study were as follows : 1) There will be a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in the degree of knowledge achievement about medication. 2) There will be a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in the nursing skills achievement about medication. The data was analyzed with the SPSSWIN program and the t-test, number of subjects and percentiles were then examined. The findings of this study are as follows : 1) There was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in the knowledge achievement about medication using P<.05. 2) There was no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in the nursing skill achievement about medication using P<.05. 3) This study suggests that medication video tapes in the education of fundamental nursing skills are effective for knowledge achievement. As a result, medication video tapes can be effectively utilized for the education of nursing skills regarding medication.
