Objectives : The histrionic personality disorder(HPD) is characterized by a pattern of excessive emotion and attention-seeking behavior, including a seductive behavior. It is known that HPD is closely related to a somatization disorder. The somatization disorder is characterized with various physical symptoms that have no pathologic manifestation. This report is on a case of 55 years old woman with HPD, who has been suffering from various physical symptoms that are coincided with diagnostic criteria for somatization disorder by DSM-IV. Methods : The patient was treated with oriental medical treatments (acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping therapy, and herb-medication), hypnotic therapy, and emotional freedom techniques. The effects of treatment were measured by VAS. Results : Chest pain was improved by hypnotic therapy and oriental medical treatments. But the patient's pantalgia and abdominal discomfort were controlled effectively by emotional freedom techniques. Conclusions : This result suggests that EFT might be effective for the defensive and dependent somatization disorder patient with HPD.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Yeongkyekamjo-tang on patients with menopausal disorder. Methods : We recruited 3 patients with menopausal disorder, who have been suffering from palpitation and depression. In addition, the patients had been administrated Yeongkyekamjo-tang. The patients of menopausal disorder had been estimated with Kupperman's index, Beck's Depression Inventory, The Menopause Quiz of Argosy University, visual analogue scale and Heart rate variability. We measured the Kupperman's index, Beck's Depression Inventory and The Menopause Quiz of Argosy University for every seven days. The heart rate variability was estimated twice, before and after the treatment. Results : After the treatments, symptoms of menopausal disorder were decreased. Conclusions : This study suggests that Yeongkyekamjo-tang is significantly effective on patients with menopausal disorder as well as palpitation and depression.
Objectives : The oriental medicine Jangwonhwan originally described in the Korean medical text, DonguiBogam(amnesia chapter). Recently, a modified formula of Jangwonhwan(LMK02-Jangwonhwan), was shown to reduce $\beta$-amyloid deposition in the brain of Tg-APPswe/PS1dE9 mouse model for Alzheimer's disease. This experiment aimed to investigate the acute oral toxicity of LMK02 in SD rats by up-and-down procedure determinations. Methods : Quality control of tablet form of LMK02 was established by estimating indicative components, Ginsenoside Rg3 of Red Ginseng and Decursin of Angelicagigas Nakai. The toxicity of LMK02 was investigated in 6 week old, specific pathogen free(SPF), Sprageu-Dawley rats. 3 female rats received 5,000 mg/10 ml/kg of test substance and their death rate, clinical sings, weight changes and autopsy findings had been observed for 2 weeks. Results : Any specific symptoms or death were resulted in this experiment. No significant changes in rats' weight. No significant differences in atopsy. Conclusions : The minimum lethal dose(MLD) of LMK02 for female Sprauge-Dawley rats were more than 5,000mg/kg in this experiment.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of treatment with scalp acupunctures for children with learning disorders. Methods : For this study, we evaluated Korea standard progressive matrices test (K-SPM) on 24 children with learning disorders who visited Korean medical center neuropsychiatry outpatient clinic from July 2012 to January 2013. Scalp acupuncture, cognitive enhancement therapy and speech-language therapy were applied. All children were treated 2 times a week for 4 months and we compared K-SPM test scores before treatment and 30 times after the treatment. Results : 1) After the treatment, K-SPM test scores have increased significantly (p<0.05) and the number of children in grade 5 (<5%) have decreased from 14 to 6. 2) Comparing K-SPM test scores between two groups: one with medical history and the other without medical history, the scores in both groups have increased significantly (p<0.05). 3) We also divided the children into two groups according to age: under the age of 13 and over the age of 13, and compared K-SPM test scores. Although the scores in both groups have increased respectively, it is the scores of the former group (under the age of 13) that have increased significantly (p<0.05). Conclusions : The treatments with scalp acupunctures were shown to be an effective intervention when improving K-SPM test scores of children with learning disorders.

Objectives: Hwa-byung is a mental illness. It is also known as a Korean culture-related syndrome. In traditional Korean medicine, Sihogayonggolmoryeo-tang is used to treat Hwa-byung related neuropsychiatric symptoms. The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of Sihogayonggolmoryeo-tang on Hwa-byung. Methods: A multicenter, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study was performed for 160 patients with Hwa-byung. Patients were divided into a Sihogayonggolmoryeo-tang group and a placebo group. Treatment period was 8 weeks. Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAM-A), Likert scale for major symptoms of Hwa-byung, Hwa-byung Scale (HBS), Korean Beck Depression Inventory (K-BDI), Korean State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (K-STAI), Korean State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (K-STAXI), and Korean WHO Quality of Life Scale Abbreviated Version (WHOQOL-BREF) were used to evaluate the effect of Sihogayonggolmoryeo-tang on Hwa-byung. We also used an Instrument of Pattern Identification for Hwa-Byung to evaluate different responses for six patterns of patients. Results: Scores of all the measurements improved significantly for each group, showing no significant differences between the two groups. In the case of deficiency of both Qi and blood pattern, the Sihogayonggolmoryeo-tang group showed a significant decrease in the HAM-A score compared to the placebo group. Conclusions: The effect of Sihogayonggolmoryeo-tang on Hwa-byung did not exceed that of the placebo. Further studies involving more elaborate pattern identification are needed.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to experimentally assess the effects of Chengsimyeonjatanggagam extracts in the animal model regarding ADHD related symptoms and indicators. Methods: The experimental group was classified into the normal group (WKY rat) in 7, the control group (SHR rat) in 7, the low-concentration group of herbal medicines (SHR rat) in 7, and the high-concentration group of herbal medicines (SHR rat) in 7 by random sampling. The open field test was conducted three times on the 7th, 14th, and 21st days during the oral medication. After that, Y-maze test, intestinal permeability verification (L/M ratio), and Western blotting (CDK expression in the cerebral cortex) were performed in sequence. Results: The Chengsimyeonjatang-gagam extracts reduced the activity distance in the SHR rat at 21 days in the low and high concentration groups by the open field test. It also reduced the cross-action rate in the low and high concentration groups by the Y-maze test. And the low concentration group showed 52.3% decrease in the L/M ratio compared to the SHR group. Finally, the CDK5 protein significantly increased in the low and high concentration groups. Conclusions: This study suggests that the Chengsimyeonjatang-gagam extracts have potential to be used for the treatment of ADHD.

Objective : In posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), it is essential to evaluate the severity of trauma with a reliable instrument. The combat exposure scale (CES) is one of the most widely used measures for the combat-related trauma. The present study was conducted to test the reliability and validity of the Korean version of CES (CES-K). Methods : One hundred and forty-five male Korean veterans of the Vietnam War participated in this study. CES-K, the structured clinical interview for DSM-III-R (SCID), clinician administered PTSD scale (CAPS), and the Korean version life events checklist (LEC-K) were administered. Results : Cronbach's coefficient of CES-K was .85, and the test-retest reliability was .94. The mean [standard deviation (SD)] scores of CES-K were 20.4 (9.0) in the PTSD group and 12.0 (8.6) in the non-PTSD group (p<.001). CES-K showed a significant correlation with LEC-K (r=.31, p<.001) and CAPS (r=.52, p<.001). Only one factor was revealed by the factor analysis. Conclusion : CES-K showed good reliability and validity for assessing the severity of combat exposure. Further, it demonstrated comparable psychometric properties to the previous study. It is expected that CES-K will be a useful tool for evaluating the severity of combat exposure in Korea.
