In this paper a new technique of inverse fairing problem for ship hull is proposed. Recently Lu solved the inverse fairing problem for automobile's body that was made by one surface element. In this system however hull surface is constructed by Gregory's composite surface interpolation method. So reflection line at boundary position is used as a tool of solving inverse problem in surface fairing. But the results are not good. The new concepts of Normal vector line and Constrained reflection line are introduced as an alternative tool. Energy minimization method for Normal Vector Line curve net and the inverse method for Constrained Reflection Line by using optimization technique are examined And the final lines from this proposed surface fairing method shows good fairness.

In this paper, the vibration characteristics of a linear stepping motor(LSM) are analyzed using the ACSL. A magnetic equivalent circuit is based on the structure of the LSM, and then the electric equivalent circuit of the LSM is derived by solving equations for the magnetic equivalent circuit. A normal force is calculated using finite element method(FEM). And the vibration characteristics(continuous vibration) of the LSM are simulated by the ACSL(Advanced Continuous Simulation language) with the voltage equations, the thrust equation, the normal force equation and the kinetic equation.

The study is concerned with the theoretical and experimental investigation of the elliptical bulge test. The elliptical bulge test is analyzed by using a rigid-plastic finite element method incorporating large deformation and normal anisotropy. Thin elliptical diaphragms of mild steel are bulged for three aspect ratios. The contact problem the die round and the sheet is successfully solved by using a skew boundary condition. It is shown that the proper consideration of die radius and normal anisotropy is very significant. The relation between bulging pressure and deformation is obtained. It has been found that the pole is nearly under proportional straining during deformation. The instability criterion by maximum load condition enables the effective prediction of instability pressure. The computional results are in good agreement with experimental results and to be very useful for a better understanding of the elliptical bulge test.

In Korea, the next generation high-speed train, whose target is maximum speed of 400km/h and operating speed of 370km/h, has been developed since 2007. In this paper, the safety of the next generation high-speed train is compared UIC 518OR under the malfunctioning situation of the suspension system. The bogie of the next generation high-speed train has two suspensions. Two different vehicle models of the next generation high-speed train are created by using VAMPIRE and ADAMS/Rail, which are specialized to design railway vehicle. And Those models are showed same dynamic properties. First of all, the sensitivity analysis of ModelCenter is performed using model of VAMPIRE. One suspension element which has significant effects on the safety are selected by result of the sensitivity analysis. And then, the dynamic analysis when the suspension element is broken is performed using ADAMS/Rail. The 30km track between Pungsegyo and Biryong tunnel in Gyeongbu High-speed Line was used at the dynamic analysis. The estimated value is found by using the normal method of UIC 518OR. The estimated values on the normal/fault state and the limit values of UIC 518OR are compared. Finally, the safety of the next generation high-speed train is verified.

The research of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) for reduction of the fault current is actively underway in the worldwide. In this paper, we analyzed the characteristics of a SFCL using the transformer and superconducting elements combined mutually in accordance with the fault types. The structure of this SFCL was composed of the secondary and third windings of a transformer connected to the load and the superconducting element, respectively. The provided electric power flew into the load connected to the secondary winding of the transformer in normal state. On the other hand, when the fault occurred in power system, the fault current was limited by closing the line of third winding of the transformer. At this time, the effect of the fault was minimized by opening the fault line in secondary winding of a transformer in power system. The sensing of the fault state was performed by the current transformer(CT) and then turn-on and turn-off switching behavior of the secondary line in the transformer was performed by the silicon-controlled rectifier(SCR). As a result, the proposed SFCL limited the fault current within one-cycle efficiently. Also, the degradation of the superconducting element in the normal state was avoided.

In the recently, the necessity of the hybrid type linear stepping motor(HLSM) of linear motion digital actuator has been increased in the various fields of the automatic control system. The HLSM is directly performed without any converting mechanism. Therefore, the HLSM is better advantaged in the efficiency and economical view than a rotary stepping motor. In this paper, we have designed an optimum tooth shape by the 2D finite element method(FEM) to develop the HLSM with longitudinal flux machine(LFM) type, and calculated the thrust force and normal force. And we have manufactured the prototype of it, and have experimented the thrust force characteristics of it.

To investigate the degeneration process in the intervertebral disc, a three dimensional (3D) poroelastic finite-element (FE) model was developed. Disc was modeled as two different regions, such as annulus modeled with fiber reinforced 20 node poroelastic ground matrix and nucleus having large porosity. Excess Von Mises stress in the disc element assumed to be a possible source of degeneration under compressive loading condition. Recursive calculation was continued until the desired convergence was attained by changing the permeability and porosity of those elements, which could be predicted from the previous iteration. The degenerated disc model showed that relatively small compressive stresses were generated in the nucleus elements compared to normal disc. Its distribution along the sagittal plane was matched well with a previously reported experimental result. Contrasts to this result, pore pressures in the nucleus were higher than those in the normal disc. Total stress indicated similar values for two different models. This new approach using poroelastic modeling could provide the explanation of the interaction between fluid and solid matrix in the disc during the degeneration process.
In this paper, an improved mathematical model is presented for the bending analysis of doubly curved functionally graded material (FGM) sandwich rhombic conoids. The mathematical model includes expansion of Taylor's series up to the third degree in thickness coordinate and normal curvatures in in-plane displacement fields. The condition of zero-transverse shear strain at upper and lower surface of rhombic conoids is implemented in the present model. The newly introduced feature in the present mathematical model is the simultaneous inclusion of normal curvatures in deformation field and twist curvature in strain-displacement equations. This unique introduction permits the new 2D mathematical model to solve problems of moderately thick and deep doubly curved FGM sandwich rhombic conoids. The distinguishing feature of present shell from the other shells is that maximum transverse deflection does not occur at its center. The proposed new mathematical model is implemented in finite element code written in FORTRAN. The obtained numerical results are compared with the results available in the literature. Once validated, the current model was employed to solve numerous bending problems by varying different parameters like volume fraction indices, skew angles, boundary conditions, thickness scheme, and several geometric parameters.

This paper presents fracture mechanics analysis results for various cracks located at pressurized water reactor pressure vessel nozzle crotch corners taking into consideration constraint effect. Technical documents such as the ASME B&PV Code, Sec.XI were reviewed and then a fracture mechanics analysis procedure was proposed for structural integrity assessment of various nozzle crotch corner cracks under normal operation conditions considering the constraint effect. Linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis was performed by conducting finite element analysis with the proposed analysis procedure. Based on the evaluation results, elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analysis taking into account the constraint effect was performed only for the axial surface crack of the reactor pressure vessel outlet nozzle with cladding. The fracture mechanics analysis result shows that only the axial surface crack in the reactor pressure vessel outlet nozzle has the stress intensity factor exceeding the low bound of upper-shelf fracture toughness irrespectively of considering the constraint effect. It is confirmed that the J-integral for the axial crack of the outlet nozzle does not exceed the ductile crack initiation toughness. Hence, it can be ensured that the structural integrity of all the cracks is maintained during the normal operation.
This article assesses and estimates the progressive failure mechanism of complex pit-rest secondary toppling of slopes that are located within the vicinity of the Gas Flare Site of Refinery No. 4 in South Pars Special Zone (SPSZ), southwest Iran. The finite element numerical procedure based on the Shear Strength Reduction (SSR) technique has been employed for the stability analysis. In this regard, several step modelling stages that were conducted to evaluate the slope stability status revealed that the main instability was situated on the left-hand side (western) slope in the Flare Site. The toppling was related to the rock column-overburden system in relation to the overburden pressure on the rock columns which led to the progressive instability of the slope. This load transfer from the overburden has most probably led to the separation of the rock column and to its rotation downstream of the slope in the form of a complex pit-rest secondary toppling. According to the numerical modelling, it was determined that the Strength Reduction Factor (SRF) decreased substantially from 5.68 to less than 0.320 upon progressive failure. The estimated shear and normal stresses in the block columns ranged from 1.74 MPa to 8.46 MPa, and from 1.47 MPa to 16.8 MPa, respectively. In addition, the normal and shear displacements in the block columns ranged from 0.00609 m to 0.173 m and from 0.0109 m to 0.793 m, respectively.
