  • Wavelets are localized in space and in frequency. This localization properties result from the multiresolution analysis of wavelets. The wavelet transform can be used to detect singularity of dynamic systems after the signal is de-noised. We applied the wavelet transform decomposition and do-noising procedures to the Hanaro dynamics consisting of 39 nonlinear differential equation plus Gaussian noise. The numerical tests demonstrate that the wavelet transform de-noising is effective for detection of the abrupt reactivity change and computationally efficient. Thus this wavelet theory could be profitably utilized in a real-time system for automatic event recognition (e.g., reactor condition monitoring).

  • This paper reports a new analytical method to calculate the planar displacement of structures. The cross-sections were assumed to remain in plane and the deflection curve was evaluated using the curvature values geometrically, despite being solved with differential equations. The deflection curve was parameterized with the arc-length of the curvature values, and was taken as an assembly of chains of circular arcs. Fast and accurate solutions of complex deflections can be obtained easily. This paper includes a comparison of the nonlinear displacements of an elastic tapered cantilever beam with a uniform moment distribution among the proposed analytical method, numerical method of the theory and large deflection FEM solutions.

  • A numerical scheme is proposed to control the BBMB (Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers) equation, and the scheme consists of three steps. Firstly, BBMB equation is converted to a finite set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations by the quadratic B-spline finite element method in spatial. Secondly, the controller is designed based on the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) theory; Finally, the system of the closed loop compensator obtained on the basis of the previous two steps is solved by the backward Euler method. The controlled numerical solutions are obtained for various values of parameters and different initial conditions. Numerical simulations show that the scheme is efficient and feasible.

  • This paper treats with the sub-optimal control problem of noninear systems by approximation method. This method involves the approximation by linearization which provides the sub-optimal solution of non-linear control problems. The result of this work shows that, in the problem in which the controlled plant is characterized by an ordinary differential equation of first order, the solution obtained by this method coincides with the exact solution of problem. In of case of the second or higher order systems, it is proved analytically that this method of linearization produces the sub-optimal solution of the given problem. It is also shown that the sub-optimality of solution by the method can be evaluated by introducing the upper and lower bounded performance indices. Discussion is made on the procedure with some illustrative examples whose performance indices are given in the quadratic forms.

  • A new set of governing equations is derived for the dynamic analysis of the Free-Piston Stirling Engines(EPSE). Equations from the ideal adiabatic model for the thermodynamic analysis of the working fluid are incoporated with the equations of motion for the moving masses of the system, resulting in a set of nonlinear differential equations. The coupled set of equations are numerically integrated with proper intial conditions to obtain a steady state response of the engine. The proposed method is compared with the conventional method of analyzing EPSE based mainly on the ideal isothermal model. The results clearly shows the limitationsl of the conventional methods and the relative advantages of the method proposed in the present study.

  • Buckling-Restrained Braces (BRBs) have been widely applied to tall buildings in seismic areas in the world. In this paper the author summarizes representative types of BRB compositions and shows two cases of special applications of BRBs. In the first case, BRB diagonals for tall building were used to provide stable cyclic nonlinear hysteresis and also used to limit forces generated at columns, connections and walls. The top outriggers are pre-loaded by jacks to resolve long-term differential shortenings between the concrete core wall and concrete-filled steel box columns. The second case is the retrofit work for a communication tower by replacing the insufficiently strong members with BRBs in Japan.

  • The effect of heat conduction resistance on laminar film condensation of the pure saturated vapor in forced flow over a flat plate has been investigated as boundary layer solutions. A efficient numerical methods for water are proposed for its solution. The momentum and energy balance equations are reduced to a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations with four parameters: the Prandtl number, Pr, Modified Jacob number, $Ja^{\ast}/Pr$, defined by an overall temperature difference, a property ratio $\sqrt{P_l{\mu}_l/P_v{\mu}_v}$ and the conjugate parameter ${\zeta}$. The similarity and simplified solutions obtained reveal the effects of the conjugate parameter.

  • Distance relays need accurate current and voltage for determining the trip ignition. Therefore we must analyze nonlinear phenomena which cause distortion in signals first of all. This paper presents the effect of some distortion(arcing fault and current transformer saturation) in power system. The saturation of a current transformer distorts input current of a distance relay and arcing faults make current and voltage to be changed. This paper describes modeling methods of a current transformer and arcing faults, and describes the simulation result of two distance relay algorithms (discrete fourier transform and modified differential equation methods)

  • In this study, the dynamic characteristics of the spool type counter balance valve are studied. The nonlinear governing differential eguations are derived. Routh-Hurwitz criterion is used to characterize the linearized eguations. Static and dynamic experiments are carried out for the determination of parameters that are necessary for the analysis and the stability of the system.

  • In this paper, a visco-hysteretic vibration absorber (VA) is proposed to increase the flutter speed of an airfoil and enhance damping in the pre- and post-flutter regimes. The passive system consists of a parallel arrangement of a dashpot and a rateindependent hysteretic element, represented by the Bouc-Wen differential model. The equations of motion are obtained and various tools of linear and nonlinear dynamics are employed to study the effects of the visco-hysteretic VA in the pre- and postflutter ranges.
