  • This paper presents a study of the elastohydrodynamic lubrication of elliptical contacts where lubricant entrainment coincides with the major axis of the Hertzian contact ellipse. A finite difference method and the Newton-Raphson method are applied to analyze the problem. Film contours and pressure distributions are compared with the results for lubricant entrainment coincides with the minor axis. Variations of the minimum and central film thicknesses with the radius ratio are also examined. The results showed that the present numerical scheme can be used generally in the analysis of the EHL of elliptical contacts where the lubricant entraining vector did not coincide with either of the principal axis of the conjunction.

  • The homotopy perturbation method (HPM) to predict the pre- and post-buckling behaviour of simply supported steel beams with rectangular hollow section (RHS) is presented in this paper. The non-linear differential equations solved by HPM derive from a kinematics where large twist and cross-sections distortions are considered. The results (linear and non-linear paths) given by the present HPM are compared to those provided by the Newton-Raphson algorithm with arc length and by the commercial FEM code Abaqus. To investigate the effect of cross-sectional distortion of beams, some numerical examples are presented.

  • The load flow calculation is one of the most critical issues in electrical power systems. Generally, load flow has been calculated by Gauss-Seidel method and Newton-Raphson method but these methods have some problems such as non-convergence due to heavy load and initial value. In this paper, to overcome such problems, the power flow is calculated by genetic algorithm. At the heavy load, the solution for problem can not be obtained by the Newton-Raphson method. However, it can be solved in case of using genetic algorithm. In this paper, the strong point of this method would be demonstrated in application to an example system.

  • In this paper, a finite difference method and the Newton-Raphson method are used to evaluate the Hamrock and Dowson's EHL film thickness formulas in elliptical contact problems. The minimum and central film thicknesses are compared with the Hamrock and Dowson's numerical results for various dimensionless parameters and with their film thickness formulas. The results of present analysis are more accurate and physically reasonable. The minimum film thickness formula is similar with the Hamrock and Dowson's results, however, the central film thickness formula shows large differences. Therefore, the Hamrock and Dowson's central film thickness formula should be replaced by following equation. $H_{c} = 4.88U^{0.68}G^{0.44}W^{0.096}(1-0.58e^{-0.60k})$ More accurate film thickness formula for general elliptical contact problems can be expected using present numerical methods and further research should be required.

  • The rollers and/or races in cylindrical and tapered roller bearings should be profiled to relieve high edge stress concentrations caused by their finite lengths and misalignment. In this study, a numerical analysis was performed to investigate the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) of a Lundberg profile-type cylindrical roller. A finite difference method with fully nonuniform grids and the Newton-Raphson method were used to present detailed EHL pressure distributions and film shapes, as well as the variations in the minimum and central film thicknesses with the profile modification coefficient. In the Lundberg profile, the maximum pressure and minimum film thickness always occurred near the edges. Proper modification of the Lundberg profile considerably increased the minimum film thickness.

  • An atomatic mesh generation scheme with unstructured quadrilateral elements on trimmed surfaces has been developed. Trimmed surfaces are often encountered in modeling of structures with complex shapes such as aircrafts, automobile structures, pressure vessels and etc. For unstructured mesh generation with quadrilateral elements, a domain decomposition algorithm employing loop operators has been used. Mesh generation on trimmed surface is performed in three steps. First, trimmed surfaces with holes or cuts are transformed to th largest projection planes in which the meshes are constructed. The constructed meshes are transformed to the u-v parametric plane and then finally to the original 3D surfaces. Th exact locations of holes or cuts in projection planes are determined by the Newton-Raphson method. Sample meshes are constructed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • This introduces a improved method of the forward kinematics analysis, which finds the 6DOF motions and velocities from the given six cylinder lengths in the Steward platform. The numerical method(Newton Raphson Mehotd)of the forward kinematics analysises has the disadvantage of the long calculated time. To overcome this, we propose the competitive method that determine a proper initial value. Through the competitive method, we can select a proper initial value so that the calculate time is reduced. therefore we can give the property of the real time process to the forward kinematics analysis. We show the result comparing between general Newton-Raphson method and proposed one. From the result we verify the performance of the proposed method.

  • The major purpose of this article is the comparison of estimation method with Newton-Raphson, Kalman-filter, and prediction method with Kalman prediction. Conditional expectation in space time bilinear(STBL) model, which is a very powerful and parsimonious nonlinear time-series model for the space time series data can be viewed as a set of time series collected simultaneously at a number of spatial locations and time points, and which have appeared in a important applications areas: geography, geology, natural resources, ecology, epidemiology, etc.

  • An automated calibration system of sound level meters was developed and tested. As a standard sound source, the speaker unit(Forstex FE208) cabineted by 440$\times$390$\times$490 $\textrm{mm}^3$(LHW) volume wood box was adopted. Including this source, the driving part was found out to have a good linearity of sound pressure output vs AC voltage input. The Hybrid-Bisect/Newton-Raphson method modified by the linearity was adopted as a searching algorithm. Uisng GPIB interface, the console PC make the control, measurements, and calculations and finally make the accumulation of useful data and results automatically by the instructon in the program coded by C languate. Several trials of automatic calibration using this developed system give the reliable results.

  • A numerical analysis of elastohydrodynamic lubrication of elliptical contacts with both rolling and spinning has been carried out. A finite difference method with non-uniform grid systems and the Newton-Raphson method are applied to solve the problems. The velocity vectors resulting from combined spinning and rolling/sliding motion lead to asymmetric pressure distributions and film shapes. Pressure distributions, film contours and variations of the minimum and central film thicknesses are compared with various spin-roll ratios. Reduction of the minimum film thickness under spinning is remarkable whereas the central film thickness is relatively less. The spin motion have large effect on variations of the minimum film thickness with load parameter which are small in pure rolling/sliding cases. Therefore present numerical scheme can be used in the analysis of general elliptical contact EHL problems and further studies are required.
