  • New teaching and learning theory on various aspects about class is needed to implement education which reflects constructivism, ideally. For an ideal learner-centered mathematics class, tangible and intangible elements related to education(view of knowledge, view of leaner, teacher's role, evaluation, the form of class, learning, teaching material, etc.) should be integrated from a constructive perspective and especially, teaching material has to be premised on that learners have intellectual abilities to construct knowledge themselves, and reflect integrity of knowledge, diversity and others, and contain open attributes. In addition to this, teaching material should have characteristics different from those when objective epistemology applies, so there is a need to analyze whether teaching material has those characteristics. For this, this study compared and analyzed <1. Three-Digit Numbers> which belongs to the domain of numbers and operations out of the units of mathematics(3) textbook of the 2009 revised curriculum for the first and second grade that first introduced story-telling, and <3. Understanding of Place Values> for the second grade of constructive math class used in the U.S.

  • As an empirical test of a model of giftedness with learning disabilities (Song & Porath, 2011), this paper investigated domain thoughts of gifted students without learning disabilities and gifted students with learning disabilities (GLD) in reading, writing, and math. Gifted students in each group were interviewed and the data were analyzed for domain thoughts. The results showed that the former group of gifted students exhibited domain thoughts in a more balanced manner, whereas GLD students showed large discrepancies between domain thoughts; they showed weak specific domain thoughts in contrast to strong other domain thoughts. They also showed ambivalent attitudes even in a domain activity; they presented positive and negative thoughts at the same time. With a comprehensive explanation of the differences between the two groups of gifted students through a cognitive mechanism presented in the model of GLD model, this paper provides new approaches for identification and education of gifted students and GLD students.

  • Bitcoin (BTC) is a cryptocurrency proposed by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009. Bitcoin makes its transactions with no central authorities. This decentralization is accomplished with its mining, which is an operation that makes people compete to solve math puzzles to include new transactions into block, and eventually block chains (ledger) of bitcoin. Because miners need to solve a complex puzzles, they need a lot of computing resources. In return for miners' resources, bitcoin network gives newly minted bitcoins as a reward to miners when they succeed in mining. To prevent inflation, the reward is halved every 4 years. For example, in 2009 block reward was 50 BTC, but today, the block reward is 12.5 BTC. On the other hands, exchange rate for bitcoin and Korean Won (KRW) changed drastically from 924,000 KRW/BTC (January 12th, 2017) to 16,103,306 KRW/BTC (December 10th, 2017), which made mining more attractive. However, there are no rigorous researches on the profitability of bitcoin mining. In this paper, we evaluate the profitability of bitcoin mining.

  • Although methods about teaching basic principles and skills of addition and subtraction is long traditional, view points of interpreting those algorithms and ways of introducing those calculating skills are various according to textbooks at each historical stage of elementary mathematics curriculum development in Korea. The 1st and 2nd stage shows didactic transpositions less systemic. In the 3rd and 4th stage, didactic devices, which were influenced by the new math, for help of understanding the principles of addition and subtraction muchly depends on mathematical and logical mechanism rather than psychological and intellectual structure of students who learn those algorithms. Relatively compromising and stable forms appear in the 5th and 6th stages. Didactic transpositions in the 7th stage focus on the formation of mathematical concepts by exploration activities rather than on the presentation of mathematical contents by text. Anyone who wishes to design an elementary mathematics textbooks based upon the constructive view should consider the suggestions derived from such transition.

  • The 18th century Joseon(朝鮮) science philosopher Hong Dae-Yong(洪大容, 1731-83) tried to create his own scientific system, while partially keeping the Eastern view of nature and accepting Western science and technology. Most of all, he confirmed that Western science and technology was based on mathematical principles and accurate observation and wrote a math book, [Juhaesuyong(籌解需用)]. Therefore, we have good reason to call him a mathematician. He produced so many achievements that he can be considered a natural scientist in the late Joseon era; he accepted the Eastern view of nature critically and sometimes refused it. He also suggested new and various scientific thoughts, including an infinite universe theory, on the basis of Western scientific thought. Hong Dae-Yong emphasized the importance of practice. He understood the principle of the Western Honcheonui(渾天儀) and manufactured an alarm clock with a craftsman's help. He was an excellent engineer and he set a personal observatory. Considering the level of scientific technology at that time, it is reasonable to regard Hong Dae-Yong as a 'scientific technologist in the 18th century Joseonera', well equipped as a mathematician, a natural scientist, and an engineer. In conclusion, it is with 'mathematical thinking, creative conception, and practical activities' that Hong Dae-Yong maintained throughout his life that we can set a guide to produce excellent Korean scientific technologists and engineers in the 21st century.

  • Although over - 600 students in Incheon has been participated in the gifted education programs under the colleges and Office of Education Department every year, it is reported that the number of teachers have insufficient teaching abilities in primary, advanced, and after-advanced gifted classes. The Gifted Education Research Institute in Incheon University introduced R&E activities for the improvement of teachers' abilities in science research and student guiding. Professors in science department conducted the R & E activities to select the research thesis. The professors and the guidance teachers decided the directions of the research, and the guidance teachers who learned from the professors taught 3-5 students to practice the research. Five professor-teacher-student research teams in math, physics, chemistry and biology conducted the research after school and during the vacation for 7 months. The results of the research were submitted to the journals of research activities and the result papers were presented to the seminar. On this research, the possibilities and the difficulties of the R&E activities based of the journals of research activities, oral presentation and the research results reports were analyzed with a purpose of improving the professionalism of the science gifted teachers. • This study aims to test effect of transfer learning program rather than students' transfer ability. For these purpose, firstly this study design transfer learning program to apply from 'rate concept' in learning math class to 'velocity concept' in science class. Subsequently, this study is to analyze whether this program affect on 'the rate concept understanding' and 'the mathematics learning attitude'. Followings are the findings from this study. First, transfer learning program affect on improving students' rate concept understanding. Moreover, 17 among 35 students' who stay in 'ratio level' move to 'internalized ratio level'. Second, besides transfer learning program is not only cause to change students' learning attitude, this program impact on changing their learning attitude positively. The study has an important implications in that it designed new learning program that students experience transfer and test its effect.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument measuring mathematics anxiety suitable for Korean High school students. In order to achieve this study purpose, the study was conducted according to the procedure of setting components of mathematics anxiety, developing questions, and verifying validity and reliability. First, in order to set the components of mathematic anxiety, previous studies on mathematic anxiety. Through this, six factors of mathematic anxiety were derived. Next, new questions were developed for each of the six constituent factors. The 122 questions were revised and supplemented through two content validity tests, and the final instrument for mathematics anxiety consisted of 49 questions of 6 factors. Finally, to verify the validity and reliability of the measurement instrument for mathematics anxiety, a survey was conducted on 1,848 students from 16 universities in Seoul and the metropolitan area. Next, a validity analysis was conducted with the 1,645 responses, excluding students who answered that there was no mathematics anxiety. As a result of exploratory factor analysis, 15 out of 49 questions were removed. Six factors were named individual characteristics, pressure on achievement, abstraction in mathematics, teaching and learning style, parental attitudes, and cumulative mathematics subjects. As a result of confirmatory factor analysis, the model fit was found to be appropriate, and the convergence validity and discriminant validity were found to be good.
