Film boiling may lead to burnout of the heating element. Even though burnout does not occur, the heating element is subject to deformation because it is not sufficiently strong to withstand external loads. In particular, the ballooning and rupture of a tube under film boiling are important phenomena in the field of nuclear reactor safety. If the tube-type cladding of nuclear fuel ruptures owing to high internal pressure and thermal load, radioactive materials inside the cladding are released to the coolant. Therefore, predicting the ballooning and rupture is important. This study presents numerical simulations to predict the ballooning behavior and rupture time of a horizontal tube at high internal pressure under saturated film boiling. To do so, a multi-step coupled simulation of conjugated film boiling heat transfer and ballooning using creep model is adopted. The numerical methods and models are validated against experimental values. Two different nonuniform heat flux distributions and four different internal pressures are considered. The three-step simulation is enough to obtain a convergent result. However, the single-step simulation also successfully predicts the rupture time. This is because the film boiling heat transfer characteristics are slightly affected by the tube geometry related to creep ballooning.

In high field (> 3 T) MR imaging, the magnetic field inhomogeneity in the target object increases due to the nonuniform electro-magnetic characteristics of the relatively high RF frequency. Especially in the body imaging, the effect causes more serious problems resulting in locally high SAR(Specific Absorption Ratio). In this paper, we propose an optimized parallel-transmission RF coil and show the utility of the coil by FDTD simulations to overcome the unwanted effects. Three types of TX coil elements are tested to maximize the efficiency and their driving patterns(amplitude and phase) optimized to have adequate field homogeneity, proper SAR level, and sufficient field strength. For the proposed coil element of $25cm{\times}8cm$ loop structure with 12 channels for a 3.0 T body coil, the field non-uniformity of more than 70% without optimization was reduced to about 26 % after the optimization of driving patterns. The experimental as well as simulation results show that the proposed parallel driving scheme is clinically useful for (ultra) high field MRI.
Monolayer graphene grown via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is recognized as a promising material for sensor applications owing to its extremely large surface-to-volume ratio and outstanding electrical properties, as well as the fact that it can be easily transferred onto arbitrary substrates on a large-scale. However, the Dirac voltage of CVD-graphene devices fabricated with transferred graphene layers typically exhibit positive shifts arising from transfer and photolithography residues on the graphene surface. Furthermore, the Dirac voltage is dependent on the channel lengths because of the effect of metal-graphene contacts. Thus, large and nonuniform Dirac voltage of the transferred graphene is a critical issue in the fabrication of graphene-based sensor devices. In this work, we propose a fabrication process for graphene field-effect transistors with Dirac voltages close to zero. A vacuum annealing process at $300^{\circ}C$ was performed to eliminate the positive shift and channel-length-dependence of the Dirac voltage. In addition, the annealing process improved the carrier mobility of electrons and holes significantly by removing the residues on the graphene layer and reducing the effect of metal-graphene contacts. Uniform and close to zero Dirac voltage is crucial for the uniformity and low-power/voltage operation for sensor applications. Thus, the current study is expected to contribute significantly to the development of graphene-based practical sensor devices.

This paper presents experimental results relating to the preliminary breakdown characteristics in $SF_6/CO_2$ gas mixtures under a highly non-uniform electric field. The impulse pre-breakdown developments are investigated by the measurements of corona current and light emission images. As a result, the preliminary breakdown development mechanisms for both the positive and negative polarities were fundamentally same. The first streamer corona was initiated at the tip of needle electrode, and the leaders developed with a stepwise propagation and bridged the test gap. The pause time of leader pulses in the positive polarity was significantly shorter than that in the negative polarity. Also, the time interval between the first streamer corona onset and breakdown in the negative polarity was much longer than that in the positive polarity. The discharge channel path in the positive polarity was zigzag, and the leader channel in the negative polarity was thicker and brighter than that in the positive polarity.
In computing the optical flow, Horn and Schunck's method which is a representative algorithm is based on differentiation. Therefore it is difficult to estimate the velocity for a large displacement by this algorithm. In this paper, we propose a method for estimating nonuniform motion from sequential images which is based on integral brightness constancy constraints. The equations which transform a source image to a target image are expressed as a function of the displacement field. If marginal effects can be neglected, the form of the transformation integral transform or orthogonal expansion can be determined from the expansion coefficients of the two images. The apparent displacement field is then computed iteratively by a projection method which utilities the functional derivatives of the linearized moment equations. We demonstrate that the performance of the orthogonal function transform on the data set of large motion.
A fractional step finite difference model for the longitudinal dispersion of nonconservative contaminants is developed. It is based on splitting the longitudinal dispersion equation into a set of three equations each to be solved over a one-third time step. The fourth-order Holly-Preissmann scheme, an analytic solution, and the Crank-Nicholson scheme are used to solve the equations for the pure advection, the first-order decay, and the diffusion, respectively. To test the model, it is applied to simulate the longitudinal dispersion of continuous source released into a nonuniform flow field as well as the dispersion of an instantaneous source in a uniform flow field. The results are compared with the exact solution and those computed by an existing model. Compared to the existing model which uses Euler method for the first-order decay equation, the present model yield more accurate results as the decay coefficient increases.

Purpose : The aim of this study is to investigate the properties of small field size and to measure the penumbra and central axis depth dose varying to the jaw setting and off axis distance for indicate this data to small field sizes radiation therapy. Material and methods : The percentage depth dose, beam profile and central axis output dose was measured by farmer type ion chamber and pinpoint chamber using Primart linac with 6MV energy. Beam quality and penumbra variations according to the central axis shift, from center to every 2cm outside increment, and field size, from $1{\times}1cm$ to $10{\times}10cm$ was investigated and compared with that of the standard geometrical condition's results Results : The differences of measured values between two ion chamber was about $37\%$ at 10cm depth with $1{\times}1cm$ field sizes but as field size increased this differences was diminished gradually. Measured data from various off axis distance with the different asymmetric collimations are not changed significantly but as size decreased the dose variation was increased and at $1{\times}1cm$ field size dose difference among off axis distance was as much as $13\%$, and as shallower the measured depth the central axis dose variations among the OAD was increased, penumbra was not changed noticeably depending on off axis distance but the percentage of penumbra from its initial field sizes was strongly dependant on field sizes and penumbra occupation rates of its own field sizes ranging from $6\%$ at $10{\times}10cm$ to $50\%$ at $1{\times}1cm$ field size. Conclusion : For imrt treatment, there are several numbers of different gentry angles with beams of nonuniform fluences are required and several complex factors involved. Among them the characteristics of beam output varying to the geometrical setting and design of collimators are of important to attaining a good treatment results. As mentioned in results the differences of measured values are changed significantly depends on ion chamber volume, depths and field size. For providing quality radiation treatment, especially at small field size, those factor's should have considering deliberately.
The terrain features and surface characteristics are the most important elements not only in meteorological modeling but also in air quality modeling. The diurnal evolution of local climate over complex terrain may be significantly controlled by the ground irregularities. Such topographic features can affect a thermally driven flow, either directly by causing changes in the wind direction or indirectly, by inducing significant variations in the ground temperature. Over a complex terrain, these variations are due to the nonuniform distribution of solar radiation, which is highly determined by the ground geometrical characteristics, i.e. slope and orientation. Therefore, the accuracy of prediction of regional scale circulation is strong associated with the accuracy of land-use and topographic information in meso-scale circulation assessment. The objective of this work is a numerical simulation using MM5-A2C model with the detailed topography and land-use information as the surface boundary conditions of the air flow field in mountain regions. Meteorological conditions estimated by MM5-A2C command a great influence on the dispersion of mountain areas with the reasonable feature of topography where there is an important difference in orographic forcing.
In order to monitor in situ electrochemical reaction we prepared the gold microshells on silica microspheres of $2{\mu}m$ in diameter which were able to not only work as electrodes but also surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active substrates. Previously reported gold microshell using polystyrene as core material have a few serious problems, mostly coming from solubility in organic solvent, nonuniform distribution in size and toxicity of the polystyrene. Here we prepared silica core-gold microshell to obtain a strong SERS active platform benefitting from the physicochemical stability, uniformity and non-toxicity of silica. Varying the concentration of 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES), the surfaces of silica beads were modified and the optimal condition was determined to be 1% APTES that made the SERS activity of gold microshell strongest. The gold microshells as made were characterized by homemade Micro-Raman system spectrometer, Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscope.
The conventional numerical models to analyze flow in subsurface porous media under the transient state usually generate numerical oscillation and unstability due to local flux domain for critical cases such as infiltration into initially dry soil during rainfall period. In this case, it is required refined mesh and small time step, but it decrease efficiency of computation. In this study, numerical unstability in discontinuity domain is removed by applying particle tracking algorithm to simulate unsteady subsurface flow with inflow boundary condition. Finally the hybrid LE FEM improving numerical stability is proposed. The hypothetical domains with unsteady uniform and nonuniform flow field were used to demonstrated algorithm verification. In comparison with analytic solution, we obtained reasonable results and conducted simulation of hypothetical 3-D recharge/pumping area. The proposed algorithm can simulate saturated/unsaturated porous media with more practical problems and will greatly contribute to accuracy and stability of numerical computation.
