Objective: There has been no prospective study that examined intramuscular injection of high-dose vitamin D in Korean adults. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of high-dose vitamin $D_3$ after intramuscular injection in Korean adults with vitamin D deficiency. Method: This study was a 24-week, prospective, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. A total of 84 subjects ${\geq}19$ and <65 years of age were randomly allocated to either the vitamin $D_3$ or placebo group in a 2:1 ratio. After randomization, a single injection of plain vitamin $D_3$ 200,000 IU or placebo was intramuscularly administered. If serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentrations were <30 ng/mLon week 12 or thereafter, a repeat injection was administered. Results: After a single intramuscular injection of vitamin $D_3$ to adults with vitamin D deficiency, the proportion of subjects with serum 25(OH)D concentrations ${\geq}30ng/mL$ within 12 weeks was 46.4% in the vitamin $D_3$ group and 3.6% in the placebo group (p<0.0001). The proportion of subjects with serum 25(OH)D concentrations ${\geq}30ng/mL$ within 24 weeks was 73.2% in the vitamin $D_3$ group and 3.6% in the placebo group (p<0.0001). Mean change in serum 25(OH)D concentrations at weeks 12 and 24 after vitamin $D_3$ injection was $12.8{\pm}8.1$ and $21.5{\pm}8.1ng/mL$, respectively, in the vitamin $D_3$ group, with no significant changes in the placebo group. Serum parathyroid hormone concentrations showed a significant decrease in the vitamin $D_3$ group but no change in the placebo group. Conclusion: Intramuscular injection of vitamin $D_3$ 200,000 IU was superior to placebo in terms of its impact on serum 25(OH)D concentrations, and is considered to be safe and effective in Korean adults with vitamin D deficiency.
In this paper, I tried to examine the aspects of overcoming the aftermath of war through literary works. As history is continuously being reinterpreted and reevaluated, historical figures are described differently and given new meanings especially in the field of literature. It is not only important to examine these interpretations from previous generations themselves; it is also important to analyze them from a modern day perspective and look closely at their meanings. This research, by focusing on the post Manchu's invasion period, I examined the contemporary discussion. Literary works which were written in the post Manchu's invasion had different meaning comparing to the other time. Scholars at that time wanted to use historical figures as an allegory of temporary national situation. And this social phenomena was deeply related to the temporary discourses such like wipe off a disgrace by taking revenge on Qing (boksu $s{\breve{o}}lch^{prime}I$, 復讐雪恥) or loyalty to the Ming dynasty ($taemy{\breve{o}}ng$${\breve{u}}iri$, 對明義理). So that this research takes genre, time period, and nationality as the main variables to interpret typical historical figures and study their aspects.
Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging contaminants in aquatic environmental samples. Therefore, it required rapidly and certainly analytical method for pharmaceuticals which are existed in environment. In this study, Liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) with electrospray ionization (ESI) was used to measure the concentrations of 7 pharmaceuticals (quinoxaline-2-carboxylic acid, acetylsalicylic acid, diclofenac-Na, naproxen, ibuprofen, mefenamic acid, talniflumate) from environmental water or aquatic samples simultaneously. Effective sample clean-up by solid-phase extraction (SPE) prior to LC-MS/MS analysis is necessary. For further purification, Mixed Cation eXchange (MCX) and Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance (HLB) solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges were used to eliminate the remaining interferences. LODs (Limits of Detection) and MDLs (Method Detection Limits) for the spiked sample in fresh water were in the range of 0.05~1.50 pg/mL and 0.17~4.90 pg/mL, respectively. The absolute recovery in the concentration of 1.0 ng/mL were between 81.9 and 116.3%. The acidic pharmaceuticals were detected in concentrations of 0.018~16.925 ng/mL in aquatic environmental samples.

Purpose: Detection of TSH-binding inhibitor immunoglobulin (TBII) in patients with hyperthyroidism is an important result of Graves' disease (GD) and hyperthyroidism treatment. This has been made out an inspection by commercial radio-receptor assays. To increase the sensitivity and the specificity of the assay, many results of the assay were reported. In this study we evaluated the clinical usetulness of TBII assays by the Comparative method. Material and Methods: We were measured by using healthy control group (n=30, male=20, female=10) of Seoul National University Hospital Healthcare System Gangnam Center from January to March in 2009. Similarly, We were measured by using hyperthyroid (TSH<$0.05\;{\mu}IU/mL$, FT4>1.80 ng/dL) experimental group (n=58, male=14, female=44) of division of endocrinology and metabolism department of internal medicine Seoul National University Hospital from January to March in 2009. We made a comparative study of each two assays from the first generation to the third generation. We were used of TSAb assay as a measurement of GD diagnostic technique. Results: The specificity of healthy control group was 100% according to the generation. (Specificity=100%, n=30) The sensitivity of hyperthyroid experimental group were the first generation RSR<%> (79.3%, n=58), RSR (51.7%, n=58), the second generation RSR-CT (93.1%, n=58), BRAHMSCT (98.3%, n=58), the third generation ELISA (94.6%, n=56), ECLIA (97.7%, n=58) and TS-Ab<%> (93.5%, n=46). Conclusion: We were used of TSAb assay as a measurement of GD diagnostic technique, The result of data showed a high correlation between the third generation TBII assay and the second generation TBII assay ($R^2$=0.923). Instead of the first generation assay, the second generation assay can be more useful in clincal diagnosis.

Purpose : Vitamin D deficiency rickets is a significant public health problem that results from insufficient exposure to sunlight and inadequate vitamin D supplementation. The purpose of this study is to identify the clinical characteristics of vitamin D deficiency rickets in infants. Methods : Data of 35 infants diagnosed as vitamin D deficiency rickets at Sanggye-Paik Hospital, Seoul, Korea, from March 2007 to May 2009 were reviewed. Children with plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels <15 ng/mL and 15-30 ng/mL were considered to have vitamin D deficiency and vitamin D insufficiency, respectively. Results : Thirty-five infants (22 boys, 13 girls) were diagnosed with rickets. Mean age at diagnosis was $7.4{\pm}7.1$ months (range: 0.1-29.8 months). Eighteen infants (51%) were vitamin D deficient and seventeen infants (49%) were insufficient. Twenty-eight of all (80%) diagnosed as subclinical rickets. Twenty-nine infants (83%) were below the age of 12months. Twenty infants (57%) had breastfed and ten infants (29%) had iron deficiency anemia. Nine of breastfed infants (45%) were vitamin D deficient and ten of their mothers were vitamin D insufficient. Overall, radiographic evidence of rickets was present in 93% of the cases. Radiographic sign of rickets was evident even in vitamin D insufficient state. Conclusion : It is important for the clinician to screen for subclinical vitamin D deficiency rickets in inadequately supplemented infants by pairing 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels with wrist radiographs. A nationwide epidemiological study of vitamin D deficiency rickets must be conducted and evidence-based national guidelines must be defined to prevent rickets.

A loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) primer set (WBPH-65) was designed for the species-specific detection of white-backed planthopper (WBPH) Sogatella furcifera based on the full-length sequence of the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) (KC417469.1). The WBPH-65 primer set consists of six primers (total 165 bp), F3 (18 bp), B3 (18 bp), FIP (43 bp), BIP (40 bp), LF (21 bp), and LB (25 bp). After the LAMP reaction of three rice planthoppers, S. furcifera, Nilaparvata lugens, and Laodelphax striatellus, with the WBPH-65 primer set for 60 min at $65^{\circ}C$, the LAMP products were observed in the genomic DNA of S. furcifera only. According to the DNA amount of S. furcifera and incubation duration at $65^{\circ}C$, the difference of fluorescence relative to the negative control (0 ng) was clearly observed in a 40-min incubation with 10 and 100 ng or in case of 60-min incubation with 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 ng. There was little difference in fluorescence between the negative control and all the other DNAs tested in 20- and 30-min incubations. On the other hand, the WBPH-65 primer set without LF and LB primers showed little amplification in the genomic DNAs of the three rice planthoppers, S. furcifera, N. lugens, and L. striatellus in a 60-min incubation. These results suggest that all six primers (F3, B3, FIP, BIP, LF, and BF) are necessary for the WBPH-65 primer set to detect S. furcifera within a 60-min incubation, and is able to discriminate S. furcifera from at least N. lugens and L. striatellus.

Objectives: To investigate the role of TGF (Transforming growth factor-$\beta$) involved in the paracrinic communication during decidualization between UEC (uterine epithelial cells) and USC (uterine stromal cells), we have employed a co-culture system composed of human endometrial epithelial and stromal cells in defined hormonal conditions. Design: In the co-culture, endometrial epithelial cells cultured in the matrigel-coated cell culture insert are seeded on top of the endometrial stromal cells cultured within a collagen gel. The co-culture was maintained for 48 hours under the following hormonal conditions: progesterone dominant condition (100 nM P4 and 1 nM E2) or estrogen-dominant condition (100 nM E2 and 1 nM P4). 10 ng/ ml HGF and/or 10 ng/ml TGF-$\beta$1 are added. Methods: RT-PCR is utilized to detect mRNAs quantitatively. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunohistochemical staining are utilized to detect proteins in the tissue. Results: Prolactin mRNA is expressed in the co-cultured stromal cells under the progesterone dominant condition. TGF-$\beta$1 and its receptors are expressed in both the co-cultured epithelial and stromal cells irrespective of the steroid present, which is in contrast with no or negligible expression of TGF-$\beta$1 or its receptor in cells separately cultured. Both estrogen and progesterone significantly elevate the concentration of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) in the conditioned medium of the co-culture with the value of 4, 325 pg/ml in E2-dominant and 2, 000 pg/ml in P4-dominant condition compare to 150 pg/ml in no hormone. In separately cultured stromal cells, administration of HGF induces the expression of TGF receptor 1 in both hormonal conditions, but induction of TGF receptor 2 is only manifest in the P4-dominant condition. Administration of TGF-$\beta$ and HGF directly induce the decidualization marker prolactin mRNA in separately cultured stromal cells. Conclusion: It is likely that steroid hormones induces prolactin mRNA indirectly by promoting the cell to cell communication between the stromal and the epithelial cells. TGF-$\beta$ and HGF are two possible paracrine mediators in the human endometrial decidualization.
The Formation of acrylamide was studied in Maillard model reaction systems based on asparagine-glucose. The mixture of asparagine and glucose in equal molar ratio, and then heated at 125, 150, 175 and $200^{\circ}C$ for 10, 20 and 30 minute, respectively. The reaction products were extracted with ethyl acetate and methanol, and then isolated and detected on FFAP capillary column and HP-5MS 5% phenyl methyl siloxane column by using GC/MS. Acrylamide was detected only from methanol extracts and on FFAP capillary column, at retention time 23.53 min., and the detection limit was 4.6 ng. Acrylamide content mainly increased with increasing temperature and processing time till $175^{\circ}C$, therefore, maximal acrylamide formation occurred at $175^{\circ}C$ for 10 minute ($116{\mu}g/g$), while, above $175^{\circ}C$, higher temperatures or prolonged processing times caused a decrease of acrylamide levels, finally disappeared at $200^{\circ}C$ for 30 minute. Three major compounds were identified as 1,3-dihydroxypropanone, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyrane-4-one and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, and three minor compounds also as 5-methylfurfural, 2-acetylpyrrole and N,N-dimethylcyclohexamine, from ethyl acetate or methanol extracts on FFAP or HP-5MS capillary column.

This study has been carried out in order to effectively manage three groups of unregulated hazardous organic substances (PCDD/DFs, PAHs, PCBs) in South Korea. The investigated substances have been analyzed according to the test methods for hazardous substances in specified wastes provided by the National Institute of Environmental Research, Korea. Total contents of the organic compounds have been determined for hazardous wastes from three major industrial categories (paint, iron removal, steelmaking), such as waste organic solvent, waste paint or dust. By investigating the waste samples for 7 PAHs using GC/MSD, Naphthalene has been detected (N.D~1631.33 mg/kg). The highest Naphthalene concentration, which exceeded the korean marine dumping waste standard, was found in waste organic solvents and waste paints. Although a content analysis of 7 PCB isomers has been conducted, none of these compounds was detected. The analysis of PCDD/DFs has revealed that all samples meet the criterion for low POP content defined in the technical guidelines developed under the Basel Convention. The PCDD/DFs content in dust samples deriving from 10 manufacturing processes (billet, bloom) was determined to be in the range of N.D~5.66 ng I-TEQ/g waste.
We precisely measured and analyzed the dynamics of peptide-antibody interactions, using an ellipsometric biosensor based on a silicon substrate. To reduce the signal error due to the imperfect flatness of the substrate for extremely low concentrations of peptide, we fabricated the biosensor with a silicon substrate coated with Dextran SAM, instead of a glass prism coated with a thin metallic thin film. At an injection speed of $100{\mu}l/min$ of buffer liquid, we detected the dynamics of antibody-Dextran SAM or peptide-antibody fixed on biosensor, respectively. We detected the dynamics of antibody-Dextran SAM interactions down to a low concentration of 5 ng per liter, and we precisely measured the dynamics of association and dissociation of peptide and antibody down to 100 nM of peptide. We obtained the rate constants for association and dissociation from fitting the data by using deduced dynamical equation. As a result, we obtained an equilibrium constant for dissociation of 97 nM of peptide-antibody complex, which belongs to Class I.
