  • In this paper, We proposed the nonlinear controller and observer design for a ball and beam system. Unfortunately, for the ball and beam system, the control coefficient is zero whenever the angular velocity or ball position are zero. Therefore, the relative degree of the ball and beam system is not well defined. The presented the nonlinear controller and observer design is based on the approximation input-output feedback linearization. And we verified that the proposed nonlinear controller and observer scheme is the feasible through a computer simulation.

  • The design and implementation of Generalized Minimum Variance control laws for nonlinear multivariable systems that can include severe nonlinearities is considered. The quadratic cost index minimised involves dynamically weighted error and nonlinear control signal costing terms. The aim here is to show the controller obtained is simple to design and implement. The features of the control law are explored. The controller obtained includes an internal model of the process and in one form is a nonlinear version of the Smith Predictor.

  • The problem of observer design for a class of Lipschitz nonlinear systems is considered. We propose a new observer design method which takes into account the structure of perturbed nonlinear terms with a scaling factor ${\epsilon}$. An example is provided to demonstrate the usefulness of our result over the existing method.

  • Using an efficient adjoint variable method, we develop a unified design sensitivity analysis (DSA) method considering both steady state nonlinear heat conduction and geometrical nonlinear elasticity problems. Design sensitivity expressions with respect to thermal conductivity and Young's modulus are derived. Beside the temperature and displacement adjoint equations, another coupled one is defined regarding the obtained adjoint displacement field as the adjoint load in temperature field. The developed DSA method is shown to be very efficient and further extended to a topology design optimization method for the nonlinear weakly coupled thermo-elasticity problems using a density approach.

  • In this paper, the linear and nonlinear strut-tie model approaches for the analysis and design of concrete structures are suggested. The validity of the approaches are examined through the strength analysis of four dapped-end beams tested to failure. According to the analysis results, the nonlinear strut-tie model approach which takes the various characteristics of nonlinear behaviors into account in the analysis and design of structural concrete and predicts the strength of structural concrete proven to be an effective method for structural analysis and design.

  • In this note, a systematic design of a new robust nonlinear integral variable structure controller based on state dependent nonlinear form is presented for the control of uncertain more affine nonlinear systems with mismatched uncertainties and matched disturbance. After an affine uncertain nonlinear system is represented in the form of state dependent nonlinear system, a systematic design of a new robust nonlinear integral variable structure controller is presented. To be linear in the closed loop resultant dynamics and remove the reaching phase problems, the linear integral sliding surface is suggested. A corresponding control input is proposed to satisfy the closed loop exponential stability and the existence condition of the sliding mode on the linear integral sliding surface, which will be investigated in Theorem 1. Through a design example and simulation studies, the usefulness of the proposed controller is verified.

After a MIMO uncertain affine nonlinear system is represented in the form of state dependent nonlinear system, a systematic design of a robust nonlinear variable structure controller is presented. To be linear in the closed loop resultant dynamics, the linear sliding surface is applied. A corresponding diagonalized control input is proposed to satisfy the closed loop global exponential stability and the existence condition of the sliding mode on the linear sliding surface, which will be investigated in Theorem 1. Through a design example and simulation study, the usefulness of the proposed controller is verified.

  • Design sensitivity analysis for nonlinear structural problems has been emerged in the last decade as a glowing area of engineering research. As a result, theoretical formulations and computational algorithms have already developed for design sensitivity of nonlinear structural problems. There is not enough research for practical nonlinear problems using multi-element, due to difficulties of implementation into FEA. Therefore, nonlinear response analysis for stiffened shell which consists of Mindlin plate and Timoshenko beam, was considered. Specially, it presents the backward-Euler method which is adopted to describe an exact yield state in the stress computation procedure. Then, design sensitivity analysis of nonlinear structures, particularly elasto-perfectly-plastic structure, is developed using direct differentiation method. The accuracy of the developed sensitivity analysis was compared with the central finite difference method. Finally, on the basis of above results, design improvement for stiffened shell is suggested.

Computer aided reinforcement design of RC structures

  • In this study, a design process for reinforced concrete structures using the nonlinear FEM analysis is developed. Instead of using the nonlinear analysis to evaluate the required performance after design process, the nonlinear analysis is applied before designing the reinforcement arrangement inside the RC structures. An automatic reinforcement generator for computer aided reinforcement agreement is developed for this purpose. Based on a nonlinear FEM program for analyzing the reinforced concrete structure, a smart fictitious material model of steel, is proposed which can self-adjust the reinforcement to the required amount at the cracking location according to the load increment. Using this tool, the reinforcement ratio required at design load level can be decided automatically. In this paper, an example of RC beam with opening is used to verify the proposed process. Finally, a trial design process for a real size underground RC LNG tank is introduced.
