Surface Acoustic Waves(SAW) are generated on silicon wafer and $YZ-LiTaO_3$ substrate and are detected by noncontact method. As wave sources two kinds of transducers are used : the wedge-type of 20.0 MHz and fabricated Interdigital Transducer(IDT) of 20.8 MHz. SAW are modulated by the optical chopper frequency and are syncronized with a laser beam. In signal processing, intensity variations of light due to the intensity of SAW are analyzed using lock- in amplifier. From the results, corresponding to the applied input power, the intensity variations of a deflected light by corrugations on the substrates are increased and saturation phenomenon is observed.

Some applications require structural health monitoring in inaccessible components. This paper presents a technique useful for Structural Health Monitoring of double wall structures, such as double wall steam pipes and double wall pressure vessels separated from an ultrasonic transducer by three layers. Detection has been demonstrated at distances in excess of one meter for a fixed transducer. The case presented here is for one of the layers, the middle layer, being a fluid. For certain transducer configurations the wave propagating in the fluid is a wave with low velocity and attenuation. The paper presents a model based on wave theory and finite element simulation; the experimental set-up and observations, and comparison between theory and experiment. The results provide a description of the technique, understanding of the phenomenon and its possible applications in Structural Health Monitoring.

This study was carried out to measure the flaw height of welds in consideration of the effective probe angle in ultrasonic oblique detection. Specimens with inserted artificial flaws were made and flaw heights were estimated from detecting these specimens. Two different methods were applied to estimate flaw heights. From the result of the experiment, flaw height could be measured within the accuracy of 15% percent error and the difference between the probe distance method and beam path method is about 5% relatively small. It is considered that the results obtained this experimental study could be helpful informal ions for measuring flaw height.

In this paper, a new approach to detect surface cracks from a noisy thermal image in the infrared thermography is presented using an holomorphic characteristic of temperature field in a thin plate under steady-state thermal condition. The holomorphic function for 2-D heat flow field in the plate was derived from Cauchy Riemann conditions to define a contour integral that varies according to the existence and strength of a singularity in the domain of integration. The contour integral at each point of thermal image eliminated the temperature variation due to heat conduction and suppressed the noise, so that its image emphasized and highlighted the singularity such as crack. This feature of holomorphic function was also investigated numerically using a simple thermal field in the thin plate satisfying the Laplace equation. The simulation results showed that the integral image selected and detected the crack embedded artificially in the plate very well in a noisy environment.

The radar method is becoming one of the major nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques for concrete structures. Numerical modeling of electromagnetic wave is needed to analyze radar measurement results and to study the influence of measurement parameters on the radar measurements. Finite difference-time domain (FD-TD) method is used to simulate electromagnetic wave propagation through concrete specimens. In the experiments, three concrete specimens are made with the dimensions of 100 cm (length) x 100 cm (wideth) x 14 cm (depth). Three specimens had a Dl6 steel bar at 8, 10, 12 cm depth.

A method for the nondestructive read-out of the memory in ferroelectric thin films is demonstrated using the detection second harmonic currents introduced in the ferrolelectric capacitor as a response to an ac signal. The sign and phase of the second harmonic current depends on the polarized state +$P_r or -P_r$, The studied ferroelectric PZT thin film is found to have desirable features for the use as a memory element. This method and material seems as a promising approach for the nonvolatile memory storage.

An arc-shaped line array slit has been used for the laser generation of focused Lamb waves. The spatially expanded Nd:YAG pulse laser was illuminated through the arc-shaped line array slit on the surface of a sample plate to generate the Lamb waves of the same pattern as the slit. Then the generated Lamb waves were focused at the focal point of which distance from the slit position is dependent on the curvature of slit arc. The proposed method showed better spatial resolution than the conventional linear array slit in the detection of laser machined linear defect and drill machined circular defect on aluminum plates of 2mm thickness. Using the focused waves, we could detect the linear defect and the circular defect with the improvement of spatial resolution. The method can also be combined with the scanning mechanism to get an image just like by the scanning acoustic microscope(SAM).

The usefulness of the magnetic camera for non-destructive testing of aging aircraft is discussed in this paper. The magnetic camera can be used f magnetic particle testing(MT), magnetic flux leakage testing(MFLT), eddy current testing(ECT) and penetration testing(PT). It measures the distribution of a magnetic field and visualizes the magnetic pattern. Near and far side cracks, fatigue, thickness degradation, and cracks under rivets have been detected. The possibility of quantitative evaluation was also examined. Using indirect experiments, we verified the detection ability of the sensor for cracks in titanium and advanced composite materials.

In ultrasound-excited thermography, the injected ultrasound to an object is transformed to heat and the appearance of defects can be visualized by thermography camera. The advantage of this technology is selectively sensitive to thermally active defects. Despite the apparent simplicity of the scheme, there are a number of experimental considerations that can complicate the implementation of ultrasound excitation thermography inspection. Factors including acoustic horn location, horn-crack proximity, horn-sample coupling, and effective detection range all significantly affect the detect ability of this technology. As conclusions, the influence of coupling pressures between ultrasound exciter and specimen was analyzed, which was dominant factor in frictional heating model.

Contact-guided-wave tests are impractical for investigating specimens with limited accessibility and rough surfaces or complex geometric features. A non-contact setup with a laser-ultrasonic transmitter and receiver is quite attractive for guided-wave inspection. In the present work, we developed a non-contact guided-wave tomography technique using the laser-ultrasonic technique in a plate. A method for Lamb-wave generation and detection in an aluminum plate with a pulsed laser-ultrasonic transmitter and Michelson-interferometer receiver was developed. The defect shape and area in the images obtained using laser scanning, showed good agreement with the actual defect. The proposed approach can be used as a non-contact online inspection and monitoring technique.
