Data collected with the self-administered Okayama Medical Index Health Questionnaire(devised Cornell Medical Index) from 466 Korean and 688 Japanese Nursing Students were analyzed. The subjects were 18 to 24 years old in their 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year-class of nursing department. The total O.M.I. score(section A-R) ranged from 1 to 110 with an average of 22.3(SD=11.5) in Korean nursing students and 18.3(SD=10.1) in Japanese nursing students. A statistically significant inverse correlation was observed between Korean nursing student and Japanese nursing students for the overall health complaints. Korean nursing students have more health problems than Japanese nursing students in terms of physical and overall health complaints excluding psychological problems. About $4\%$ of Korean nursing students were current smokers and $64.2\%$ of Korean nursing students were drinker. Korean nursing students in the drinker's group were more likely to eat fatty foods(p<.001), and take worst lifestyle and have more subjective health problems than non drinker's group of Korean nursing students. Korean nursing students were more likely to perform bad health behaviors than Japanese nursing students. The drink habit is one of the biggest problems among the nursing student, and then we have to have the mobilizing for 'Change on Alcohol' in our universities. This conclusion should provide grounds for future studies of strategies for health promotion and of prevention measures for psychological ill-health of nursing students.

The mean score for nursing students' beliefs about KC was 87.4 out of 100, indicating relatively positive beliefs. The students who had both education and exposure to KC had higher scores for knowledge and more positive beliefs about KC compared to students with no experience or exposure to KC. There was a positive correlation between knowledge and beliefs about KC (r=.371, p<.001). Conclusion: The results suggest that there is a need to develop educational programs for nursing students in order to increase their knowledge and develop positive beliefs about KC.

  • This study is to understand and to explain how nursing students experience in the clinical nursing practice using grounded theory approach. Ten nursing students were participated in the study. Seven of them were junior students at the junior college of nursing, and the rest were the senior students at the university. The data were collected by in-depth individual interviews by investigators during May and June in 1995. The results of the study were as follows ; Twenty-eight concepts and 9 categories were emerged by the constant comparative analysis. The 9 categories include 'the need of role model', 'non-educational practical setting', 'knowledge deficit', 'emotional changes', 'the attitudes of clinical practice', 'fatigue', 'skepticism', 'pride', and 'the product of clinical practice'. The core category which encompasses all 9 categories was emerged as 'the process of formulating the nursing view'. Five hypotheses were derived from the analysis. 1) The desirable role model would enhance to pride of nursing in students. 2) Non-educational practical setting would increase skepticism of nursing in students. 3) Knowledge deficit would negatively affect on experience of clinical practice. 4) The pride of clinical practice would formulate a positive nursing view. 5) The skepticism of clinical practice would formulate a negative nursing view. The results of this study are to use as basic data for students attending clinical experience.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the differences between gender identity, gender equality, and self-esteem among nursing college students. Methods: The subjects were nursing college students who were selected from 4 different nursing colleges. We measured gender identity, gender equality, and self-esteem using verified measurement tools. Data were analyzed using descriptive and comparative statistical methods. Results: Gender equality among nursing college students showed a significant difference between male students and female students. Male students had higher gender equality scores than female students on all 4 types of gender equality. Conclusion: Male nursing college students that there are differences in gender equality, especially in the areas of education and employment. Based on these results, we suggest that future work should focus on developing a curriculum to increase awareness of gender equality among under graduate students, and thereby build an organizational culture of mutual respect for gender equality among clinical nurses.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the current status and needs in neonatal emergency training for nursing students in Korea and to obtain preliminary information to develop a simulation based educational program on neonatal emergency care for nursing students. Methods: Structured questionnaires were distributed to five hospitals and ten nursing schools during April and May, 2012. Data were collected from 59 nurses who worked in the nursery or Neonatal Intensive Care Units and 13 nursing educators who had specialized in pediatric nursing. Results: Most nurses (86.4%) reported that they had experienced an emergency situation with newborns. Most nursing educators (84.6%) claimed that more intensive training with newborns is needed for nursing students. In particular, training in neonatal resuscitation (72.2%), respiratory distress (59.7%), and neonatal seizures (18.1%) were highly recommended as simulation based training for nursing students. Conclusion: A significant need for neonatal emergency educational programs was found. More efforts should be made to provide nursing students with knowledge and skills for working with neonates. The findings of this survey will ultimately provide a basis for developing a simulation based educational program on neonatal emergency care for nursing students.

  • Purpose: The effects of learning styles and nursing professional attitude on the problem-solving ability among nursing students were explained. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed with 245 nursing students who completed self-report questionnaires between April 14 and May 7, 2014. Results: The dominant learning styles of the nursing students were assimilating (33.9%) and diverging (33.1%), with converging (11.4%) being the least dominant. Nursing professional attitude in the nursing students was high (mean 65 out of 80). Problem-solving ability in the nursing students was high (mean 159 out of 225), especially among seniors. The relationship between learning styles and problem-solving ability in nursing students was not statistically significant (F=2.44, p=.065), even though nursing students with converging learning style had higher problem-solving ability than nursing students with other learning styles. The problem-solving ability of nursing students was influenced by nursing professional attitude, being a senior and preference for discussion. These variables explained 16.9% of the variance in problem-solving ability. Nursing professional attitude with 12.3% was the most influential. Conclusion: The problem-solving ability of nursing students was more influenced by nursing professional attitude than by learning styles. Therefore, we suggest strategies to develop a positive nursing professional attitude that leads to promoting the problem-solving ability of nursing students.
