Structural properties of Cu-Ni alloy films, such as preferred orientation, crystallite size, in-ter-planar spacing, cross-sectional morphology, and electrical resistivity, are investigated in terms of tar-get configurations that are used in the film deposition by means of magnetron co-sputtering. Two different target configurations are considered in this study: a dual-type configuration in which two separate tar-gets (Cu and Ni) and different bias types (RF and DC) are used and a Ni-on-Cu type configuration in which Ni chips are attached to a Cu target. The dual-type configuration appears to have some advantages over the Ni-on-Cu type regarding the accurate control of atomic composition of the deposited Cu-Ni alloy. However, the dual-type-produced film exhibits a porous and columnar structure, the relatively large internal stress, and the high electrical resistivity, which are mainly due to the relatively low mobility of adatoms. The affects of thermal treatment and deposition conditions on the structural and electrical properties of dual-type Cu-Ni films are also discussed.
The effect of Nb on interfacial bonding characteristics of Ni-Cr alloy for porcelain fused to metal crown (PFM) has been studied in order to investigate oxide layer. A specimens of Ni-Cr alloy, which is 0.8mm in thickness, within the porcelain furnace of 1,000$^{\circ}C$ with four tests such as air, vacuum, air for 5 minutes and vacuum for 5 minutes in order to examine an oxide behavior of alloy surface generated by the adding of Nb to be controlled at a rate of 0, 1, 3 and 5. Oxide film was observed form of the fired specimens with scanning electron microscope (SEM), and at the same time it measured Electron Probe Micro Analyzer (EPMA). The result of this study were as follows: 1. Cr oxide film and Nb oxide film were observed from the surface of specimen to be controlled at a rate of Nb 1%. 2. Nb oxide film was observed from the interface of specimens to be controlled at a rate of Nb 1% and 3%. 3. The stability of oxide films that treated in air were more stable than treated under vacuum.

Microstructural properties of as-grown and annealed CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy (HEA) oxynitride thin films were investigated. The CoCrFeMnNi HEA oxynitride thin film was grown by magnetron sputtering method using an air gas, and annealed under the argon plus air flow for 5 h at $800^{\circ}C$. The as-grown film was homogeneous and uniform composed of nanometer-sized crystalline regions mixed with amorphous-like phase. The crystalline phase in the as-grown film was face centered cubic structure with the lattice constant of 0.4242 nm. Significant microstructural changes were observed after the annealing process. First, it was fully recrystallized and grain growth happened. Second, Ni-rich region was observed in nanometer-scale range. Third, phase change happened and it was determined to be $Fe_3O_4$ spinel structure with the lattice constant of 0.8326 nm. Hardness and Young's modulus of the as-grown film were 4.1 and 150.5 GPa, while those were 9.4 and 156.4 GPa for the annealed film, respectively.
We utilized terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) to measure the thickness and electrical properties of nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) films. This technique not only aligns well with traditional methods, such as haze-meter and transmission-densitometer measurements, but it also reveals the electrical properties and thickness of films down to a few tens of nanometers. The complex conductivity of the Ni-Cr thin films was extracted using the Tinkham formula. The experimental values closely aligned with the Drude model, indicating the reliability of our Ni-Cr film's electrical and optical constants. The thickness of Ni-Cr was estimated using the complex conductivity. These findings emphasize the potential of THz-TDS in quality control of metallic nanofilms, pointing toward an efficient and nondestructive test (NDT) for such analyses.
In this study the initial stage nucleation and growth of Ni silicide on (001) Si by evaporation and furnace annealing have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The pressure was $10^{-6}$ Torr during evaporation and annealing. And the annealing temperature to produce $NiSi_2\;was\;800^{\circ}C$. From the evaporated film, $NiSi_2$ nucleus has grown into Si substrate with an epitaxial orientation relationship. Interfaces between $NiSi_2$ and Si were A-type {111} interfaces and {100} $NiSi_2$ interfaces were also observed at the initial stage of nucleation. Ni silicide grew into Si substrate, but the nucleus partly grew into the evaporated film, with no facets, from the nuclei in the Si substrate. $NiSi_2$ nucleus with (111) habit planes was also observed.
A viscous Ni solution was coated over amorphous Si thin film for evenly spread of Ni metal source. The Ni s. prepared by dissolving $NiCl_2$ into IN HCI and mixing with propylene glycol. $NiCl_2$ and Ni were deposited on the amorphous film after oven dry and they enabled to obtain a uniform crystallization. The crystallization using the viscous Ni solution was a Ni-silicide mediated process, the same process used with Ni metal layer. The crystallization temperature was lowered to $480^{\circ}C$ by the synergy effect of silicide-mediated crystallization and microwave-induced crystallization. Lateral crystallization was also enhanced such that the velocity of lateral crystallization by microwave annealing became faster than by furnace annealing.
Chloride baths for electrodeposited Ni thin films were fabricated by dissolving metal Ni powders with the mixed solution consisting of HCl and de-ionized water. Current efficiency, residual stress, surface morphology and microstructure of Ni films with the change of metal ion ($Ni^{2+}$) concentrations in the plating solution were studied. Current efficiency was measured to be more than 90% with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ concentrations in the plating solution. Residual stress of Ni thin film was increased from about 400 to 780 MPa with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ concentration from 0.2 to 0.5 M. It is gradually decreased to 650 MPa at 0.9 M $Ni^{2+}$ concentration. Smooth surface morphologies were observed over 0.3 M $Ni^{2+}$ concentration, but nodule surface morphology at 0.2 M. Ni films consist of FCC(111), FCC(200), FCC(220) and FCC(311) peaks in XRD patterns. Preferred orientation of FCC(111) was observed and its intensity was slightly decreased with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ concentration. The average grain size was slightly increased at 0.3 M $Ni^{2+}$ concentration and then slightly decreased with increasing $Ni^{2+}$ concentration.
Ni/Cr thin film is very interesting material as thin film resistors, filaments, and humidity sensors because their relatively large resistivity, more resistant to oxidation and a low temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR). These interesting properties of Ni/Cr thin films are dependent upon the preparation conditions including the deposition environment and subsequent annealing treatments. Ni/Cr thin films of 250 nm were deposited by DC magnetron sputtering on $Al_2O_3/Si$ substrate with 2-inch Ni/Cr (80/20) alloy target at room temperature for 45 minutes. Annealing treatments were performed at $400^{\circ}C,\;500^{\circ}C,\;and\;600^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours in air or $H_2$ ambient, respectively. The clear crystal boundaries without crystal growth and the densification were accomplished when the pores were disappeared in air ambient. Most of surface was oxidic including NiO, $Ni_2O_3$ and $Cr_xO_y$(x=1,2, y=2,3) after annealing in air ambient. The crystal growth in $H_2$ ambient was formed and stabilized by combination with each other due to the suppression of oxidized substance on film surface. Most oxidic Ni was restored when the oxidic Cr was present due to its stability in high-temperature $H_2$ ambient.
Buffer layers such as $CeO_2\;and\;Yb_2O_3$ films for YBCO coated conductors were deposited on (100) $SrTiO_3$ single crystals and (100) textured Ni substrates by a metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) system of the hot-wall type. The substrates were moved with the velocity of 40 cm/hr. Source flow rate, $Ar/O_2$ flow rate and deposition temperature were main processing variables. The degree of film epitaxy and surface morphology were investigated using XRD and SEM, respectively. On a STO substrate, the $CeO_2$ film was well grown epitaxially above the deposition temperature of $450^{\circ}C$. However, on a Ni substrate, the XRD showed NiO (111) and (200) peaks due to Ni oxidation as well as (111) and (200) film growth. For the films deposited with $O_2$ gas as oxygen source, it was found that the NiO film was formed at the interface between the buffer layer and the Ni substrate. The NiO layer interrupts the epitaxial growth of the buffer layer. It seems that the epitaxial growth of the buffer layer on Ni metal substrates using $O_2$ gas is difficult. We are considering a new method avoiding Ni oxidation with $H_2O$ vapor instead of $O_2$ gas.
CuNi alloy films are deposited by co-sputtering of dual targets (Cu and Ni, respectively). Effects of the co-sputtering conditions, such as powers applied to the targets, deposition pressures, and substrate temperatures, on the structural and electrical properties of deposited films are systematically investigated. The composition ratio of Ni/Cu is almost linearly decreased by increasing the DC power applied to the Cu target from 25.6 W to 69.7 W with the RF power applied to the Ni target unchanged(140 W). it is noted that the chamber pressure during deposition and the film thickness give rise to a change of the Ni/Cu ratio within the films deposited. The former may be due to a higher sputtering yield of Cu atom and the latter due to the re-sputtering phenomenon of Cu atoms on the surface of deposited film. The film deposited at higher pressures or at lower substrate temperatures have a smaller crystallite size, a higher electrical resistivity, and much more voids. This may be attributed to a lower surface mobility of sputtered atoms over the substrate.
