The thermodynamic properties of steam table are obtained by measurement or approximate calculation under appropriate assumptions. Therefore they are supposed to have basic measurement errors. And thermodynamic properties should be modeled through function approximation for using in numerical analysis. In order to make noised thermodynamic properties corresponding to measurement errors, random numbers are generated, adjusted to appropriate magnitudes and added to original thermodynamic properties. Both neural networks and quadratic spline interpolation method are introduced for function approximation of these modified thermodynamic properties in the saturated water based on pressure and temperature. In analysis spline interpolation method gives much less relative errors than neural networks at both ends of data. Excluding the both ends of data, the relative errors of neural networks is generally within ${\pm}0.2%$ and those of spline interpolation method within ${\pm}0.5$~1.5%. This means that the neural networks give smaller relative errors compared with quadratic spline interpolation method within range of use. From this fact it was confirmed that the neural networks trace the original values better than the quadratic interpolation method and neural networks are more appropriate method in modelling the saturated steam table.
Water flow into unsaturated soils is most often modeled by Richards equation consisting of the mass conservation law and Darcy's law. Three standard forms of Richards equation are presented as the head (${\Psi}$)-based form, the moisture content (${\theta}$) based form, and the mixed form. Numerical solutions of these partial differential equations with highly nonlinear terms can cause poor results along with significant mass balance errors. The numerical solution based on the mixed form of Richards equation is known that the mass is perfectly conserved without any additional computational efforts. The aim of this study is to develop fully implicit numerical scheme of Richards equation for one-dimensional vertical unsaturated flow in homogeneous soils using the finite difference approximation, and then to perform sensitivity analysis of infiltration to the variations in the unsaturated soil properties and to different soil types.
Shell-and-tube heat exchanger (STHX) is widely used by virtue of its simple structure and high reliability, especially in a space-constrained surface ship. For the STHX of the surface ship, roll, pitch and other motion of the ship will affect the heat transfer performance, resistance characteristics and structural strength of the heat exchanger. Therefore, it is urgent to carry out numerical simulation research on three-dimensional thermal hydraulic characteristics of surface ship STHX under the marine conditions. In this paper, the numerical simulation of marine shell and tube heat exchanger of surface ship was carried out using the porous media model. Firstly, the mathematical physical model and numerical method are validated based on the experimental data of a marine engine cooling water shell and tube heat exchanger. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The prediction errors of pressure drop and heat transfer are less than 10% and 1% respectively. The effect of marine conditions on the heat transfer characteristics of the heat exchanger is investigated by introducing the additional force model of marine condition to evaluate the effect of different motion parameters on the heat transfer performance of the heat exchanger. This study could provide a reference for the optimization of marine heat exchanger design.
It is desirable to use a monthly benchmarked construction indicator which contains the characteristics of statistical data in an annual survey in order to analyze the cyclical phenomenon of the construction activity. The benchmarked indicator is expected to improve the data quality in terms of accuracy, consistency, comparability, and completeness. In this paper, benchmarking methodologies of compiling monthly construction indicators arc researched by using a monthly prompt data holding short - term fluctuations and an annual survey data regarded as more accurate statistics than monthly data. The benchmarking is the methodology by which a high frequency data should he adjusted in order to hold the short-term and cyclical phenomena, and the long - term trend of two data groups with ensuring the consistency of an annual summation between a high frequency data and a low frequency data. This paper considered the numerical approach like pro rata distribution method, proportional Denton method, EFL or HP filter Benchmark - to - Indicator ratio method, and the model - based approach such as Chow and Lin method, $Fem{\acute{a}}ndez$ method. Also, the benchmarked construction indicators were estimated by early mentioned benchmarking methods with practical data, and these methods were empirically reviewed and compared. In case of construction indicators with severe seasonal fluctuations and irregulars, the numerical approach seemed to be performed more correctly than the model- based approach. Among numerical methods, the proportional Denton method used in general was a little nice. The HP filter Benchmark - to - Indicator ratio method may be considered with survey errors or measurement errors in an annual survey data.
The primary purpose of this study was to gather knowledge about $5^{th},\;6^{th},\;and\;7^{th}$ graders' proportional reasoning ability by investigating their reactions and use of strategies when encounting proportional or nonproportional problems, and then to raise issues concerning instructional methods related to proportion. A descriptive study through pencil-and-paper tests was conducted. The tests consisted of 12 questions, which included 8 proportional questions and 4 nonproportional questions. The following conclusions were drawn from the results obtained in this study. First, for a deeper understanding of the ratio, textbooks should treat numerical comparison problems and qualitative prediction and comparison problems together with missing-value problems. Second, when solving missing-value problems, students correctly answered direct-proportion questions but failed to correctly answer inverse-proportion questions. This result highlights the need for a more intensive curriculum to handle inverse-proportion. In particular, students need to experience inverse-relationships more often. Third, qualitative reasoning tends to be a more general norm than quantitative reasoning. Moreover, the former could be the cornerstone of proportional reasoning, and for this reason, qualitative reasoning should be emphasized before proportional reasoning. Forth, when dealing with nonproportional problems about 34% of students made proportional errors because they focused on numerical structure instead of comprehending the overall relationship. In order to overcome such errors, qualitative reasoning should be emphasized. Before solving proportional problems, students must be enriched by experiences that include dealing with direct and inverse proportion problems as well as nonproportional situational problems. This will result in the ability to accurately recognize a proportional situation.
The eigenvalue technique is introduced to overcome the problem of truncation errors caused by temporal discretization of numerical analysis. The eigenvalue technique is different from simulation in that only the space is discretized. The spatially discretized equation is diagonized and the linear dynamic system is then decoupled. The time integration can be done independently and continuously for any nodal point at any time. The results of eigenvalue technique are compared with the exact solution and FEM numerical solution. The eigenvalue technique is more efficient than the FEM to the computation time and the computer storage in the same conditions. This technique is applied to the solute transport analysis in nonuniform flow fields around underground storage caverns. This method can be very useful for time consuming simulations. So, a sensitivity analysis is carried out by using this method to analyze the safety of caverns from nearly located contaminant sources. According to the simulations, the reaching time from source to the nearest cavern may takes 50 years with longitudinal dispersivity of 50 m and transversal dispersivity of 5 m, respectively.

In the present study, the influences of the fire curtain and natural vent in a theater fire were investigated through the numerical simulation of a reduced-scale model of a theater fire using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). Based on a previous experimental study using the reduced-scale model, the 1/14 reduced-scale model and its conditions were constructed according to the law of similarity with a real-scale theater. Through a series of numerical simulations, the smoke movements were visualized, and the temperatures in the stage and auditorium, mass flow rate of the outflow through natural vent, and time at which smoke started moving toward the auditorium were measured and analyzed. The general trends on the effects of the fire curtain and natural vent during the theater fire predicted by the present numerical simulation were similar to the previous experimental results. For quantitative comparison of the present numerical simulation and previous experimental results, the mean percentage errors of temperatures in the stage and auditorium, and the mass flow rate of outflow through the natural vent were calculated. The present numerical simulation results showed good agreement with previous experimental results with reasonable accuracy.

In hot strip rolling, the work roll profile is one of the main factors in predicting and correcting the strip profile. Various studies concerning the wear profile and the thermal crown of work roll have been performed, and the results of these studies have shown that the work roll profile must be predicted accurately so as to efficiently control the strip qualities such as thickness, crown, flatness, and camber. Therefore, a precise prediction model of roll profile is called for in a perfect shape control system. In this paper, a genetic algorithm was applied to improve on the roll profile prediction model in hot strip rolling. In this approach, the optimal design problem is formulated on the basis of a numerical model so as to cover the diverse design variables and objective functions. A genetic algorithm was adopted for conducting design iteration for optimization to determine the coefficient of the numerical model for minimization of errors in the result of the calculated value and the measured data. A comparative analysis showed a satisfactory conformity between them..
Hot spots on thin wafers of IC packages are becoming important issues in thermal and electrical engineering fields. To investigate these hot spots, we developed a Diode Temperature Sensor Array (DTSA) that consists of an array of 32 ${\times}$32 diodes (1,024 diodes) in a 8 mm ${\times}$ 8 mm surface area. To know specifically the hot spot temperature which is affected by the chip thickness and a generated power, we made the DTSA chips, which have 21.5 ${\mu}m$, 31 ${\mu}m$, 42 ${\mu}m$, 100 ${\mu}m$, 200 ${\mu}m$, and 400 ${\mu}m$ thickness using the CMP process. And we conducted the experiment using various heater power conditions (0.2 W, 0.3 W, 0.4 W, 0.5 W). In order to validate experimental results, we performed a numerical simulation. Errors between experimental results and numerical data are less than 4%. Finally, we proposed a correlation for the hot spot temperature as a function of the generated power and the wafer thickness based on the results of the experiment. This correlation can give an easy estimate of the hot spot temperature for flip chip packaging when the wafer thickness and the generated power are given.

Most of weapon systems use aided navigation system which integrates inertial navigation and aiding sensors to compensate the INS errors increasing with the passage of time. Various aid sensors can be applied such as Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), radar, barometer, etc., but there might exist time delay caused by signal processing or transferring aid information. This time delay leads out-of-sequence measurements (OOSM) systems. Previously, optimal and suboptimal measurment update method for OOSM systems, where the time delay length are known, are proposed. However, previous algorithm does not guarantee the positive definite property of covariance matrix. In order to improve numerical stability for aided navigation using delayed-measurement, this paper proposes a new measurement covariance update algorithm be similar to Joseph-form in Kalman filter. Futhermore, we propose how to implement it in indirect feedback Kalman filter structure, which is commonly used in aided navigation systems, for time-delayed measurement systems. Simulation and vehicle test results show effectiveness of a proposed algorithm.
