  • Texts in natural images contain significant and detailed informations about the images. Thus, to extract those texts correctly, we suggest a text extraction method using color variance feature. Generally, the texts in images have color variations with the backgrounds. Thus, if we express those variations in 3 dimensional RGB color space, we can emphasize the text regions that can be hard to be captured with a method using intensity variations in the gray-level images. We can even make robust extraction results with the images contaminated by light variations. The color variations are measured by color variance in this paper. First, horizontal and vertical variance images are obtained independently, and we can fine that the text regions have high values of the variances in both directions. Then, the two images are logically ANDed to remove the non-text components with only one directional high variance. We have applied the proposed method to the multiple kinds of the natural images, and we confirmed that the proposed feature can help to find the text regions that can he missed with the following features - intensity variations in the gray-level images and/or color continuity in the color images.

  • The sesquiterpene cyclase (SC) was induced and its products were accumulated in the culture media of Hyoscyamus muticus hairy roots by addition of Rhizoctonia solani extracts. The cumulative production of solavetivone was nearly doubled by integrated extraction of the products from the media during the 24 h accumulation period. Western blots with monoclonal antibodies against SC show that the enzyme levels are the same for both extracted and non-extracted cultures. SC activities measured in vitro with radioactive substrate are not significantly different. These results suggest that productivity is controlled by substrate availability within the terpenoid pathway, and feedback regulation precedes the branch-point enzyme sesquiterpene cyclase.

  • This paper presents a new feature extraction algorithm which can deal with the problems of linear discriminant analysis, widely used for linear dimensionality reduction. The scatter matrices included in linear discriminant analysis are defined by the distances between each datum and its class mean, and those between class means and mean of whole data. Use of these scatter matrices can cause computational problems and the limitation on the number of features. In addition, these definition assumes that the data distribution is unimodal and normal, for the cases not satisfying this assumption the appropriate features are not achieved. In this paper we define a new scatter matrix which is based on the differently weighted distances between individual data, and presents a feature extraction algorithm using this scatter matrix. With this new method. the mentioned problems of linear discriminant analysis can be avoided, and the features appropriate for discriminating data can be achieved. The performance of this new method is shown by experiments.

  • An inhibitor of squalene synthase, a key enzyme in the cholesterol biosynthetic pathways and a target for improved agents to lower plasma levels of low-density lipoprotein, was sequentially purified from Curcuma longa by acetone extraction, silica gel column chromatography, and sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Active compound, YUF-01, was successfully purified and analyzed as $C_{20}H_{21}O_6$ by electron ionization mass spectrum. Through $^1H-NMR$ and $^{13}C-NMR$ analyses, YUF-01 was identified as curcumin, which showed strong inhibition of squalene synthase.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of silica-calcium phosphate composite (SCPC) granules on bone regeneration in extraction sockets. Methods: Ten patients were selected for a split-model study. In each patient, bone healing in SCPC-grafted and control ungrafted sockets was analyzed through clinical, radiographic, histomorphometric, and immunohistochemical assessments 6 months postoperatively. Results: A radiographic assessment using cone-beam computed tomography showed minimal ridge dimension changes in SCPC-grafted sockets, with 0.39 mm and 1.79 mm decreases in height and width, respectively. Core bone biopsy samples were obtained 6 months post-extraction during implant placement and analyzed. The average percent areas occupied by mature bone, woven bone, and remnant particles in the SCPC-grafted sockets were 41.3%±12%, 20.1%±9.5%, and 5.3%±4.4%, respectively. The percent areas of mature bone and woven bone formed in the control ungrafted sockets at the same time point were 31%±14% and 24.1%±9.4%, respectively. Histochemical and immunohistochemical analyses showed dense mineralized bundles of type I collagen with high osteopontin expression intensity in the grafted sockets. The newly formed bone was well vascularized, with numerous active osteoblasts, Haversian systems, and osteocytes indicating maturation. In contrast, the new bone in the control ungrafted sockets was immature, rich in type III collagen, and had a low osteocyte density. Conclusions: The resorption of SCPC granules in 6 months was coordinated with better new bone formation than was observed in untreated sockets. SCPC is a resorbable bone graft material that enhances bone formation and maturation through its stimulatory effect on bone cell function.

  • In this paper, we propose a implementation approach of the high-speed feature extraction algorithm. The proposed method is based on the block type classification algorithm which reduces the computation time when target macro block is divided to smooth block type that has no image features. It is quantitatively identified that occurs at 29.5% of the total image using 200 standard test images with $64{\times}64$ macro block size. This means that within a standard test image containing various image information, 29.5% can reduce the complexity of the operation. When the proposed approach is applied to the Canny edge detection, the required latency of the edge detection can be completely eliminated, such as 2D derivative filter, gradient magnitude/direction computation, non-maximal suppression, adaptive threshold calculation, hysteresis thresholding. Also, it is expected that operation time of the feature detection can be reduced by applying block type classification algorithm to various feature extraction algorithms in this way.

  • In order to increase the utilization of defatted sesame meal (DSM), a by-product of sesame oil production, the conditions of extraction of insoluble proteins from DSM by enzyme treatment were investigated. As a result of comparing the treatment results of proteolytic enzymes Alcalase, Flavorzyme, Neutrase, and Protamex with control, Protamex was effective in increasing the total solid and protein content. At the reaction conditions of Protamex (50 ℃, pH 6.0), the dosage of enzymes was appropriate for 1% of DSM and 3 h of enzyme reaction time. To improve the efficiency of enzymatic treatment, the protein content extracted increased as the heat treatment temperature increased, and slightly increased above 110 ℃. As a result of investigating the effect of the combination treatment of cell lytic enzyme (Tunicase) and protease (Protamex) on protein solubilization, it was most effective to treat the cell lytic enzyme after processing the protease. After heat treatment (110 ℃, 10 min), sequential treatment of Protamex and Tunicase increased the protein content by about 3.5 times (9.85→35.58 mg/mL) of the non-heated control and 2.2 times (15.83→35.58 mg/mL) of the heat treated control.

  • Rotigotine (RTG) is a non-ergot dopamine agonist used to manage the early stage of Parkinson's disease (PD) as transdermal patch. However, the poor medication compliance of PD patients and skin issues related with repeated applications of RTG patches lead to the search for alternative formulations and it also requires appropriate analytical methods for their in vivo evaluation. Thus, here, a sensitive, efficient, and cost-effective method to determine RTG in rat plasma using liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and multiple reaction monitoring was developed. The use of 20 µL of rat plasma for sample treatment, 8-OH-DPAT as the internal standard, and methyl tert-butyl ether as the LLE solvent in the present method gives it advantages over previous methods for the analysis of RTG in biological samples. The good analytical performance of the developed method was confirmed in specificity, linearity (the coefficient of determination ≥0.999 within 0.1-100 ng/mL), sensitivity (the lower limit of quantitation at 0.1 ng/mL), accuracy (81.00-115.05%), precision (≤10.75%), and recovery (81.00-104.48%) by following the FDA guidelines. Finally, the applicability test of the validated method to the in vivo evaluation of a RTG formulation showed that the present method is the only method which can be accurately applied to that longer than 24 hours, critical for the development of formulations with reduced dosing frequencies. Therefore, the present method could contribute to the development of new RTG formulations helpful to people suffering from PD.

  • Recently, there has been growing interest in personalized services tailored to an individual's preferences. This has led to ongoing research aimed at recognizing and leveraging an individual's personality traits. Among various methods for personality assessment, the OCEAN model stands out as a prominent approach. In utilizing OCEAN for personality recognition, a multi modal artificial intelligence model that incorporates linguistic, paralinguistic, and non-linguistic information is often employed. This paper examines the impact of the margin value set for extracting facial areas from video data on the accuracy of a personality recognition model that uses facial expressions to determine OCEAN traits. The study employed personality recognition models based on 2D Patch Partition, R2plus1D, 3D Patch Partition, and Video Swin Transformer technologies. It was observed that setting the facial area extraction margin to 60 resulted in the highest 1-MAE performance, scoring at 0.9118. These findings indicate the importance of selecting an optimal margin value to maximize the efficiency of personality recognition models.
