Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of upper extremity exercise training on the motor activity, the ADL and the health related quality of life. Method: A non-equivalent pretest-posttest design was used. Study subjects were conveniently selected 40 hemiplegic patients(20 experimental subjects, 20 control subjects) who had been enrolled in two community health centers. After biofeedback training the subjects of experimental group were given constraint-induced movement, involving restraint of unaffected U/E in a sling for about 6 hours over a period of two weeks, while at the same time intensively training the affected U/E. Outcomes were evaluated on the basis of motor activity(amount, quality) of plegic side, ADL(ADL, IADL) and health related QOL(SF-36). Results: 1. After 2 weeks of treatment, the amount of use and the quality of motor activity of affected U/E were significantly higher in subjects who participated in exercise training than in subjects in the control group. 2. There were no significant differences in ADL and IADL between experimental and control groups. 3. After 2 weeks of treatment, the health related QOL was significantly higher in subjects who participated in exercise training than in subjects in the control group. Conclusion: The above results state that the U/E exercise training could be an effective intervention for improving the motor activity and the health related QOL of chronic hemiplegic patients. Long-term studies are needed to determine the lasting effects of constraint-induced movement.
This study was planned and carried out in an attempt to investigate health status and life style. Using a guidline developed by the researcher open-ended interviews were done with a hundred and sixty Korean elderly people, from April 17, through June 2, 1988. The data were analyzed by frequencies, means, percentile scores and Chisquare-test. Major health deviations identified are ; arthritis, blood pressure discrepancies, neuralgia, and powerlessness. Discomfort in relation to elimination(75%) and to rest-activity, especially to the activities of daily living(78%) are experienced ; 11% revealed to be in need of assistance from others. One or more sensory discrepancies are complained by 75% of the subjects. Only 20% of the subjects reported being satisfied with the life-time achievements. Factors revealed that 'descendants' were the major source of pleasure. Leisure hours were spent mostly 'watching TV' 'Healthy life', 'harmonious family life' and 'frequent communication with the family' were the three most frequent wishes towards their family members. 'Insurance for ageing', 'free health care', 'work', 'cultural facilities' and 'warm attention' were the request toward the society.
Purpose: This study was done to identity the spiritual state of elderly women who live alone, and factors which affect their spiritual well-being. It was a predictive study using correlations. Methods: Data were collected to identify spiritual well-being of underprivileged older women who live alone and their demographic characteristics, activities of daily living, social support, self-efficacy, and health promotion behavior. Participants were 210 underprivileged women, over 65 years of age and living in permanent-rented apartments in Kyonggi Province. Collected data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results: Scores for spiritual well-being were higher than the medium, 3.77, out of a possible 6. Health promotion behavior (${\beta}$=.22, t=3.51, p=.001), religion (${\beta}$=.38, t=7.95, p<.001), self-efficacy(${\beta}$=.25, t=4.63, p<.001), social support received (${\beta}$=.23, t=3.96, p<.001), length of time living alone (${\beta}$=.12, t=2.51, p=.013), and age (${\beta}$=.11, t=2.24, p=.026) were significant factors affecting spiritual well-being. Conclusion: The result of the study indicate that to enhance the well-being of underprivileged elderly women, it is necessary to increase health-promotion activity rates and identify mediation strategies to promote social support and self-efficacy.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the concept of deconditioning within the field of nursing allied health sciences. Method: The concept analysis method described by Walker and Avant(1995) was used. Critical attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents were identified. Also model, borderline, contrary and related cases were proposed. Results: The definition of concept 'deconditioning' was a decrease in the function of general system that occured after long periods of immobility and might be marked by frail upon return to normal conditions. The attributes of deconditioning were as follows; 1) the deconditioning was caused by lengthening of physical inactivity; 2) the deconditioning state was resulted by respiratory system, cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system, hematologic system and generalized manifestation; 3) the deconditioning state could be reconditioned. 4) The reinforced functions by exercise could be compromised by physical inactivity. Conclusion: Deconditioning is important concept in nursing practice since it occurs commonly in any patients who lack physical activity for long time and affects many aspects of clinical outcomes, but it could be reversible by nurses' efforts.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine perceived needs for exercise programs among adults in the workforce based on sociodemographic characteristics and health-related behaviors. Methods: The sample consisted of 182 office workers, sales workers, and service workers recruited at a worksite in Seoul (97 males and 85 females, Mean age=34.6, SD=7.71). Study participants completed a structured questionnaire on health-related behaviors and areas of needs for exercise programs. Analysis of data was performed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. Results: Workers with greater interest in exercise reported to engage in exercise. Significant differences were observed in goals of exercise, preferred exercise, preferred methods for delivery of exercise, preferred exercise monitoring, and social support for exercise maintenance according to age, sex, marital status, education, commuting time, occupation, alcohol use, smoking, and current participation in exercise. There were no differences in areas of exercise program needs by consumption of high calorie foods. Conclusion: Public health nurses can use these findings for development and implementation of tailored exercise programs to promote health for workers whose physical activity is insufficient.
Purpose: Vitamin D is a fundamental element for bone metabolism. Recently vitamin D deficiency has been implicated in various diseases such as a cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancers. The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors associated with serum vitamin D deficiency among women office workers. Methods: We selected 369 women office workers using the secondary data of the 5th National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2012. Data was analyzed by logistic regression of complex sampling design. Results: Women office workers with vitamin D deficiency, defined serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration < 10ng/mL, were 12.5%. The risk factors for vitamin D deficiency were 20s aged group, married state and more than 40 working hours a week. The risk of vitamin D deficiency was decreased in those with alcohol drinking 1 to 4 times a month. The education level, income, region, smoking, physical activity and sun exposure time did not affect the risk of vitamin D deficiency significantly. Conclusion: Development of vitamin D deficiency prevention educational programs are required for women office workers who more than 40 hours a week in 20s. It should be considered health education including sun exposure duration and behavior.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the effect size of intervention programs for married immigrant women as well as to suggest the basic data for health care practices for married migrant women. Methods: Meta-analysis was conducted with 27 articles from domestic Korea master's and doctorate degree dissertations and Korea academic journals from 2007 to 2014. Results: Overall average effect size was 1.17 and 'parental education' of Intervention Variables was the biggest effect size. Intervention Variables were also identified to be the most desirable in cases when total sessions were applied with 10-18 sessions, 1 session per week, 90-120 minutes per session activity time and with less than 10 subjects in group size. Regarding effect variables, psychological variable group was identified to show the biggest effect size and in sub-variables, self-efficacy was identified to show the biggest effect size. Conclusion: If intervention programs for married immigrant women is expanded and conducted based on the results of this study, the program would have significant affect psychological, social and physical health of the married migrant women who currently occupy the important status in our society.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the internet based coaching program for obesity management on weight control related knowledge, self-efficacy, eating habits, physical activity and obesity related physiological indexes in hypertensive patients. Methods: The study design was non-equivalent control group pre-test-post-test design. A total of 43 subjects were overweight or obese hypertensive patients aged 30 or older, who were divided into experimental group (n=23) and control group (n=20). This program lasting 12 weeks consisted of a weight control related education, internet based individual coaching for diet, exercise and behavior modification, offering internet community and health counseling. The variables were measured three times (before the treatment, after 6 weeks, and after 12 weeks) and the collected data were analyzed by SPSS/WIN 17.0 program. Results: The experimental group had significantly improved weight control related knowledge, self efficacy, eating habits, body composition, and systolic blood pressure with time. Conclusion: The internet based coaching program was effective in improving obesity management, also this program will help to prevent cardiovascular disease of obese hypertensive patients.
Purpose: Obesity among children from low-income families is becoming a social problem. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an obesity prevention program that included physical activity, nutrition education, behavioral modification, and primary caregiver participation components among children from low-income families. Methods: The study analyzed a nonequivalent control group using a pretest-posttest design. A total of 77 children were recruited from six community childcare centers using purposive sampling. For the intervention group (n=40), the pretest was administered before the combined intervention program involving the participants' primary caregivers was conducted for 8 weeks. The posttest was conducted immediately after the program and again four weeks after the program. Results: Flexibility (F=4.64, p=.020), muscular endurance (F=11.22, p<.001), nutritional knowledge scores (F=4.79, p=.010), body image satisfaction scores (F=4.74, p=.012), and self-esteem scores (F=3.81, p=.029) showed significant differences and interactions between group and time for the intervention and control groups. Conclusion: Strategies to actively engage the primary caregivers of low-income families in children's obesity programs are needed. Obesity prevention programs for children based on the program in this study should be routinely developed, and continuing attention should be given to children from low-income families.
To evaluate the effect of different housing systems on sow behavior, 80 gilts were randomly allocated at puberty to four treatments: i) sow stall in gestation followed by farrowing crate (SC), ii) group housing with individual feeding in gestation followed by farrowing crate (GC), iii) ESF (Electronic Sow Feeding) system in gestation followed by farrowing crate (EC), and iv) ESF system followed by group farrowing pen (EG). Behavioral observations were carried out on a total of 16 animals per treatment at the following stages: first day of allocation to housing treatment, day of service, 80 days after service, 109 days after service on entry to farrowing accommodation, 24 h before farrowing, day of farrowing, 14, 27 and 28 days after farrowing, at weaning. On each occasion, individual animals were observed for a 24 period with one minute time sampling. There were significant differences (p<0.001) between stages of the reproductive cycle for all the behavior patterns in all treatments. On the first day in experimental housing treatments, sows spent more time rooting and dog-sitting. Activity and investigatory behavior decreased as pregnancy progressed. An activity peak was apparent just before farrowing, followed by a high level of inactivity on the day of farrowing. Time spent active, eating and drinking increased as lactation progressed, and greatest activity and locomotion was seen immediately following weaning. There were significant differences between housing treatments (p<0.01) for standing, moving, eating, drinking, dog-sitting and lying. During pregnancy SC sows spent more time standing, rooting, drinking and dog sitting, while EC sows spent less time rooting and drinking and more time lying. During lactation, GC sows spent more time standing, moving and eating, less time dog sitting and lateral lying. Nursing frequency was reduced in GC sows (p<0.001). The maternal and piglet behaviors were influenced strongly by environment during lactation. However, it was also shown that previous housing history can influence the maternal behavior in the pre-farrowing stage and during early lactation.
