  • PURPOSES : While driving, drivers are usually limited in communicating with others except for using the horn. Excessive use of the horn may cause noise pollution, quarrels between drivers and pedestrians, damage, etc. This study developed a methodology for environmental adaptation and improvements of vehicle horns. METHODS: In this study, we performed a literature review of previous studies and related technologies regarding the overuse and damage of the horn. The proposed methodology employed the paired comparison method, as well as the semantic differential method. These methods can consider various vehicle horns, such as the Sport Utility Vehicle(SUV) Horn, Van Horn, and Buzzer. In addition, we conducted a factor analysis in order to provide a direction for improvement of future horns. This research provides a means of complimenting existing intellectual property related to vehicle horns. RESULTS: As a result, the most preferred of the selected horns were the Buzzer at 86.7%. In addition, based on the factor analysis, the horns could be classified into pleasantness and comfort factors. The results indicate a positive reaction for various vehicle horns. The horn type and size of the process control have been properly developed considering the position of the vehicle and the surrounding noise measurements. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the proposed methodology, public and private sectors can use fundamental data for reasonable traffic-noise control policies.

  • A two-degree-of-freedom out-of-plane model with contact stiffness is presented to describe dynamical interaction between the pad and disc of a disc brake system. It is assumed that the out-of-plane motion of the system depends on the friction force acting along the in-plane direction. Dynamic friction coefficient is modelled as a function of both in-plane relative velocity and out-of-plane normal force. When the friction coefficient depends only on the relative velocity, the contact stiffness has the role of negative stiffness. The results of stability analysis show that the stiffness of both pad and disc are equally important. Complex eigenvalue analysis is conducted for the case that the friction coefficient is also dependent on the normal force. The results further verify the importance of the stiffness. It has also been found that increasing the gradient of friction coefficient with respect to the normal force makes the system more unstable. Nonlinear analysis is also performed to demonstrate various responses. Comparing the responses with experimental data has shown that the proposed model may qualitatively well represent a certain type of brake noise.

  • Due to development of visual media in various industrial sectors, the importance of image processing is increasing. Among the various image processing areas, edge detection is utilized widely for various fields such as object recognition, object segmentation, the medical and other industries. Edge includes the critical factors of images like size, direction and location. Then conventional methods such as Sobel, Prewitt, Roberts and Laplacian are proposed to detect edge. However, edge detection property of these methods is declined when they are applied to the image which corrupted by AWGN(Additive White Gaussian Noise). Therefore, an algorithm using modified weighted filter is proposed in this paper and our method has excellent property on edge detection.

  • With the development of the auto industry, the automobile manufacturers demand to shorten development period and reduce the cost. Compared with the traditional method, applying the virtual prototype is more economical. This paper presents a method for parameters sensitivity analysis and optimizing the performance of vehicle noise and vibration. The existing design processes were repeatedly analyzed with a focus on vehicle performance to decide the design parameters of dimension, thickness, mounting type of body and chassis systems in the vehicle development period. This paper describes the prediction technique of vehicle performance using L18 orthogonal array layout, quality deviation analysis and parameter sensitivity analysis for robust design. This paper analyzed the performance correlation equation through the frequency and sensitivity database according to a design factor change. The new concept is that the performance prediction is possible without repeated activities of test and analysis. This paper described the parameter analysis applications such as bush dynamic stiffness and bush void direction of rear suspension. Design engineer could efficiently decide the design variable using parameter analysis database in early design stage. These improvements can reduce man hour and test development period as well as to achieve stable NVH performance.

  • This study provided the analytical finite element method estimating the friction-induced noise on the complex beam structure. The frictional contact model was theoretically constructed and applied to the analytical finite element squeal model. The numerical results showed that the beam structure was excited by the mode-coupling instability of the specific system modes. Also, the direction of friction was shown to influence on the dynamic instability of the modes. Besides, the unstable modal frequencies estimated from the numerical calculation were validated by the experiment of the actual beam structure.

  • High sensitivity magnetic sensor having foreign metal detection capability is proposed utilizing giant magneto-impedance effect. Strip sensor showed the increasing output voltage when the external magnetic field was applied along with strip from strip grounding point, although the initial DC voltage varied depending on the pointing direction of strip sensor. Proposed sensor was able to eliminate more than half of background noise using active noise filter to achive high sensitivity, and it showed the capability to detect magnetized foreign metal object independent of ambient electro-magnetic noise and earth magnet. In case of ferrous sphere, the metal detection up to 0.8mm diameter was experimentally demonstrated at 5mm distance from strip sensor.

  • It is well known fact that acoustic positioning systems are absolutely needed for various underwater operations. According to the distances between their sensors they are classified into three parts: long baseline(LBL), short baseline(SBL), and ultra-short baseline(USBL). Among them the USBL system is widely used because of its simplicity, although it is the most inaccurate. Recently, in order to increase the positioning accuracy, various USBL systems using broadband signal such as MFSK(Multiple Frequency Shift Keying) are produced. However, their positioning accuracy is still limited by background noise and reflected waves. Therefore, there is difficulty in applying the USBL system using MFSK signal in a shallow water with noisy conditions. In order to examine the effect of the noise and wave reflections this paper analyze position errors for various conditions using numerical simulations. The simulation results say that tile SNR must be greater than 20dB and errors in the vertical direction are slightly increased by wave reflections by upper and lower boundaries.

  • Currently, edge detection is utilized in various areas. Edge detection is the preprocessing process for image processing in general, and this is a technology that is considered essential for image processing. According, research on this subject is carried out incessantly. Edge has important image related elements such as size, direction and location of the object of an image. Numerous methods were proposed for the detection. Among them, the representative methods are Sobel, Prewitt, Roberts, Laplacian. However, these existing methods are rather lacking when it comes to the edge detection characteristics in case of the image with mixed noise. Therefore, this study presented edge detection method that utilizes median and average values for the elements depending on the size and location of local mask.

  • This work presents a novel architecture of phase locked loop (PLL) with the current compensating scheme to improve phase noise performance. The proposed PLL has two Charge Pump (CP), main-CP (MCP) and sub-CP (SCP). The smaller SCP current with same time duration but opposite direction of UP/DN MCP current is injected to the loop filter (LF). It suppress the voltage fluctuation of LF. In result, it improves phase noise characteristic. The Proposed PLL has been fabricated with 0.35fm 3.3V CMOS process. Measured phase noise at 1-MHz offset is -103dBc/Hz resulting in a minimum 3dBc/Hz phase noise improvement compared to the conventional PLL.

  • This paper investigates the radiated emission from the enclosure aperture, when the enclosure contains a 4-layer PCB and the PCB is driven by a pulse train additive with the switching noise from an active device. Radiated emission characteristics with and without switch noise cases, respectively, are analyzed by changing the PCB location and the slot direction. The equivalent circuit of a DC-DC converter is used to simulate the switching noise of active device. Also, MWS simulation results are directly connected to the ADS simulator as a 2-port block. The simulated results are compared with the measured ones.
