  • In this study, we propose a neuro-genetic controller combined with a linear controller in parallel to improve the tracking performance of the Line of Sight(LOS) stabilization system and reject the effect of disturbances. A Genetic Algorithm(GA) is used to optimize weights of the neuro-genetic controller since this algorithm can search a global minimum without derivatives or other auxiliary knowledge. The LOS system is very complex and has limited measurable output data. Under these specific circumstances GA solves many problems that other training methods have. Computer simulation results show that the, proposed controller makes better tracking response and rejection of disturbance than a linear controller.

  • As a national river remediation project has been completed, this study has a special interest on the capabilities to predict water levels at various points of the Geum River. To be endowed with intelligent forecasting capabilities, the author formulate the neuro-genetic algorithm associated with the short-term water level prediction model. The results show that neuro-genetic algorithm has considerable potentials to be practically used for water level forecasting, revealing that (1) model optimization can be obtained easily and systematically, and (2) validity in predicting one- or two-day ahead water levels can be fully proved at various points.

  • This paper presents the development of intelligent performance management of computer communication networks for larger-scale integrated systems and the demonstration of its efficacy using computer simula- tion. The innermost core of the performance management is based on fuzzy set theory. This fuzzy perfor- mance manager has learning ability by using principles of neuro-fuzzy model, neuralnetwork, genetic algo- rithm(GA). Two types of performance managers are described in this paper. One is the Neuro-Fuzzy Per- formance Manager(NFPM) of which learning ability is based on the conventional gradient method, and the other is GA-based Neuro-Fuzzy Performance Manager(GNFPM)with its learning ability based on a genetic algorithm. These performance managers have been evaluated via discrete event simulation of a computer network.

  • In this work, a neuro-fuzzy inference system combined with the wavelet denoising, PCA (principal component analysis) and SPRT (sequential probability ratio test) methods is developed to detect the relevant sensor failure using other sensor signals. The wavelet denoising technique is applied to remove noise components in input signals into the neuro-fuzzy system The PCA is used to reduce the dimension of an input space without losing a significant amount of information. The PCA makes easy the selection of the input signals into the neuro-fuzzy system. Also, a lower dimensional input space usually reduces the time necessary to train a neuro-fuzzy system. The parameters of the neuro-fuzzy inference system which estimates the relevant sensor signal are optimized by a genetic algorithm and a least-squares algorithm. The residuals between the estimated signals and the measured signals are used to detect whether the sensors are failed or not. The SPRT is used in this failure detection algorithm. The proposed sensor-monitoring algorithm was verified through applications to the pressurizer water level and the hot-leg flowrate sensors in pressurized water reactors.

  • It has been shown that the structure identification of a neuro-fuzzy model improves their accuracy performances in a various modeling problems. In this paper, we claim that the structure identification of a neuro-fuzzy model can also reduce the degree of inconsistency of its fuzzy rulebase. Thus, the resulting neuro-fuzzy model serves as more like a structured knowledge representation scheme. For this, we briefly review a structure identification method of a neuro-fuzzy model and propose a systematic method to measure inconsistency of a fuzzy rulebase. The proposed method is applied to problems or fuzzy system reproduction and nonlinear system modeling in order to validate our claim.

  • It has been established that a crack has an important effect on the dynamic behavior of a structure. This effect depends mainly on the location and depth of the crack. To identify the location and depth of a crack in a structure, a method is presented in this paper which uses hybrid neuro-genetic technique. Feed-forward multilayer neural networks trained by back-propagation are used to learn the input)the location and dept of a crack)-output(the structural eigenfrequencies) relation of the structural system. With this neural network and genetic algorithm, it is possible to formulate the inverse problem. Neural network training algorithm is the back propagation algorithm with the momentum method to attain stable convergence in the training process and with the adaptive learning rate method to speed up convergence. Finally, genetic algorithm is used to fine the minimum square error.

  • In this paper, an effective method for selecting significant input variables in building ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System) for nonlinear system modeling is proposed. Dominant inputs in a nonlinear system identification process are extracted by evaluating the performance index and they are applied to ANFIS. The availability of our proposed model is verified with the Box and Jenkins gas furnace data. The comparisons with other methods are also given in this paper to show our proposed method is superior to other models.

  • In this paper, union-based rule antecedent neuro-fuzzy controller, which can guarantee a parsimonious knowledge base with reduced number of rules, is proposed. The proposed neuro-fuzzy controller allows union operation of input fuzzy sets in the antecedents to cover bigger input domain compared with the complete structure rule which consists of AND combination of all input variables in its premise. To construct the proposed neuro-fuzzy controller, we consider the multiple-term unified logic processor (MULP) which consists of OR and AND fuzzy neurons. The fuzzy neurons exhibit learning abilities as they come with a collection of adjustable connection weights. In the development stage, the genetic algorithm (GA) constructs a Boolean skeleton of the proposed neuro-fuzzy controller, while the stochastic reinforcement learning refines the binary connections of the GA-optimized controller for further improvement of the performance index. An inverted pendulum system is considered to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method by simulation and experiment.

  • This paper introduces a novel neuro-fuzzy system based on the polynomial fuzzy neural network(PFNN) architecture. The PFNN consists of a set of if-then rules with appropriate membership functions whose parameters are optimized via a hybrid genetic algorithm. A polynomial neural network is employed in the defuzzification scheme to improve output performance and to select appropriate rules. A performance criterion for model selection, based on the Group Method of DAta Handling is defined to overcome the overfitting problem in the modeling procedure. The hybrid genetic optimization method, which combines a genetic algorithm and the Simplex method, is developed to increase performance even if the length of a chromosome is reduced. A novel coding scheme is presented to describe fuzzy systems for a dynamic search rang in th GA. For a performance assessment of the PFNN inference system, three well-known problems are used for comparison with other methods. The results of these comparisons show that the PFNN inference system outperforms the other methods while it exhibits exceptional robustness characteristics.
