A meta-analysis of microbiota implicated in peri-implantitis

  • Peri-implantitis is a disease affecting the tissue surrounding dental implants, destroying both soft and hard tissues. A total of 2,015 studies were collected by searching items in the National Library of Medicine, including keywords, such as "peri-implantitis," "microbiota," and "microbiome." Of them, 62 studies were screened and considered eligible for analysis. Only 16 studies qualified all criteria mentioned here: "Using PCR methods for microorganism detection," "Suggesting quantified results," "Stating obvious clinical diagnosis criteria ("Bleeding on probing," "Probing pocket depth," "Suppuration," and "Radiographic bone loss")." Only 8 studies were included in the meta-analysis because the others had special issues. Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Prevotella intermedia, and Epstein-Barr virus were the microbiological subjects of analysis. The odds ratio (OR) between the healthy implants and peri-implantitis were calculated for each microorganism to compare two groups, and the forest plots were suggested as the visual materials. P. gingivalis (1.392 < OR < 2.841), T. forsythia (1.345 < OR < 3.221), T. denticola (2.180 < OR < 5.150), A. actinomycetemcomitans (1.975 < OR < 6.456), P. intermedia (1.245 < OR < 3.612), and Epstein-Barr virus (1.995 < OR < 9.383). The species showed that their 95% confidence interval of odds ratio was higher than 1, indicating that they were detected more frequently in periimplantitis than in healthy implants. Meanwhile, other species, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum and Staphylococcus aureus, were not included in the meta-analysis because the number of studies was insufficient.

  • The purpose of this research was to analyze the residual water retention and to determine the number and species of microorganisms from the wet cotton fabrics in dehydration and drying process during washing. The drying rates of terrycloth and interlock knit under the rainy seasons were measured according to the dehydration and hanging methods, layers of fabric and pre-treatment agents. Microorganisms were isolated from the dried terrycloth by pure culture, and were identified by Biolog system. The results are as follow: The initial water retention of fabrics after dehydration decreased in the order of dripping>centrifuge>squeezing method, which affected the drying rate. The drying rates were faster by increasing surface area of fabrics. There was no significant difference in drying rate among the fabrics pre-treated with detergent, or fabric softener, or cationic surfactants such as Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB) and Benzalkonium chloride(BC). Puedomonas aureginosa was found in the fabrics treated with a powder-type detergent. On the other side, there was no growth of microorganism in the fabrics treated with a liquid-type detergent (containing antibacterial agent), CTAB and BC.

Microbial Contamination of the Food Materials for Manufacturing Korean Laver Roll (Kimbab) and the Effect of Gamma Irradiation

  • Microbial contamination of ready-to-eat ingredients for Kimbab manufacturing and the effect of irradiation to reduce the microbial contamination of the products were investigated. Among 9 food items tested, there were no viable cells in the ham, seasoned and cooked beef, imitation crab leg, fried egg, and seasoned burdoc. Cucumber, surimi gel, and seasoned and blanched spinach were counted at 5.07$\pm$0.97, 3.50$\pm$0.14, and 5.41$\pm$0.51 log CFU/g, respectively. Irradiation at 1 kGy reduced the number of microorganism in these ready-to-eat foods to an undetectable level. However, the dried laver showed an 8.83$\pm$0.10 log CFU/g and an irradiation at 3 kGy reduced the level to only 7.14$\pm$0.23. Sensory evaluation of the irradiated Kimbab prepared from these food materials indicated that the measure of the control of the sensorial quality should be provided before applying an irradiation to the prepared Kimbab.

  • This study was conducted to investigated the kimchi quality of the addition of green tea extract and green tea leaf. Kimchi was examined for pH, titratable acidity, the changes in the number of microorganism, color,sensory evaluation . The pH and titratable acidity of kimchi at the addition of 5%, 1% of green tea extract and green tea leaf were higher and lower than those of control kimchi. the number of total microoranism at 21 days. were detected much more in the kimchi added green tea extract and green tea leaf than in control. The number of coliforms up to 7 days of fermentation were detected. And those at 14-21 days were not detected but those of 28 days were detected. The number of coliforms at 28 days were most lowest in the kimchi added green tea extract 3%. The number of lactic acid bacteria were detected more in the kimchi added green tea leaf. As a result of sensory evaluation during fermentation, the kimchi added green tea extract 5% was the highest score in carbonated taste. texture and overall quality. As the result of correlation between sensory characteristics and mechanical characteristics, it was found that sensory characteristics of sour taste is negatively related to the mechanical characteristics of L value, while it is positively related to the texture. The a values is negatively related to the sensory characteristics of overall quality. The b values is positively related to the sensory characteristics of sour taste.

표고 톱밥재배용 신품종 '다담' 육성 (Breeding of a new cultivar 'Dadam' for Lentinula edodes sawdust cultivation)

  • 표고 톱밥재배용 다수성 품종 육성을 위해 수집균주 중 우량계통의 단포자 교배로 육성한 '다담'의 주요 특성은 다음과 같다. '다담'의 균사생장 적온은 19~22℃, 발이 및 생육온도는 13~20℃, 발생형은 산발형으로 대조품종 '화담'과 유사하였고, 형태는 평편형으로 평반구형인 '화담' 차이가 있었다. 또한, 자실체 갓색은 '화담' 보다 진하고, 갓두께는 얇고, 대길이는 긴 특성을 가졌다. '다담'의 총 재배기간은 135~139일로 '화담'의 138~142과 크게 차이 나지 않았다. '다담'의 3주기까지 수량은 621 g으로 '화담' 371 g 보다 67% 많았다. 주기별 수량 양상을 보면, '다담'과 '화담' 모두 3주기 수량의 80~83%를 2주기 동안 수확할 수 있었다. 특히, '다담'은 1주기 수량비중이 60%로 '화담' 52%보다 1주기에 수량이 집중되는 특성을 보였다. 농가실증시험 결과, '다담'은 농가재배 품종인 'L808' 보다 다소 갓크기는 작고 대길이가 길었고 재배기간과 수량은 큰 차이 없었다. '다담'의 발생한 자실체 개체는 1개 배지에 평균 15개로 'L808'의 47개에 비해 약 3배정도 적어 솎기에 투입되는 노동력을 절감하는 효과가 기대된다.

  • Inertial migration phenomena of phytoplankton in pipe flows were investigated using a digital holography technique. As the Reynolds number increases, the microorganisms suspended in a pipe flow are focused at a certain radial position which is called equilibrium position or pinch point. In this study, the effects of the size of microorganism and Reynolds number in the range of 1 < Re < 78 on the inertial migration were investigated and the results are compared with those for solid particles under similar experimental conditions. As a result, the equilibrium position for the elastic microorganisms is not so distinct, compared to the solid particles. This results from deformation of elastic body shape caused by shear-gradient of surrounding flow.

  • Normal Albino rats were received glycerin via subcutaneously and Staphylococcus aureus intravenously. The microorganism was coagulase-positive and non-hemolytic. The rats received glycerin alone showed an acute tubular nephrosis, and the others such as glycer in induced nephrotic rats showed a number of different findings: At the first hours of the bacterial injection, in medulla, the bacterial clumps and inflammatory cell infiltration, and microabscesses with retrogressive changes of proximal convoluted tubulles were observed. The suppurative inflammation was observed in days. Five weeks after the initial innoulation of the organism kidney was shown restoration to a histologically normal cortex. The proliferation of fibrous connective tissue and small numbers of chronic inflammatory cells were observed in the medulla where an acute inflammatory process was enhanced presumably. On the other hand, the Albino rats administered Staphyloceccus aureus alone resulted in n moderate degree of vacuolization in proximal convoluted tubules and a number of casts in the early stage. No, bacterial clumps and microabscesses were observed in the rats.

무균 돈사 환경 모니터링을 위한 대기 중 미생물 탐지기법 확립 (Optimization of monitoring methods for air-borne bacteria in the environmental conditions of pig facilities)

  • Experimental animals have been used to biological and medical purposes and the animals must be, for these purposes, healthy and clean to microbial infection. However, the animals can be easily exposed to pathogenic microorganism via several routes. Of the routes, environmental conditions are the most important factors to keep the animals healthy and clean, especially air condition. Monitoring of air-condition has been required to keep the animal healthy and clean. However, any guideline is not available for experimental conditions with pigs. Therefore, the sampling times and points were compared in different conditions to establish an optimal protocol for monitoring of air borne bacteria. Tryptic soy agar(TSA), blood agar containing 5% defibrinated sheep blood and Sabraud dextrose agar(SDA) were used as media to capture total bacteria, pathogenic bacteria and fungi, respectively. Two methods, compulsive capture using an air-sampler and capturing fall-down bacteria were used to capture the microorganisms in the air. The points and time of capturing were different at each experiment. Air borne microorganisms were captured at three and five points in the open and closed equipments, respectively. Air was collected using an air-sampler for 1 min and 5 min and the agar plates as open status were left from 30 min to 2hr. At first, we monitored an experimental laboratory which dealt with several pathogenic bacteria and then, a protocol obtained from the investigation was applied to open or close experimental conditions with pigs. Number of bacteria was high from 10:00 to 15:00, especially on 13:30-15:30 but sharply decreased after 17:00. The tendency of the number of bacteria was similar between two methods even though the absolute number was higher with air sampler. Critical difference in the number of cells was observed at 5 min with air sampler and 2 hr with fall-down capturing method. However, 1 min with air sampler and 1 hr with fall-down capturing were the best condition to identify bacterial species collected from the air. Number of bacteria were different depending on the sampling points in closed condition but not in opened condition. Based on our results, a guide-line was suggested for screening air-borne microorganism in the experimental conditions with pigs.

석고 모형으로부터 분리 배양된 미생물에 관한 연구 (A study on isolated microorganisms from dental cast)

  • Purpose: This study was examined the characteristics of bacteria isolated from the dental stone that is made ??in the dental laboratory. Methods: 104 dental stones samples were collected from the 4 dental laboratory. Characteristics of bacteria were investigated by microorganism isolation culture method using a Blood Tryptic Soy Agar(TSA) medium. Results: The detected various bacteria was confirmed as pathogenic bacteria, non-pathogenic bacteria and natural bacteria. The isolated bacterial number was confirmed $2.9{\times}10^3CFU$ and maxium bacterial number of $3.0{\times}10^4CFU$. Conclusion: Therefore, infection prevention education is required, it must be to live up the hand-washing and wear protective clothing to protect themselves when working in a dental laboratory.

강진 무위사 성보박물관 전시실의 미생물 서식환경 특성 연구 (The Characteristic Study of the Microbial Habitat in the Muwisa Museum, Gangjin)

  • 문화재를 보존, 보관, 전시하는 박물관의 전시실은 실내 공기에 부유하고 있는 먼지와 곰팡이로 인해 생물적 피해를 받는다. 미생물의 발생은 문화재 표면의 착색, 재질 분해, 변질 등의 손상을 야기한다. 본 연구에서는 무위사 성보박물관의 전시실, 전시진열장, 그리고 벽화 표면의 미생물 분포 상태와 온습도 분포 특성을 조사하였다. 전시실과 진열장에서 포집된 미생물을 동정한 결과, Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp., Cladosporium sp. 등 다양한 미생물이 동정되었다. 특히 1, 3 전시실은 2 전시실에 비해 미생물의 개체 수가 많은 것을 알 수 있었다. 3개 전시실 모두 온 습도 분포도를 살펴본 결과, 대부분이 $28{\pm}4^{\circ}C$의 높은 온도 분포와 70~80% 사이의 고습도 환경에서 높은 분포율을 나타냈다. 각 전시실의 진열장을 비교한 결과, 1 전시실의 진열장이 2, 3 전시실의 진열장에 비해 높은 습도환경 분포율을 보였는데, 이는 미생물 농도 분포와 상관성이 있는 것으로 판단되었다. 이와 같은 무위사 성보박물관 전시실 및 진열장 내부의 고온, 고습 환경의 분포는 근본적으로 전시실의 밀폐도와 환경관리 등에 의해 발생되는 특성임이 확인되었다.
