  • In this paper, a research on the composition of the nesting algorithm fitness function is carried out by performing various numerical experiments to inspect how it affects the scrap efficiency, allocation characteristics, and time consumption, targeting the nesting results of ship parts. This paper specifically concentrates on a method to minimize the scrap ratio and efficiently use the well-defined remnants of a raw plate after the nesting process for the remnant nesting. Therefore, experiments for various ship parts are carried out with the weighting factor method, one of the multi-objective optimum design methods. Using various weighting factor sets, the nesting results are evaluated in accordance with the above purposes and compared with each set for each ship part groups. Consequently, it is suggested that the nesting algorithm fitness function should be constructed differently depending on the characteristics of the parts and the needs of the users.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of receiving voltage sensitivity about acoustic package in towed array sonar is analyzed through the numerical simulation and design of experiments. Simulation results show that the variation of receiving voltage sensitivity is caused by the structural resonance mode shape on baseline acoustic package. The effect of design parameters of the acoustic package are analyzed through the design of experiments to reduce the deviation of receiving voltage sensitivity. A change of hydrophone shield can thickness (t) is the greatest effect on the deviation of receiving voltage sensitivity. As a result of water tank test, the acoustic package derived from the design of experiments has reduced deviation of receiving voltage sensitivity.

  • Error analysis of finite difference equation on the Muskingum-Cunge flood routing method with free time and space weighting factor was carried out. The error analysis shows that the numerical solution of the Muskingum-Cunge method becomes diverged with time when the sum of time weighting factor and space weighting factor is greater than 1.0. Numerical diffusion increases when the sum of time weighting factor and space weighting factor decreases. Numerical diffusion and numerical oscillation increase when the grid resolution is coarse. Numerical experiments and field applications show that the Muskingum-Cunge method with free space weighting factor is more effective for simulating the flood routing with great peak diminution than conventional Muskingum-Cunge method with fixed space weighting factor, 0.5.

  • This study, regarding curved channel, was performed to compare and analyze hydraulic characteristics and the speed of water and water level for left bank and right bank through hydraulic model experiments and numerical analysis. Real channels that had characteristics of curved channel were selected as objectives. In order to easily operate one and two dimensional numerical analysis and comparison for total 2.4Km model channel, measuring point was set up as 200m. HEC-RAS model was applied as one dimensional numerical analysis program and SMS model was used as two dimensional numerical analysis program. In respect of speed of water, the average speed of water for right bank recorded 8.33m/s in a model experiment and 3.08m/s, 8.57m/s were average speed of water for right bank in one dimensional and two dimensional numerical analysis. The average speed of water of two dimensional numerical analysis was quite similar to that of model experiments. Also, as for water level, maximum observational errors between one and two dimensional numerical analysis for right and left bank of model experiments were 0.66m, 0.84m and 0.28m, 0.48m for each. It was found that two dimensional numerical analysis had a similar result to hydraulic model experiments. Accordingly, from the result of this study, two dimensional numerical analysis should be used rather than one dimensional numerical analysis, when numerical analysis for curved channel is conducted.

  • A novel methodology on the calculations of osmotic pressure and gradient diffusion coefficient has been provided ill the present study, by applying a succinct numerical analysis on the experimental results. Although both the osmotic pressure and the gradient diffusion coefficient represent a fundamental characteristic in related membrane filtrations such as microfiltration and ultrafiltration, neither theoretical analysis nor experiments can readily determine them. The osmotic pressure of colloidal suspension has been successfully determined from a relationship between the data of the time-dependent permeate flux, their numerical accumulations, and their numerical derivatives. It is obvious that the osmotic pressure is gradually increased, as the particle concentration increases. The thermodynamic coefficient was calculated from the numerical differentiation of the correlation equation of osmotic pressure, and the hydrodynamic coefficient was evaluated from the previously developed relation for an ordered system. Finally, the estimated gradient diffusion coefficient, which entirely depends on the particle concentration, was compared to the previous results obtained from the statistical mechanical simulations.

  • Behavior characteristics of coil shaped elastoplastic dampers, a sort of hysteretic damper, are studied on through experiments and numerical analyses. The coil shaped elastoplastic damper shows bilinear force-deformation relationship, and no stress concentration is occurred in the device. Numerical model, which is constructed through calibration with experimental results, shows good agreement with experiment, The coil shaped elastoplastic damper has lower yielding strength and stiffness under transversal loading compared to axial leading. Additional studies are required on behavior characteristics according to configuration variation of coil shaped elastoplastic dampers.

  • A numerical model which can analyze the flow and bed topography characteristics of a single bend and continuous one was suggested using the equations of mass, momentum, the vertical distribution of secondary flow, and the transverse bed slope. The calculated flow and bed topography characteristic values were compared with the experimental data in a single bend, and the predicted path of maximum streamwise velocity in continuous bends also compared with the Vadnal and Chang's data. The comparisons gave good results. A curved channel with 180 degrees was used. Sand and anthracite were selected as bed materials in the movable bed experiments. The model application of this model to the sand bed and the anthracite one accorded well with the observed values in the experiments. This model was proved to be useful for predicting the flow and bed topography with the change of bed materials. The results of this research could be used to construct and control curved channels as a fundamental information.mation.

  • This study was analyzed dynamically by finite element method about the results of experiments which the double cantilever beam specimens with two kinds of materials were applied by impact load. And they were compared with each other as the simulation data applied onto impact velocities of 6.4 and 18.47 m/s. The crack energy release rate, force and displacement of block were calculated numerically by computer. As the numerical simulation data of specimen analyzed in this study approached the experimental data, the inspection of this specimen model suggested in this paper could be reasonable for the numerical simulation.

  • An appropriate determination of time step is one of the important problems in atmospheric modeling. In this study, we investigate the sensitivity of numerical solutions to time step in a nonlinear atmospheric model. For this purpose, a simple nondimensional dynamical model is employed, and numerical experiments are performed with various time steps and nonlinearity factors. Results show that numerical solutions are not sensitive to time step when the nonlinearity factor is not influentially large and truncation error is negligible. On the other hand, when the nonlinearity factor is large (i.e., in a highly nonlinear regime), numerical solutions are found to be sensitive to time step. In this situation, smaller time step increases the intensity of the spatial filter, which makes small-scale phenomena weaken. This conflicts with the fact that smaller time step generally results in more accurate numerical solutions owing to reduced truncation error. This conflict is inevitable because the spatial filter is necessary to stabilize the numerical solutions of the nonlinear model.

  • In this study, numerical experiments were performed to decide the proper size off finite element for the analysis of harbor resonance problems. Various sizes of finite elements were considered from 1/3 to 1/60 of wavelength to model a fully opened rectangular harbor. Through the numerical results, the proper number of finite elements per wavelength were revealed to be nine within two percents errors allowed in resonant period and amplification ratio, while twelve within one percent error. It was fecund that error rates of resonant periods decrease linearly, while those of amplification ratio decrease with oscillating form as the size of an element decreases. The error of amplification ratio increases more rapidly than that of resonant period in case of element numbers below nine.
