Electric load forecasting is essential for effective power system planning and operation. Complex and nonlinear relationships exist between the electric loads and their exogenous factors. In addition, time-series load data has non-stationary characteristics, such as trend, seasonality and anomalous day effects, making it difficult to predict the future loads. This paper proposes a locally-weighted polynomial neural network (LWPNN), which is a combination of a polynomial neural network (PNN) and locally-weighted regression (LWR) for daily shortterm peak load forecasting. Model over-fitting problems can be prevented effectively because PNN has an automatic structure identification mechanism for nonlinear system modeling. LWR applied to optimize the regression coefficients of LWPNN only uses the locally-weighted learning data points located in the neighborhood of the current query point instead of using all data points. LWPNN is very effective and suitable for predicting an electric load series with nonlinear and non-stationary characteristics. To confirm the effectiveness, the proposed LWPNN, standard PNN, support vector regression and artificial neural network are applied to a real world daily peak load dataset in Korea. The proposed LWPNN shows significantly good prediction accuracy compared to the other methods.

The high temperature deformation behavior of AZ 31 Mg alloy was investigated by designing a back propagation neural network that uses a gradient descent-learning algorithm. A neural network modeling is an intelligent technique that can solve non-linear and complex problems by learning from the samples. Therefore, some experimental data have been firstly obtained from continuous compression tests performed on a thermo-mechanical simulator over a range of temperatures $(250-500^{\circ}C)$ with strain rates of $0.0001-100s^{-1}$ and true strains of 0.1 to 0.6. The inputs for neural network model are strain, strain rate, and temperature and the output is flow stress. It was found that the trained model could well predict the flow stress for some experimental data that have not been used in the training. Workability of a material can be evaluated by means of power dissipation map with respect to strain, strain rate and temperature. Power dissipation map was constructed using the flow stress predicted from the neural network model at finer Intervals of strain, strain rates and subsequently processing maps were developed for hot working processes for AZ 31 Mg alloy. The safe domains of hot working of AZ 31 Mg alloy were identified and validated through microstructural investigations.

Crack sealing automation machines' have been continually developed since the early 1990's because of the effectiveness of crack sealing that would be able to improve safety, quality and productivity. It has been considered challenging problem to detect crack network in pavement which includes noise (oil marks, skid marks, previously sealed cracks and inherent noise). It is required to develop crack network mapping and modeling algorithm in order to accurately inject sealant along to the middle of cut crack network. The primary objective of this study is to propose a crack network mapping and modeling algorithm using neural network for improving the accuracy of the algorithm used in the APCS. It is anticipated that the effective use of the proposed algorithms would be able to reduce error rate in image processing for detecting, mapping and modeling crack network as well as improving quality and productivity compared to existing vision algorithms.

In this paper, we introduce a new soft computing technique that dwells on the ideas of combining fuzzy rules in a fuzzy system with polynomial neural networks (PNN). The PNN is a flexible neural architecture whose structure is developed through the modeling process. Unfortunately, the PNN has a fatal drawback in that it cannot be constructed for nonlinear systems with only a small amount of input variables. To overcome this limitation in the conventional PNN, we employed one of three principal soft computing components such as a fuzzy system. As such, a space of input variables is partitioned into several subspaces by the fuzzy system and these subspaces are utilized as new input variables to the PNN architecture. The proposed soft computing technique is achieved by merging the fuzzy system and the PNN into one unified framework. As a result, we can find a workable synergistic environment and the main characteristics of the two modeling techniques are harmonized. Thus, the proposed method alleviates the problems of PNN while providing superb performance. Identification results of the three-input nonlinear static function and nonlinear system with two inputs will be demonstrated to demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach.
In this work, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was used to model the dynamic behavior of ferromagnetic hysteresis derived from performing the mean-field analysis on the Ising model. The effect of field parameters and system structure (via coordination number) on dynamic critical points was elucidated. The Ising magnetization equation was drawn from mean-field picture where the steady hysteresis loops were extracted, and series of the dynamic critical points for constructing dynamic phase-diagram were depicted. From the dynamic critical points, the field parameters and the coordination number were treated as inputs whereas the dynamic critical temperature was considered as the output of the ANN. The input-output datasets were divided into training, validating and testing datasets. The number of neurons in hidden layer was varied in structuring ANN network with highest accuracy. The network was then used to predict dynamic critical points of the untrained input. The predicted and the targeted outputs were found to match well over an extensive range even for systems with different structures and field parameters. This therefore confirms the ANN capabilities and indicates the ANN ability in modeling the ferromagnetic dynamic hysteresis behavior for establishing the dynamic-phase-diagram.
For higher component density per chip, it is necessary to identify and control the semiconductor manufacturing process more stringently. Recently, neural networks have been identified as one of the most promising techniques for modeling and control of complicated processes such as plasma etching process. Since wafer states after each run using identical recipe may differ from each other, conventional neural network models utilizing input factors only cannot represent the actual state of process and equipment. In this paper, in addition to the input factors of the recipe, real-time tool data are utilized for modeling of 64M DRAM s-poly plasma etching process to reflect the actual state of process and equipment. For real-time tool data, we collect optical emission spectroscopy (OES) data. Through principal component analysis (PCA), we extract principal components from entire OES data. And then these principal components are included to input parameters of neural network model. Finally neural network model is trained using feed forward error back propagation (FFEBP) algorithm. As a results, simulation results exhibit good wafer state prediction capability after plasma etching process.
A robust position control with the bound function of neural network structure is proposed for uncertain robot manipulators. The uncertain factors come from imperfect knowledge of system parameters, payload change, friction, external disturbance, and etc. Therefore, uncertainties are often nonlinear and time-varying. The neural network structure presents the bound function and does not need the concave property of the bound function. The robust approach is to solve this problem as uncertainties are included in a model and the controller can achieve the desired properties in spite of the imperfect modeling. Simulation is performed to validate this law for four-axis SCARA type robot manipulator.
In a high precision vertical machining center, the estimation of cutting forces is important for many reasons such as prediction of chatter vibration, surface roughness and so on. The cutting forces are difficult to predict because they are very complex and time variant. In order to predict the cutting forces of end-milling processes for various cutting conditions, their mathematical model is important and the model is based on chip load, cutting geometry, and the relationship between cutting forces and chip loads. Specific cutting force coefficients of the model have been obtained as interpolation function types by averaging forces of cutting tests. In this paper the coefficients are obtained by neural network and the results of the conventional method and those of the proposed method are compared. The results show that the neural network method gives more correct values than the function type and that in the learning stage as the omitted number of experimental data increase the average errors increase as well.

The automation of hot rolling process requires the developments of several mathematical models for simulation and quantitative description of the industrial operations involved in order to achieve the continuously increasing productivity, flexibility and quality(dimensional accuracy, mechanical properties and surface properties). The mathematical modeling of hot rolling process has long been recognized to be a desirable approach to investigate rolling operating practice and design of mill requirement. To achieve this objectives, a new teaming method with neural network to improve the accuracy of rolling force prediction in hot rolling mill is developed. Also, Genetic Algorithm(GA) is applied to select the optimal structure of the neural network and compared with that of engineers experience. It is shown from this research that both structure selection methods can lead to similar results.

The paper used to the Neral Netwok for a forecasting conservation system A neural network is a powerful data modeling tool that is able to capture and represent complex input/output relationships. The motivation for the development of neural network technology stemmed from the desire to develop an artificial system that could perform "intelligent" tasks similar to those performed by the human brain. The true power and advantage of neural network lies in their ability to represent both linear and non-linear relationships and in their ability to learn these relationships directly from the data being modeled. Form results of this study, the Neral Netwok is will play an important role for insulation diagnosis system of real site GIS and power equipment using $SF_6$ gas.
