Discussions and debates over media education abound in Korra as the number of both institutions that provide media related education and students enrollment for these programs increases rapidly in recent years. In spite of this rather impressive expansion, however, many have raised serious questions about media education of Korea for its not being able to meet the need of the Industry and students, and, moreover, inability to face the challenges brought by new communication related technologies. Who teaches What for what purposes are some of the fundamental questions underlying these heated debates and discussions. To understand these rather complex and interrelated issues more clearly, it is attempted to delineate the nature of these debates by exploring the evolutionary process of media education. The issues related to debates over purposes of media education, curriculum, and faculty qualification have changed through the history of media education, but the nature of the debates, that is the struggle between professionalism and academism, or the tension between practice and theory, has not. Upon this understanding, some argue that what distinguishes opposing sets of dichotomies, such as skills vs. knowledge, training vs. education, now-how vs. know-why. professional vs. academic, practice vs. theory, is more a reflection of social class division and group interests which have privileged theory over practice than a rational scholastic distinction. In addition, it has been often pointed out that the media studies have failed to establish ties with specific industries, and furthermore academic studies seriously lack solid theoretical and practical bases. In the case of the United States, leaders of the industry had contributed much for the Initiation of journalism education in a college setting. However, once inaugurated,, the process of its evolution has depended heavily on academicians. In a country like Korea, where academic and theoretical orientation is much stronger, these problems of media studies and education are even more acute. In this study, it is suggested that academicians and educators be more open-hearted to the realities of changing world, practices of the industries, and recruitment of professionals and practitioners to fill the gap between practice and theory, for the sake of the future of media studies and education.
The study tried to explore ordinary people's press fairness concept being neglected by the mainstream of fairness research thus far. With empirical standpoint, this study first investigated (un)fairness concept held by general audience, and then compared it with existing ones long suggested by experts such as scholars and media workers. Also, the study examined audience's concept construct in terms of its characteristics and implications. A systematic sample of 300 adults in Seoul was interviewed and their answers (instances of press unfairness) were analyzed and categorized. The most serious problem in fairness, they pointed, was that the press's not neutral. Also, truth and balance were importantly raised as a press problem with regard to fairness. The result showed press ethics and commercial morals could be a significant element for people's view on press fairness. These elements are new to the literature and heuristic regarding how to approach toward fairness issue in our society. The study also discusses the implications of other findings.
The purpose of this study is to explore the influence exerted by integration of newsroom upon creation, organization, and operation of news, efficiency during the process of creating news, and the qualitative level of journalism. This study has also utilized a quantitative and qualitative survey method that compares the results of survey on perception of media personnel with the results of case studies. The survey on perception is based on a questionnaire survey separately conducted on changes to organizational operation after integration among executives of top 170 newspapers in USA selected based on circulation. The details of survey include the influence of 1) Change in the system of news coverage and reporting, 2) Qualitative change to journalism, and 3) The differing backgrounds of constituent members upon operation of the integrated newsroom. Moreover, to find out whether the quantitative index shown by the perception survey is actually reflected on the media which operates an integrated newsroom, this study has conducted an in depth interview with related personnel of New York Times and Media General in USA, TMG of UK, Nordjyske of Denmark, and CBS in Korea and also engaged in literature survey. The results of the surveys are as follows. First, this study found that unlike the assertions of many earlier studies, integration of the newsroom generally exerts positive influence upon the organizational operation of a media corporation. Second, after integration, inefficiency of the past for the organization in general including coverage and reporting system, communication within and outside the organization, output of journalists, etc. decreased, and synergistic effect was created. Third, integration of the newsroom generally exercised positive influence upon enhancing the qualitative level of journalism. Fourth, while the current personnel of media generally offered positive assessment of integrating constituent members of differing backgrounds as one newsroom, the case study also showed that there are many negative aspects to it.
Over the last couple of years, digital diplomacy has become a fascinating area of research among Mass Communication, Peace and Conflict Studies, and International Affairs scholars. Social media and new technology open up new avenues for governments, individuals, and organizations to engage with foreign audiences. However, developing countries' governments are still lacking in the realization of the potential of social media. This study aims to analyze the usage of social media (Facebook & Twitter) by the two biggest countries in South Asia (Pakistan and India). I selected 10 government officials' social media accounts including prime ministers', national press offices', military public relations offices', public diplomacy divisions', and ministries of foreign offices' profiles. The study relies on quantitative content analysis and a comparative research approach. The total number of analyzed Twitter tweets (n=1,015) and Facebook posts (n=1,005) include 10 accounts, five from each country. In light of Kent and Taylor's (1998) dialogic communication framework, the results indicate that no digital engagement and dialogue occurs between government departments and the public through social networking sites. Government departments do not engage with local or foreign audiences through digital media. When comparing both countries, results reveal that India has more institutionalized and organized digital diplomacy. In terms of departmental use of social media, the digital diplomacy division and foreign office of India is more active than other government departments in that nation. Meanwhile, Pakistan's military public relations office and press office is more active than its other government departments. In conclusion, both countries realize the potential of social media in digital diplomacy, but still lack engagement with foreign audiences.
$I$ $am$$a$$Weasel$ > is a radically different communicative form in several ways. It innovatively utilizes podcast, a kind of internet radio format while dealing actively with thorny political issues and scandals in much direct and challenging fashion. Also this program adopts politically-charged parody, sharp critique of current socio-political issues, as well as lively dialogues through which the program provides both acute political awareness and entertainment. As a new kind of talk show and an alternative media form, this program has gained much popularity and attention since its appearance. Considering the fact that the journalistic fields and public spheres are in disarray through the government intervention and wrought with fierce partisanship and political polarization, the role of this program needs to be examined both cautiously and contextually. This study aims to shed some lights on the multifaceted and much contentious role of $I$ $am$$a$$Weasel$ > through a textual reading and discourse analysis, as well as email interviews.
This study started from the questions on how the selection of the 'New 7 Wonders of Nature' was repeatedly reported, and whose voice was emphasized on which perspective in regional daily newspapers. This is a subject that received the attention of the media with the tag of 'fraud on a national scale'. The results of this study showed that there was no difference among newspapers in all frames excluding the frame of public confidence in relation to the N7W Foundation. Furthermore, after examining the change before and after six media companies' conclusion of MOUs, a significant difference was discovered between newspapers concerning the frame of public confidence pertaining to the N7W Foundation. However, no significant difference was discovered in all frames after the MOUs were concluded. The tone of the press mostly displayed a positive or supporting perspective, and almost no negative or critical reports were published. Second, 68.0% of all the articles displayed use direct quotes. The speakers of direct quotes were mostly from official organizations that initiated the selection event for the 'New 7 Wonders of Nature', and almost no civilians or representatives from civil social groups were quoted. On the other hand, direct quotes of anonymous sources were used rather frequently, and most of these sources were confirmed to be official sources and related parties that initiated the selection event for the 'New 7 Wonders of Nature'. As a result, regional daily newspapers displayed support and advocated for the voices of the entities that initiated the selection event for the 'New 7 Wonders of Nature', including the district government, by emphasizing and repeating their perspectives in the newspaper coverage.
With the advent of digital media environment, distribution way of information changes, legalization of the right to be forgotten is becoming increasingly necessary. However, too much emphasis on protection of personal information to hinder the development of the Internet industry and constitutional rights, including freedom of speech and right to know might be infringed. Thus, the scope of the right to be forgotten there is a need to clarify the rules. First, the rights of personal information can be divided into two. Right to be forgotten can be applied to the right to self-determination of personal information, but the right to self-determination information about social personality cannot be applied to. Second, in the digital media environment, old news article over the internet repeatedly distribution as the new damage is generating. Because old news article is a historical record, the right to be forgotten can not be applied. Thus, appropriate for digital media environment must find new ways.
Over the years, the types of media and media usage patterns have rapidly changed and communication channels in society have diversified. The courses in the universities on "media" have accordingly been altered to adapt to these changes. To investigate the ways in which the higher learning institutions in Korea have adapted to the changes in the media environment, this study analyzed the curriculum provided by the communication/media departments in the areas of Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. For the curricula analysis,names of the course soffered at the selected universitie swere analyzed; then keywords were extracted from morphological analysis of thes enames. Also, to investigate the changes over time, the courses offered in the years 2008 and 2017 were selected. The network analysis was done by using Netminer; the shape, main components, and major nodes of the network were compared. The results showed that firstly, overall shape of network from 2008 and 2017 looked similar. Due to the existence of concentrations within the major, the overall shape of the network showed several independent components, rather than one network. However, the analysis revealed differences in major nodes in the 2008 case from 2017. In the 2008 case, 'programming,' 'media,' 'introduction' among others were the major nodes; in 2017, 'editing' was the most important node. This signifies that in 2017, the curricula in the selected universities emphasized more practical and technical media education. In other words, the universities have adapted to the changing environments by including new topics, paying more attention to video media, and providing students with more direct field experiences.
This study examined research trends via network analyses of keywords appeared in academic research articles about news reports in South Korea during the last 10 years from 2006 to 2015. Keyword network analyses of 4410 keywords from 1108 articles suggested that framing, agenda setting, third-person effect, selective exposure, and uses and gratification were main theories but most studies used framing theory. Research areas included news reports on politics, economics, science, world issues, or tour. However, research on news reports covering culture, sports or daily life were not identified. In terms of media, research on both traditional and emerging media were ample. Research on broadcasting new, online news, and social media were frequently observed.

Social discourses surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) in the fashion industry are vital as they extend beyond language and encompass social practices. This study aimed to understand how discourses on DE&I with in the fashion industry are reconstructed and practiced in society. Therefore, this paper analyzed DE&I in the fashion industry, by focusing on the New York Times articles, employing a quantitative research model based on corpus analysis and a qualitative approach through critical discourse analysis. Results of the analysis of textual practice, showed that the New York Times emphasized black individuals as the central discourse and created a critical racial narrative regarding DE&I in the fashion industry characterized by a dichotomy of black vs. white confrontation. Furthermore, results of the discourse practice analysis revealed that the dichotomy of racial confrontation in the New York Times article tended to select the subject of discourse related to racial DE&I in the fashion industry according based on social and historical context. Thirdly, the analytical results of sociocultural practices indicated that the dichotomous racial discourse between black and white, propagated by the New York Times, spread across social media, transforming fashion from an industry to a domain where black individuals struggle for human rights.
