  • Tantalum nitrides ($Ta_3N_5$) have been developed to substitute the Cd based pigments for non-toxic red pigment. Various doping elements were doped to reduce the amount of high price Tantalum element used and preserve the red color tonality. Doping elements were added in the synthesizing process of precursor of amorphous tantalum oxides and then Tantalum nitrides doped with various elements were obtained by ammonolysis process. The average particle size of final nitrides with secondary phases was larger than the nitride without the secondary phases. Also secondary phases reduced the red color tonality of final products. On the other hand, final nitrides without secondary phase had orthorhombic crystal system and presented good red color. In other words, in the case of nitrides without secondary phases, doping elements made a solid solution of tantalum nitride. In this context, doping process controlled the ionic state of nitrides and the amount of oxygen/nitrogen in final nitrides affected the color tonality.

  • Recently, ZnO has received attentionbecause of its applications in optoelectronics and spintronics. In order to investigate deep level defects in ZnO, we used N-doped ZnO with various of the N-doping concentration. which are reference samples (undoped ZnO), 27%, 49%, and 88%-doped ZnO. Photoinduced current transient spectroscopy (PICTS) measurement was carried out to find deep level traps in high resistive ZnO:N. In reference ZnO sample, a deep trap was found to located at 0.31 (as denoted as the CO trap) eV below conduction band edge. And the CN1 and CN2 traps were located at 0.09, at 0.17 eV below conduction band edge, respectively. In the case of both annealed samples at 200 and $300^{\circ}C$, the defect density of the CO trap increases and then decreases with an increase of N-doping concentration. On the other hands, the density of CN traps has little change according to an increase of N-doping concentration in the annealed sample at $300^{\circ}C$. According to the result of PICTS measurement for different N-doping concentration, we suggest that the CO trap could be controled by N-doping and the CN traps be stabilized by thermal annealing at $300^{\circ}C$.

  • We made attempts to improve photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles under visible light exposure by combining two additional treatments. N-doping of $TiO_2$ by ammonia gas treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ increased absorbance of visible light. By coating thin film of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and subsequent vacuum-annealing at $800^{\circ}C$, $TiO_2$, became more hydrophilic, thereby enhancing photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$. Four types of $TiO_2$ samples were prepared, bare-$TiO_2$, hydrophilic-modified $TiO_2$ ($h-PDMS/TiO_2$), N-doped $TiO_2$ ($N/TiO_2$) and hydrophilic-modified and N-doped $TiO_2$ ($h-PDMS/N/TiO_2$). Adsorption capability was evaluated under dark condition and photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ was evaluated by photodegradation of MB under blue LED (400 nm< ${\lambda}$) irradiation. N-doping on $TiO_2$ was characterized using XPS and hydrophilic modification of $TiO_2$ surface was analyzed by FT-IR spectrometer. It was found that N-doping and hydrophilic modification both had positive effect on enhancing adsorption capability and photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ at the same time. Particularly, N-doping enhanced visible light absorption of $TiO_2$, whereas hydrophilic surface modification increased MB adsorption capacity. By combining these two strategies, photocatalytic acitivity under visible light irradiation became the sum of individual effects of N-doping and hydrophilic modification.

  • A simple, but effective means of tailoring the physical and chemical properties of carbon materials should be secured. In this sense, chemical doping by incorporating boron or nitrogen into carbon materials has been examined as a powerful tool which provides distinctive advantages over exohedral doping. In this paper, we review recent results pertaining methods by which to introduce boron atoms into the $sp^2$ carbon lattice by means of high-temperature thermal diffusion, the properties induced by boron doping, and promising applications of this type of doping. We envisage that intrinsic boron doping will accelerate both scientific and industrial developments in the area of carbon science and technology in the future.

  • The composite photocatalyst, N-$TiO_2$ loaded with $Ni_2O_3$, was prepared by $N_2$ plasma treatment. X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, $N_2$ adsorption, UV-vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the prepared $TiO_2$ samples. The results indicated that the band gap energy was decreased obviously by nitrogen doping, whereas loading of $Ni_2O_3$ did not influence the band gap and visible light absorption. The photocatalytic activities were tested in the degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) under visible light. The photocatalytic activity and stability of composite photocatalyst were much higher than that of catalyst modified with nitrogen or $Ni_2O_3$ alone. The synergistic effect of doping nitrogen and $Ni_2O_3$ over $TiO_2$ was investigated.

  • We apply a density functional theory (DFT) and DFT-based non-equilibrium Green's function approach to study the structures, energetics and charge transport characteristics of nitrogen-doped graphene and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with additional doping of phosphorus or boron atoms. Considering graphitic, pyridinic, and porphrin-like N doping sites and increasing N-doping concentration, we analyze the structures of N-P and N-B doped graphene and particularly focus on how they affect the charge transport along the lateral direction. For the GNRs, we also consider the differences between defects formed at the edge and bulk regions. Implications of our findings in the context of electronic and energy device applications will be also discussed.

  • This study examined the unique self-doping behavior of carboxylated polyaniline (PCA). The self-doped PCA was synthesized using an environmentally benign enzymatic polymerization method with cationic surfactants. XPS showed that HCl-doped PCA contained approximately 34% of protonated amines but self-doped PCA contained 9.6% of the doped form of nitrogen at pH 4. FTIR and elemental analysis showed that although the PCA was doped with the proton of strong acids at low pH via the protonation of amines, the self-doping mechanism of PCA at pH > 4 was mainly due to hydrogen bonding between the carboxylic acid group and amine group.

  • Herein, a facile approach for the development of effective and low-cost carbon precursors from acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) rubber is reported. ABS rubber with a negligible char yield can be converted into an excellent carbon precursor with approximately 54% char yield under a nitrogen atmosphere at 800℃ by simple iodine doping and subsequent heating at 110℃ under an inert atmosphere. The enhanced char yield is attributed to the improved intermolecular interactions between the ABS chains caused by the formation of covalent bonds between the butadiene segments, along with the newly developed charge-charge interactions and other indiscriminate radical-radical couplings. The charges and radicals involved in these interactions are also generated by iodine doping. We believe that this study will be useful for the development of low-cost carbon precursors.

  • Among various dopant candidates, nitrogen (N) atoms are considered as the most effective dopants to improve the diverse properties of graphene. Unfortunately, recent experimental and theoretical studies have revealed that different N-doped graphene (NGR) conformations can result in both p- and n-type characters depending on the bonding nature of N atoms (substitutional, pyridinic, pyrrolic, and nitrilic). To overcome this obstacle in achieving reliable graphene doping, we have carried out density functional theory calculations and explored the feasibility of converting p-type NGRs into n-type by introducing additional dopant candidates atoms (B, C, O, F, Al, Si, P, S, and Cl). Evaluating the relative formation energies of various binary-doped NGRs and the change in their electronic structure, we conclude that B and P atoms are promising candidates to achieve robust n-type NGRs. The origin of such p- to n-type change is analyzed based on the crystal orbital Hamiltonian population analysis. Implications of our findings in the context of electronic and energy device applications will be also discussed.
