  • The shear strength is an important factor in the design of prestressed concrete beams. Therefore, researchers have utilized various methods to determine the shear strength of these elements for the design purposes. To evaluate some of the proposed theoretical methods, numerous models of post-tensioned beams with or without vertical prestressing are selected and analyzed using the finite element method and assuming nonlinear behavior for the materials. In this regard the validity of modeling is evaluated based on some tests results. In the second part of the study two beam specimens are built and tested and their load-deformation curve and cracking pattern are studied. The analytical results consist of compressive strut slope and mid span load deflection are compared with some experimental results, and the results of some codes' formulas. Finally comparing the results of nonlinear analysis with the experimental values, a new formula is proposed for determining strut slopes in prestressed concrete beams.

  • Seakeeping analysis has progressed from the linear frequency-domain 2D strip method to the nonlinear timedomain 3D panel method. Nevertheless, the violent free surface flows such as slamming and green water on deck are beyond the scope of traditional panel methods based on potential theory. Recently, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has become an attractive numerical tool that can effectively deal with the violent free surface flows. ABS, as a classification society, is putting forth a significant amount of effort to implement the CFD technology to the advanced strength assessment of modern commercial ships and high-speed naval craft. The main objective of this study is to validate the CFD technology as a seakeeping tool for ship design considering fully nonlinear three-dimensional slamming and green water on deck. The structural loads on a large container carrier were successfully calculated from the CFD analysis and validated with segmented model test measurements.

  • The characteristics of harmonic phase angles and phase angle differences contained in earthquake ground motions such as El Centre 1940 NS, Taft1 1952 NS, Hachinohe 1968 NS and Mexico 1985 are figured, which have been mostly overlooked in contrast with the importance placed on harmonic amplitudes. Recently, performance based design method is used for seismic design and seismic retrofitting, which needs nonlinear response analysis, there must be earthquake ground accelerations which contain the phase angle and the phase angle difference characteristics of the zone considered to be constructed building structures. To make clear the importance of phase angle differences, 4-earthquake ground motions are normalized by 200 gal and nonlinear response characteristics of normalized 4-earthquake ground motions are compared.

  • In this paper is presenting the shape design and elastomer bearings, which functioned as a joint connecting sub-structures and upper-structures with a railway bridge bearing systems. The elastomeric spherical bearing shaped and composed of alternated 17-layered metal shim plates and 18-layered elastomer plates, respectively. The elastomeric spherical bearing a high compressive load for perpendicular axis to layered plates and flexible motions are provided coincidently for other axes. The three types of elastomers, which were developed due to a designed shear modules were applied. Nonlinear analysis based on the material properties of designed bearing were accomplished. Therefore, the Nonlinear Analysis results were compared with the calculation results and the optimized shapes were designed.

  • Recently, floating cranes are mainly used to erect heavy blocks or cargos for constructing ships in many shipyards. It is important to estimate the dynamic motion of the heavy cargo suspended by a floating crane and the tension of the wire ropes between the floating crane and the heavy cargo. In this paper, the coupled dynamic equations of motion are set up for considering the 6 degree-of-freedom floating crane and the 6-degrees-of-freedom heavy cargo based on multibody system dynamics. Depending on the cargo weight, the motion of the floating crane would be changed to nonlinear state. The nonlinear terms in the equation of motion are considered. In addition, the nonlinear hydrostatic force, the linear hydrodynamic force, wire rope force, mooring force and gravity force are considered as the external forces. As the result of this paper, we analyze the engineering effect for erecting the heavy cargo by using the floating crane.

  • In adaptive fuzzy control, fuzzy systems are used to approximate the unknown plant nonlinearities. Until now, most of the papers in the field of controller design for nonlinear system using fuzzy systems considers the affine system with fixed grid-rule structure. This paper considers general nonlinear systems and dynamic fuzzy rule structure. Adaptive laws for fuzzy parameters and fuzzy rule structrue are established so that the whole system is stable in the sense of Lyapunov.

  • This paper presents a design method of the Interpolation-based adaptive LQ controller that is accomplished by getting the final controller interpolated with each gain of sub-LQ controllers. The Lagrange interpolation method is used in the scheme. The proposed controller is useful to control nonlinear systems which are especially changed the system parameters. The design method is illustrated by an application to the stabilization and tracking problems of an inverted pole system on a cart. Several cases of simulations are carried out in order to validate the control effectiveness and robustness. The simulation results are compared with those of LQ controller and prove the better control performance than LQ controller.

  • This paper presents the output feedback control design for feedforward nonlinear systems with input and output delay. The proposed output feedback controller is composed of a linear observer and a linear controller. It is shown that by using Lyapunov-Krasovskii theorem, the proposed controller ensures a global asymptotic stability for arbitrarily large delay. Finally, an illustrative example is given in order to show the effectiveness of our design method.

  • One problem with base isolators of the sliding type is that their dynamic responses are nonlinear, which cannot be solved in an easy manner, as distinction must be made between the sliding and non-sliding phases. The lack of a simple method for analyzing structures installed with base isolators is one of the obstacles encountered in application of these devices. As an initial effort toward simplification of the analysis procedure for base-isolated structures, an approach will be proposed in this paper for computing the equivalent damping for the resilient-friction base isolators (R-FBI), based on the condition that the sum of the least squares of errors of the linearized response with reference to the original nonlinear one is a minimum. With the aid of equivalent damping, the original nonlinear system can be replaced by a linear one, which can then be solved by methods readily available. In this paper, equivalent damping curves are established for all ranges of the parameters that characterize the R-FBI for some design spectra.

  • This paper discusses an on-line fuzzy dynamic model(FDM) identification of nonlinear processes for the design of fuzzy model based fault detection and isolation(FDI). The dynamic behavior of a nonlinear process is represented by a fuzzy aggregation of a set of local linear models. The identification is divided into two procedures. The first is the off-line identification of membership function. The second is the on-line identification of the local linear models. Then, we propose a residual generation scheme based on the parameters of local linear models and show that the scheme can be used for the design of FDI
