An Analysis of Driving Property of a Reflective Electronic Display Fabricated by Using Filtering Method of Non-moving Particles

  • The driving properties of a particle-insertion method that filters non-moving particles are analyzed, by measuring its optical and electrical properties. An area that is occupied by the moved particles is proposed, as a desirable evaluation method for a reflective display. To compare the driving property of the particle-moving method with that of the reported simple particle-loading method, two panels are fabricated, according to the different particle-insertion methods, in the same panel condition, of which the width of ribs is $30{\mu}m$, the cell size is $220{\mu}m{\times}220{\mu}m$, the cell gap is $116-120{\mu}m$, the q/m value of the black particles is $+1.8{\mu}C/g$ and that for the white particles is $-4.3{\mu}C/g$. The particle-moving method has a filtering effect which excludes the non-moving particles, inserting only movable particles into the respective cell, so that a panel fabricated by the particle-moving method can drive most of the particles in a cell. Also, most of the particles move at the threshold voltage of 40 V, with enhanced reflectivity. The driving property is also verified by measurement of the occupation rate of the moved particles.

  • Video based object tracking normally deals with non-stationary image streams that change over time. Robust and real time moving object tracking is considered to be a problematic issue in computer vision. Multiple object tracking has many practical applications in scene analysis for automated surveillance. In this paper, we introduce a specified object tracking based particle filter used in an environment of multiple moving objects. A differential image region based tracking method for the detection of multiple moving objects is used. In order to ensure accurate object detection in an unconstrained environment, a background image update method is used. In addition, there exist problems in tracking a particular object through a video sequence, which cannot rely only on image processing techniques. For this, a probabilistic framework is used. Our proposed particle filter has been proved to be robust in dealing with nonlinear and non-Gaussian problems. The particle filter provides a robust object tracking framework under ambiguity conditions and greatly improves the estimation accuracy for complicated tracking problems.

  • A particle method, recognized as one of gridless methods, has been developed to investigate non-linear free-surface motions interacting with structures. This method is more feasible and effective than conventional grid methods for solving flow fieldswith complicated boundary shapes. The method consists of particle interaction models representing pressure gradient, diffusion, incompressibility, and the free-surface boundary conditions without grids. In the present study, broken dam problems with various viscosity values are simulated to validate the developed method.

  • We present a robust localization algorithm using particle filter for mobile robots in a dynamic environment. It is difficult to describe moving obstacles like people or other robots on the map and the environment is changed after mapping. A mobile robot cannot estimate its pose robustly with this incomplete map because sensor observations are corrupted by un-modeled obstacles. The proposed algorithms provide robustness in such a dynamic environment by suppressing the effect of corrupted sensor observations with a selective update or a sampling from non-corrupted window. A selective update method makes some particles keep track of the robot, not affected by the corrupted observation. In a sampling from non-corrupted window method, particles are always sampled from several particle sets which use only non-corrupted observation. The robustness of proposed algorithm is validated with experiments and simulations.

  • The impact of a single wave generated by a dam break with a tall structure is modeled with a three-dimensional version of the Moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method. The particle method is more feasible and effective than methods based on grid connection problems involving violent free surface motions. In the present study, the Tsunami impact load and the change of longitudinal velocity component around the structure, which are obtained from the numerical simulation, are compared to those from experiments.

  • Particle filter algorithm has been proven very successful for non-linear and non-Gaussian estimation problem and thus it has been widely used for object tracking for video signals. If the object moves significantly, particle filter needs very large number of particles to track object and this results high computational cost. In this paper, modified particle filter by adopting motion vector is proposed for tracking vehicle in low frame rate(LPR) video input, which the object moving significantly and randomly between consecutive frames. In the proposed algorithm, motion vector is applied in selection and observe step. The experimental result shows that the proposed particle filter can track vehicle successfully in the case when previous one fails. And it also shows the propose method increases the precision of tracking.

  • Complexity of multiphase flows due to existence of more than two interface including free-surface in one system, cannot be simulated easily. Since more than two fluids affect to flows and disturb interface, non-linearities such as instabilities can be appeared. Among several instabilities on multiphase flows, one of representative is Rayleigh-taylor instability. In order to examine in importance of density disparity, several cases with numerous Atwood number are set. Moreover, investigation of influence on initial disturbance were also considered. Moving particle simulation (MPS) method, which was employed in this paper, was not widely used for multiphase problem. In this study, by adding new particle interaction models such as self-buoyance correction, surface tension, and boundary condition at interface models, MPS were developed having more strength of physics and robust. By applying newly developed multiphase MPS, considered cases are performed and compared each other. Additionally, though existence of disagreement of magnitude of rising velocity between theoretical values from linear potential theory and that of numerical simulation, agreement of tendency can be proved of similarity of result. the discordance of magnitude can be explained due to non-linear effects on numerical simulation which was not considered in theoretical result.

  • This paper proposes a novel multimodal optimization method, Coupling particles swarm optimization (PSO), to find all optima in design space. This method based on the conventional Particle Swarm Optimization with modifications. The Coupling method is applied to make a couple from main particle and then each couple of particles searches its own optimum by using non-stop-moving PSO. We tested out our method and other one, such as ClusteringParticle Swarm Optimization and Niche Particle Swarm Optimization, on three analytic functions. The Coupling Particle Swarm Optimization is also applied to solve a significant benchmark problem, the TEAM workshop benchmark problem 22
