  • This paper deals with the development of a realistic shape optimization of damaged columns that are subjected to conservative and non-conservative forces, using the Genetic Algorithm (GA). The analysis is based on the design of the most optimized shape of the column under the constraint of constant weight, considering the Static, Vibrational, and Flutter characteristics. Under the action of conservative and non-conservative longitudinal forces, an elastic column loses its stability. A numerical analysis based on FEM has been performed on a uniform damaged column, to compute the fundamental buckling load, vibration frequency, and flutter load, under various end restraints. An optimization search based on the Genetic Algorithm is then executed, to find the optimal shape design of the column. The optimized column references the one having the highest buckling load, highest vibration frequency, and highest flutter load, among all the possible shapes of the column, for a given volume. A comparison is then made between the values obtained for the optimized damaged column, and those obtained for the optimized undamaged column. The comparison reveals that the incorporation of damage in the column alters its optimal shape to only a certain extent. Also, the critical load and frequency values for the optimized damaged column are comparatively low, compared with those obtained for the optimized undamaged column. However, these results hold true only for moderate-intensity damage cases. For high intensity damage, the optimal shape may not remain the same, and may vary, according to the severity of damage.

  • For a shear-deformable beam-column element subjected to non-conservative forces. equations of motion and a finite element formulation are presented applying extended Hamilton's principle. The influence of non-conservative force's direction parameter. internal and external damping forces, and shear deformation and rotary inertia effects on divergence and flutter loads of Beck's columns are intensively investigated based on element stiffness. damping and mass matrixes derived for the non-conservative system.

  • This paper, which is an extension of a previous work by Viola et al. (2002), deals with the dynamic stability of beams under a triangularly distributed sub-tangential forces when the effect of an elastically restrained end is taken into account. The sub-tangential forces can be realised by a combination of axial and tangential follower forces, that are conservative and non-conservative forces, respectively. The studied beams become unstable in the form of either flutter or divergence, depending on the degree of non-conservativeness of the distributed sub-tangential forces and the stiffness of the elastically restrained end. A non-conservative parameter ${\alpha}$ is introduced to provide all possible combinations of these forces. Problems of this kind are usually, at least in the first approximation, reduced to the analysis of beams according to the Bernoulli-Euler theory if shear deformability and rotational inertia are negligible. The equation governing the system may be derived from the extended form of Hamilton's principle. The stability maps will be obtained from the eigenvalue analysis in order to define the divergence and flutter domain. The passage from divergence to flutter is associated with a noticeable lowering of the critical load. A number of particular cases can be immediately recovered.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the healing rate of non-surgical endodontic treatment between C-shaped and non-C-shaped mandibular second molars. Materials and Methods: Clinical records and radiological images of patients who had undergone endodontic treatment on mandibular second molars between 2007 and 2014 were screened. The periapical index scoring system was applied to compare healing outcomes. Information about preoperative and postoperative factors as well as the demographic data of the patients was acquired and evaluated using chi-square and multinomial logistic regression tests. Results: The total healing rate was 68.4%. Healing rates for the mandibular second molar were 70.9% in C-shaped canals (n = 79) and 66.6% in non-C-shaped ones (n = 117). The difference was not statistically significant. Conclusions: The presence of a C-shaped canal in the mandibular second molar did not have a significantly negative effect on healing after treatment. Instead, proper pulpal diagnosis and final restoration were indicated as having significantly greater influence on the healing outcomes of C-shaped and non-C-shaped canals, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to apply the photoplethsmography(PPG) as a non-invasive tool to evaluate the blood flow of the anterior tooth in clinic. The system consist of two light-emitting diodes(LED) powered by 5V as the light source. The LED was designed to two weve lengths, 940(infrared) and 660(red)nm simultaneously with a 36nm bandwidth at half the peak intensity. The 54 anterior vital tooth were examined and the measured was analysed in frequency domian (power spectrum).(omitted)
