  • This paper reports that the Lambert W function applies to a non-iterative design of minimum mean square-error scalar quantizers for a Laplacian source. The contribution of the paper is in the reduction of the time needed for the design and the increased accuracy in resulting quantization points and thresholds, because the algorithm is non-iterative and the Lambert W function can be evaluated as accurately as desired.

Improved Exponential Estimator for Estimating the Population Mean in the Presence of Non-Response

  • This paper defines an improvement for estimating the population mean of a study variable using auxiliary information and known values of certain population parameter(s), when there is a non-response in a study as well as on auxiliary variables. Under a simple random sampling without a replacement (SRSWOR) scheme, the mean square error (MSE) of all proposed estimators are obtained and compared with each other. Numerical illustration is also given.

  • Vibration of a non-linear system under random parametric excitations was evaluated by probabilistic methods. The non-linear characteristic terms of a system structure were quasi-linearized and excitation terms were remained as they were An analytical method where the square mean of error was minimized was used An alternative method was an energy method where the damping energy and restoring energy of the linearized system were equalized to those of the original non-linear system. The numerical results were compared with those obtained by Monte Carlo simulation. The comparison showed the results obtained by Monte Carlo simulation located between those by the analytical method and those by the energy method.

An improved estimation procedure of population mean using bivariate auxiliary information under non-response

  • We propose new classes of estimators of population mean under non-response using bivariate auxiliary information. Some improved regression (or difference) type estimators have been proposed in four different situations of non response along with their properties and the expressions for the bias and mean square errors of the proposed estimators are derived under double (two-stage) sampling scheme. The properties of the suggested class of estimators are studied and it is observed that the proposed estimators performed better when compared to conventional estimators proposed by Singh and Kumar (Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference, 140, 2536-2550, 2010b), Shabbir and Khan (Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods, 42, 4127-4145, 2013) and Bhushan and Naqvi (Journal of Statistics and Management Systems, 18, 573-602, 2015). A comparative study is also conducted both theoretically as well as empirically in order to support the results.

  • 이 연구에서는 일상적인 글자넓이를 지닌 글자로 구성된 본문에 대해 선호도를 평정하도록 하여 가독성에 관한 연구에서 밝혀진 각 요인들의 수준들 중 가장 선호되는 수준은 어떤 것인가를 알아보고, 각 요인들간 상대적 중요도를 살펴보았다. 네모 틀 글자로 구성된 본문에서 선호도를 살펴본 실험1에서는 요인들간 상대적 중요도의 순위가 글자크기, 글줄간격, 글자넓이, 글줄길이, 글자간격, 글줄맞춤, 글자모양 순 으로 나타났다. 탈 네모를 글자로 구성된 본문을 사용한 실험2에서도 가장 중요한 요인은 글자크기였으나 두 번째 요인은 글자간격으로 나타났다. 이는 글자제작원리의 차이 및 탈 네모틀 글자에 대한 비 친숙성을 반영해주는 결과이다. 글자넓이의 수준변화가 극심한 이준석과 진영선(1998)의 연구에서는‘글자넓이’가 가장 중요하게 나타난 것과는 달리, 일상적인 글자넓이를 조작한 본 연구에서는‘글자크기’가 가장 중요한 것으로 나타났으므로 교재나 책의 본문을 구성할 때 글자크기를 가장 먼저 고려하고, 네모 틀 본문의 경우에는 글줄간격, 글자넓이 등을, 탈 네모틀 본문의 경우에는 글자간격, 글줄간격 등을 고려하는 것이 바람직할 것이다.

아다부스트 학습과 비정방형 Differential LBP를 이용한 얼굴영상 특징분석 (Face Image Analysis using Adaboost Learning and Non-Square Differential LBP)

  • In this study, we presented a method for non-square Differential LBP operation that can well describe the micro pattern in the horizontal and vertical component. We proposed a way to represent a LBP operation with various direction components as well as the diagonal component. In order to verify the validity of the proposed operation, Differential LBP was investigated with respect to accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity for the classification of facial expression. In accuracy comparison proposed LBP operation obtains better results than Square LBP and LBP-CS operations. Also, Proposed Differential LBP gets better results than previous two methods in the sensitivity and specificity indicators 'Neutral', 'Happiness', 'Surprise', and 'Anger' and excellence Differential LBP was confirmed.

  • The stress and the heat-flux auto-correlation functions in the Green-Kubo formulas for shear viscosity and thermal conductivity have non-decaying long-time tails. This problem can be overcome by improving the statistical accuracy by N (number of particles) times, considering the stress and the heat-flux of the system as properties of each particle. The mean square stress and the heat-flux displacements in the Einstein formulas for shear viscosity and thermal conductivity are non linear functions of time since the quantities in the mean square stress and the heat-flux displacements are not continuous under periodic boundary conditions. An alternative to these quantities is to integrate the stress and the heat-flux with respect to time, but the resulting mean square stress and heat-flux displacements are still not linear versus time. This problem can be also overcome by improving the statistical accuracy. The results for transport coefficients of liquid argon obtained are discussed.

  • A modified Bagdonavičius-Nikulin chi-square goodness-of-fit is defined and studied. The lymphoma data is analyzed using the modified goodness-of-fit test statistic. Different non-Bayesian estimation methods under complete samples schemes are considered, discussed and compared such as the maximum likelihood least square estimation method, the Cramer-von Mises estimation method, the weighted least square estimation method, the left tail-Anderson Darling estimation method and the right tail Anderson Darling estimation method. Numerical simulation studies are performed for comparing these estimation methods. The potentiality of the new model is illustrated using three real data sets and compared with many other well-known generalizations.
