  • This study was a methodological research to develop computerized patient classification system. The subjects of this investigation were 435 inpatients except redundant data and outliers in P University Hospital from January 18, 2000 to January 24, 2000. The data was analyzed by discrimination analysis and adopted discriminant variables were 1) sum of frequency for the nursing activities, 2) the number of nursing activities that do not need to consider intensity of the activities, and 3) total hours of nursing activities that need to consider their intensities. Discriminant function developed by this study classified the patients into 4 groups; class I, 251 ; class II, 125 ; class III, 39 ; class IV, 20. The Hit ratio was 89.23. Based on this study, following suggestions can be made for the future research 1. Inclusive patient classification system, which includes more expanded direct nursing care factors, need to be developed and examined. 2. This developed classification system can be utilized to evaluate patient distribution and to estimate adequate numbers of nursing staffs in each nursing unit.

  • There have been many trials of clinical efficacy of multi component and single component treatments for irritable bowel syndrome(IBS). We reviewed effects of non phamacological treatments in the IBS. Though the efficacy of multi-component approaches was unclear, several results suggest that cognitive behavioral therapy was effective in improving gastrointestinal symptoms of IBS. As a single component, cognitive therapy and relaxation with or without biofeedback could improve the symptoms and psychological health of IBS patients. Yoga, meditation, self-help information and hypnotherapy could be applicable to IBS.

Methods: The guideline was revised in 22 steps based on the international standards. Results: The updated nursing practice guideline for pressure injury consisted of four domains and 494 recommendations. The numbers of recommendations in each domain was: 31 hospital policy, 64 assessment, 386 prevention and management, and 13 education. The recommended grade was 10.3% for A, 13.8% for B, and 75.9% for C. Of these, the major revision was done in 40 recommendations (8.1%). A total of 55 recommendations (11.0%) were newly added. 25 recommendations had minor revisions such as changes or additions for some words, and only one recommendation was deleted. Conclusion: The revised nursing practice guidelines for pressure injury are expected to serve as an evidence-based practice guideline for pressure injury in Korea. This guideline will provide healthcare providers, patients, and caregivers with information to help prevent and manage pressure injuries, leading to improving patient outcomes.

Method: 2000, 2004 learning objectives were analyzed with frequencies and percents. Results: There was an increase in the total number of learning objectives used in 2004(n=534) over 2000(n=527). In 2004 compared to 2000, there was an increase in learning objectives related to nursing process, need of oxygenation, need of nutrition, need of temperature regulation, need of activity and exercise, need of comfort, medication, preoperative care. According to Bloom's taxonomy, learning objectives established in 2004, mainly consisted of three domains, 35.5% for comprehension, 23.6% for synthesis, 20.4% for knowledge Changes in learning objectives established in 2004 compared to 2000 decreases in the comprehension domain and increases in the synthesis domain. Conclusion: The learning objectives established in 2004 showed remarkable change when compared to those established in 2000. But the learning objective domains in Bloom's taxonomy were distributed unevenly. For better learning objectives in Fundamentals of Nursing, constant revision will be needed.

Methods: A literature review was performed and the current status of genetic counselling in Korea was explored. Then the educational and clinical experiences of the authors were incorporated. Finally, the main activities of Korean nursing for genetics were identified. Results: Two types of genetic counsellor certification have been issued in Korea: one is issued by the Korean Society of Genetic Medicine, another by the Korean Society of Breast Cancer since June 2011. A few Korean nursing researchers have continuously performed research related to genetic nursing and undertook several research projects funded by the government since 2003. In February 2011, KSGN was established and is now trying to establish further international networks. Conclusion: Nursing genetic experts should be trained to integrate all specialties for genetic counselling, so they can provide holistic genetic services including ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI).

  • Purpose : Developing infection control capabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic was critical. This study aimed to develop a simulation program to control patients with COVID-19 in nursing students and examine the effects on COVID-19 knowledge, COVID-19 nursing intention, self-efficacy learning, and clinical performance. Methods : The study used nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Sixty nursing students were recruited from two different colleges using purposive sampling. For the intervention group(n=30), the pretest was administered before the simulation program, involving six sessions of online lectures and simulation practices. Immediately, the posttest was conducted following the program. Results : COVID-19 knowledge (t=9.87, p <.001), COVID-19 nursing intention (t=4.45, p <.001), learning self-efficacy (t=6.49, p <.001), and clinical performance (t=6.77, p <.001) increased significantly after the program, revealing the positive effect of the COVID-19 infection control simulation program in nursing students. Conclusion : The results of the study and the curriculum may be used as practical evidence for COVID-19 infection control in nursing schools and medical institutions.
