  • The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing intention to stay among new graduate nurses. The participants were 127 new graduate nurses working at A University hospital in Gyeonggi Province. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. The results showed that job satisfaction, reality shock, working period, and resilience were significant predictors of intention to stay and explained for 44.2% of the variance in intention to stay. The findings of this study suggest that interventions focusing on reducing the reality shock through pre-experiences or trainings in clinical situations and enhancing the resilience are needed to improve intention to stay for the new graduate nurses. Also it is necessary to establish a support system and work environment to improve nursing job satisfaction, and a long-term education program of more than 6 months is needed to help new nurses adapt to work.

  • This study analyzed the housing market before and after the New Stay movement which was introduced in 2015. In this study, the territories having a New Stay Project and non-involved territories were analyzed based on the apartment price changes according to supply for 12 months before and after the movement date. This study used the difference-in-differences statistical technique. A comparison was carried out in Michuhol-gu, Incheon between Dowha-dong where a New Stay Project was executed, and Sungeui-dong where no project was executed, based on the movement date. It was seen that the price level in the former territory was higher than the latter demonstrating that the introduction of the New Stay Project in Dowha-dong lowered the apartment prices nearby (Sungeui-dong). A comparison in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon between Omogcheon-dong where a New Stay Project was executed and Gosaek-dong where there was no such project, based on the movement date showed that the introduction of the New Stay Project in Omogcheon-dong seemed to lower or stabilize the apartment prices nearby (Gosaek-dong). These results imply that the apartment prices in nearby areas can be stabilized if the supply volume of company-type rental houses is increased.

  • Day stay anesthesia should include: rapid smooth onset; rapid recovery without residual side effects; absence of adverse effects (N/V); and providing postoperative analgesia. General anesthesia with multi-modalities (inhalation, intravenous and local anesthesia) may be preferable in day stay surgery. Future studies on new drugs and techniques for day stay anesthesia need comparing the increased coat of newer treatments with the potential financial savings resulting from earlier hospital discharge, reduced supplemental drugs, and earlier return to work.

  • This study presents the performance characteristics of a small Francis turbine with an inline casing and is a continuation of a previous study. A new runner design has been implemented using the previous facility. The specific speed of the new runner has been modified from $N_s$ 80 to $N_s$ $100m-kW-min^{-1}$. This turbine can be installed in a city water supply system. To dissipate excess pressures in the water line system an inline-turbine can be used instead of an inline-pressure reducing valve. Thus, some of the energy can be recovered by utilizing the pressure difference. For best applicability and minimal space consumption, the turbine is designed with an inline casing instead of a common spiral casing. As a characteristic of inline casing, the flow accesses to the runner are in the radial direction, showing low efficiency. The installation of vanes improves the internal flow and positively affects the output power. In contrast to the previous study, the new runner reduces the effect of the stay vanes by maintaining a higher efficiency.

  • A new theoretical model on rain-wind induced vibration (RWIV) of a continuous stay cable is developed in this paper. Different from the existing theoretical analyses in which the cable was modeled as a segmental rigid element, the proposed scheme focuses on the in-plane and out-of-plane responses of a continuous stay cable, which is identical with the prototype cable on cable-stayed bridge. In order to simplify the complexities, the motion law of the rivulet on the cable surface is assumed as a sinusoidal way according to some results obtained from wind tunnel tests. Quasi-steady theory is utilized to determine the aerodynamic forces on the cable. Equations of motion of the cable are derived in a Cartesian Coordinate System and solved by using finite difference method to obtain the in-plane and out-of-plane responses of the cable. The results show that limited cable amplitudes are achieved within a limited range of wind velocity, which is a unique characteristic of RWIV of stay cable. It appears that the in-plane cable amplitude is much larger than the out-of-plane cable amplitude. Rivulet frequency, rivulet distribution along cable axis, and mean wind velocity profile, all have significant effects on the RWIV responses of the prototype stay cable. The effects of damping ratio on RWIVs of stay cables are carefully investigated, which suggests that damping ratio of 1% is needed to well mitigate RWIVs of prototype stay cables.

  • Purpose: Most patients with acute low back pain visit emergency room (ER). They mostly need beds, and if their length of stay is longer, it can become difficult to accommodate new patients at the ER. We analyzed the treatment process of patients with back pain and tried to find method for shortening of the length of stay at the ER. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients with back pain who visited at our ER for one year. Patients were divided into two groups according to their length of stay at ER and were compared the charateristcs of between two groups. Results: A total of 274 patients were included in the study. Eigthy-nine patients (32.5%) were in the group with less than 3 hours and 185 patients (67.5%) were in the other group. In the comparison of the two groups according to the medical departments, the number of patients who were in group with more than 3 hours were 25 (14.0%) in the emergency department, 94 (50.5%) in neurosurgery, 66 (35.5%) in orthopedic surgery. Length of stay was significantly increased in orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery (p=0.014). In addition, the length of stay was longer when computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging examinations were performed (p=0.000). Regardless of the type of analgesic agent, the median time to the analgesic treatment was shorter in the group with less than 3 hours (p=0.034). Conclusions: In patients with back pain who visit the ER, the emergency medicine doctor will early control the pain and do not unnecessary image examination to reduce a length of stay at the ER.
