  • The suitability of high-order accurate, central and upwind-biased compact difference schemes is evaluated for the large-eddy simulations of flows in complex geometry. Two flow geometries are considered: channel and circular cylinder. The effects of numerical dissipation and aliasing error on the evaluation of subgrid scale stress are investigated by extending the analysis by Ghosal (1) to centered and upwind compact schemes. It is shown that the failure of upwind schemes mainly comes from the aliasing error.

  • Spring-back of MS1470 steel sheets was numerically predicted using a non-linear kinematic hardening material behavior based on the Yoshida-Uemori model. From uniaxial tension and uniaxial tension-compression-tension data as well as the uniaxial tension-unloading-tension data, the parameters of the Yoshida-Uemori model were obtained. For the numerical simulations, the Yoshida-Uemori model was implemented into the commercial finite element program, ABAQUS/Explicit and ABAQUS/Standard using the user-defined material subroutines. The model performance was validated against the measured spring-back from the benchmark problems of NUMISHEET 2008 and NUMISHEET 2011, the 2-D draw bending test and the S-rail forming test, respectively.

  • Although very rare, a few cases of intradural extramedullary (IDEM) spinal tumor migration have been reported since Tomimatsu first reported a mobile schwannoma of the cervical cord in 1974. Schwan noma is a neurogenic tumor which originates from nerve sheath that it is relatively well-marginated tumor with little attachment or adhesion to surrounding tissue. Mobility of tumor in spinal canal sometimes can result in negative exploration at the expected area. We found three interesting cases in which different tumor locations observed in repeated magnetic resonance image (MRI) findings. All tumors were intradural and extramedullary schwannoma. We reviewed the literature about moving tumor in the spine through PUBMED search.

  • In the practical communication environment, the accurate channel state information (CSI) is difficult to obtain, which will cause the mismatch of resource and degrade the system performance. In this paper, to account for the channel uncertainties, a robust power allocation scheme for a downlink Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) heterogeneous network (HetNet) is designed to maximize energy efficiency (EE), which can ensure the quality of service (QoS) of users. We conduct the robust optimization model based on worse-case method, in which the channel gains belong to certain ellipsoid sets. To solve the non-convex non-liner optimization, we transform the optimization problem via Dinkelbach method and sequential convex programming, and the power allocation of small cell users (SCUs) is achieved by Lagrange dual approach. Finally, we analysis the convergence performance of proposed scheme. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can improve total EE of SCUs, and has a fast convergence performance.

  • In this paper, we consider a downlink non-orthogonal multiple access system with a base station and N mobile stations, where we assume that instantaneous channel state information (CSI) is available at the base station. A power allocation scheme is proposed to achieve perfect fairness, which means equal data rates for all mobile stations. However, the power allocation scheme using full CSI requires high complexity. Hence, a simple power allocation scheme with low complexity is proposed by using high signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) approximation. The simple power allocation scheme can achieve perfect fairness only for high SNR. However, it needs only the best CSI and the simple procedure to obtain power allocation coefficients. From simulation results, we show that the simple power allocation scheme provides remarkable fairness performance at high SNR.

  • Miniature ultrasonic and tactile sensors on Si substrate have been proposed, fabricated and characterized to detect objects for a dexterous robot. The ultrasonic sensor consists of piezoelectric PZT thin film on a Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$ and/or Si diaphragm fabricated using a micromachining technique; the ultrasonic sensor detects the piezoelectric voltage as an ultrasonic wave. The sensitivity has been enhanced by improving the device structure, and the resonant frequency in the array sensor has been equalized. Position detection has been carried out by using a sensor array with high sensitivity and uniform resonant frequency. The tactile sensor consists of four or three warped cantilevers which have NiCr or $Si:B^+$ piezoresistive layer for stress detection. Normal and shear stresses can be estimated by calculation using resistance changes of the piezoresitive layers on the cantilevers. Gripping state has been identified by using the tactile sensor which is installed on finger of a robot hand, and friction of objects has been measured by slipping the sensor.

  • Budding yeast has dozens of prions, which are mutually dependent on each other for the de novo prion formation. In addition to the interactions among prions, transmissions of prions are strictly dependent on two chaperone systems: the Hsp104 and the Hsp70/Hsp40 (J-protein) systems, both of which cooperatively remodel the prion aggregates to ensure the multiplication of prion entities. Since it has been postulated that prions and the remodeling factors constitute complex networks in cells, a quantitative approach to describe the interactions in live cells would be required. Here, the researchers applied dual-color fluorescence cross-correlation spectroscopy to investigate the molecular network of interaction in single live cells. The findings demonstrate that yeast prions and remodeling factors constitute a network through heterogeneous protein-protein interactions.
