In order to obtain velocity profile of blood flow with high spatial resolution, a micro PIV technique consisted of a fluorescent microscope, double-pulsed YAG laser, cooled CCD camera was applied to in-vitro blood flow experiment through a micro round tube of a diameter $100{\mu}m$. Velocity distributions of blood flow for rabbit were obtained. The viscosity profiles for shear rate were found at flowing condition. To provide hemorheological characteristics of blood flow, the viscosities for shear rate were evaluated. The viscosity of blood also steeply increase by decreasing shear rate resulting in Non-Newtonian flow, especially in low shear rate region caused by RBC rheological properties. The results show typical characteristics of Non-Newtonian characteristics from the results of velocity profile and viscosity for blood flow. From the inflection points, cell free layer and two-phase flow consisted with plasma and suspensions including RBCs can be separated.
In the current flow visualization studies, the role of non-Newtonian characteristics (such as shearra to dependent viscosity and viscoelasticity ) on flow behavior across the sudden ex- pansion step in a circular pipe as a model for blood flow experiments is investigated over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. The expansion ratios tested are 2.000 and 2.667 and the range of the Reynolds number covered in the current flow visualization tests are 10~35, 000 based on the inlet. diameter. The reattachment longuEs for the viscoelastic fluids in the lami- nar flow regime are found to be much shorter than those for the Newtonian fluid. In addition it decreases significantly with increasing concentration of viscoelastic fluids at the same Reynolds number. However, in the turbulent flow regime, the reattachment length for the viscoelastic fluids Is two or three times longer than those for water, and gradually increases with increasing concentration of viscoelastic solutions, resulting In 25 and 28 step-height dis- tances for 500 and 1, 000 lpm ployacrylamide solutions, respectively. This may be due to the fact that the elasticity in pobacrylamide solutions suppresses the eddy motion and controls separation and reattachment behavior in the sudden expansion pips flow.
The importance of shear thinning non-Newtonian blood rheology on the hemodynamic characteristics of idealized cerebral saccular aneurysms were investigated by carrying out CFD simulations assuming two different non-Newtonian rheology models (Carreau and Ballyk models). To explore effects of vessel curvature, a straight and a curved vessel geometry were considered. The wall shear stress(WSS), relative residence time(RRT) and velocity distribution were compared at the different phases of cardiac cycle. As expected, blood entered the aneurysm at the distal neck and created large vortex in both aneurysms, but with higher momentum on the curved vessel. Hemodynamic characteristics such as WSS, and RRT exhibited only minor effects by choice of different rheological models although Ballyk model produced relatively higher effects. We conclude that the assumption of Newtonian fluid is reasonable for studies aimed at quantifying the hemodynamic characteristics, in particular, WSS-based parameters, considering the current accuracy level of medical image of cerebral aneurysm.

The non-Newtonian flow curves of sodium bis-(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate-water lamellar liquid crystals were obtained in various concentrations and temperatures by using a cone-plate rheometer. By applying non-Newtonian flow equation to the flow curves for AOT-water lamellar liquid crystal samples, the rheological parameters were obtained. Particular attention is given to the hysteresis loop detected when the liquid crystal samples are shear under increasing-decreasing shear stress modes which result in thixotropic and dilatant behavior. Sodium bis-(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate-water lamellar liquid crystals behave as weak gels when they are subjected to shear flow, but when the applied stress surpasses the yield stress, they exhibit non-linear viscoelasticity. Upon decreasing shear rate, the dispersion still preserves much of its structure and consequently its shear stress remains higher than the values measured in the increasing shear rate mode.
This experimental study concerns the characteristics of a helical flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one is rotating. The pressure losses and skin friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of Non-Newtonian fluid, aqueous solution of sodium carbomethyl cellulose (CMC) and bentonite with inner cylinder rotational speed of 0~400 prm. Also, the visualization of helical flows has been performed to observe the unstable waves. The results of present study reveal the relation of the Reynolds number Re and Rossby number Ro with respect to the skin friction coefficients. In somehow, they show the existence of flow instability mechanism. The pressure losses increase as the rotational speed increases, but the gradient of pressure losses decreases as the Reynolds number increases in the regime of transition and turbulence. And the increase of flow disturbance by Taylor vortex in a concentric annulus with rotating inner cylinder results in the decrease of the critical Reynolds number with the increase of skin friction coefficient.
The flow of an incompressible Ellis fluid in an inclined asymmetric channel, driven by peristaltic waves was studied under low Reynolds number and long wavelength assumptions. The wave on each side of the channel are assumed to be an infinite train of sinusoidal waves, both having the same constant wave speed and wavelength however, they vary in wave amplitude, channel half width and phase angle. We derived expressions for the axial and transverse velocities, volume flow rate, pressure rise per unit wavelength and streamlines. The effects of varying the wave amplitudes, the phase angle, the channel width, the angle of inclination of the channel as well as the fluid parameters on the flow were analyzed. Trapping conditions were determined and the presence of reflux highlighted using the streamlines for the necessary channel and fluid conditions. By varying the fluid parameters, changes in the fluid that deviated from the Newtonian case resulted in a reduction in the axial velocity in the neighborhood of the center of the channel and a simultaneous increase in the velocity at the periphery of the channel. A nonlinear relation was observed with the pressure rise and the volume flow rate. This nonlinear relation is more pronounced with an increase in the absolute value of the volume flow rate. For Newtonian fluids a linear relation exists between these two variables. The fluid parameters had little effects on the streamlines. However, variations of the wave amplitudes, volume flow, channel width and phase angle had greater effects on the streamlines and hence the trapped region.
An analysis is made to study the solute transport in a Casson fluid flow through an annulus in presence of oscillatory flow field and determine how this flow influence the solute dispersion along the annular region. Axial dispersion coefficient and the mean concentration expressions are calculated using the generalized dispersion model. Dispersion coefficient in oscillatory flow is found to be a function of frequency parameter, Schmidt number, and the pressure fluctuation component besides its dependency on yield stress of the fluid, annular gap and time in the case of steady flow. Due to the oscillatory nature of the flow, the dispersion coefficient changes cyclically and the amplitude and magnitude of the dispersion increases initially with time and reaches a non - transient state after a certain critical time. This critical value varies with frequency parameter and independent of the other parameters. It is found that the presence of inner cylinder and increase in the size of the inner cylinder inhibits the dispersion process. This model may be used in understanding the dispersion phenomenon in cardiovascular flows and in particular in catheterized arteries.
Steady and physiological flows of a Newtonian fluid and blood in the bifurcated arterial vessel are numerically simulated. Distributions of velocity, pressure and wall shear stress in the bifurcated arterial vessel are calculated to investigate the differences between steady and physiological flows. For the given Reynolds number physiological flow characteristics of a Newtonian fluid and blood in the bifurcated arterial vessel are quite different from those of steady flows. No flow separation or flow reversal in the bifurcated region in the downstream after stenosis appears during the acceleration phase. Also, no recirculation region is seen for steady flows. However, during the deceleration phase the flow began to exhibit flow reversal, which is eventually extended to the entire wall region.
A three-dimensional numerical analysis of the flow and heat transfer characteristic of wood-flour-filled polypropylene melt in an extrusion die was carried out Used for this analysis were Finite Concept Method based on FVM, unstructured grid and non-Newtonian fluid viscosity model. Temperature and flow fields are closely coupled through temperature dependent viscosity and viscous dissipation. With large Peclet, Nahme, Brinkman numbers, viscous heating caused high temperature belt near die housing, Changing taper plate thickness and examining some predefined parameters at die exit investigated the effect of taper plate on velocity and temperature uniformities. In the presence of taper plate, uniformity at die exit could be improved and there existed an optimum thickness to maximize it.
The objective of the present study were to measure the viscosities of non-Newtonian fluids by the transient flow concept in a capillary tube and to apply to hemodynamic studies and pump performance evaluations. The developed capillary tube viscometer could be used to measure the viscosities of the non-Newtonian fluids for a wide range of the shear rate by a run of experiment in a very short time interval. The measured viscosities of water and blood fur different shear rates were good agreement with those of the well established data. The measured viscosities for muddy water varied with the shear rates.
