  • When a new transmission line is planned to construct, the system voltage and the conductor size of the transmission line should be decided by both economical and technical point of view. This paper presents a methodology to determine the optimal voltage for upgrading the transmission system voltage of existing the extra high voltage grid network by meeting the requirements of the transmission cost minimization as well as technical constraints of thermal limit and stability limit in the transmission line. As a case study, calculated are optimal voltages versus distance and capacity of a practically applicable transmission line with 4 bundles 2 circuits. By this study 400kV was selected as the next higher voltage for the existing 220kV Libyan grid network.

  • Until now some countries including South Korea have made big progress and many efforts in the development of high temperature superconductor (HTS) power equipments. Especially, HTS Cable and superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) are the strongest candidates among them from the viewpoint of applying to real grid. In South Korea, HTS cable and SFCL have been installed in test fields and tested successfully at Gochang PT Center of KEPCO. In order to meet practical requirements and be feasible in real grid, a demonstration project for HTS cable and SFCL systems, called GENI(green superconducting electric power network at Icheon substation) project, has been initiated to install 23kV HTS cable and SFCL systems in a utility network in South Korea since 2008. Namely, it says the first demonstration project for the application HTS system to real smart grid in South Korea. This paper presents the design and the application plan of the 22.9kV HTS cable and SFCL in 154kV Icheon substation in South Korea with the viewpoint of applying in Smat Grid.

  • This paper studies the collective communication in the grid computing environment, which is characterized by the combination of heterogeneous networks as well as uneven, long communication delay. Efficient collective communication requires communication schedule, which in turn requires network information. When the network information is not accurate or network faults occur, the performance of collective communication can be markedly degraded. This paper proposes TTCC(Two-Tree Collective Communication) for scheduling collective communication in the grid. It Provides an efficient and reliable schedule even In this unfavorable network condition by maintaining two disjoint communication trees. Benefits of the proposed method are manifested via simulation, where the performance degradation with TTCC is much slower than those using conventional scheduling algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose a basic virtual grid-based routing algorithm in order to devise an efficient routing method in ad hoc networks using the location information of nodes, energy level, etc. A packet is forwarded to the X-axis direction at first based on the location information of a destination node, and then it is forwarded to the Y-axis direction as its location becomes close to the destination from the viewpoint of the X-axis. Due to the selection of next hop nodes to deliver a packet from a certain node to a destination node, we can regard the whole network as a virtual grid network. The proposed routing algorithm determines routing paths using the local information such as the location information of a destination and its neighbor nodes. Thus, the routing path setup is achieved locally, by which we can expect reduction in network traffics and routing delays to a destination. To evaluate the performance of the proposed routing algorithm, we used the network simulator ns2 and compared its network throughput with that of an existing routing algorithm.

  • Distributed generation (DG) in the future will play an important role in the electricity supply systems, in wich can provide DG capacity from a few hundred kW to tens of MW. However, it is connected to the local power grid, DG will have certain influence on the power quality of the power grid. One of the most significant effects is that they will change the configuration of the local power grid as well as affecting the operation mode of the grid. This paper presents a method of finding the optimal open loop, analyzing and selecting the appropriate mode of operation to reduce power losses of power distribution networks that includes DG.

  • In this paper, high-speed Hybrid MAC (Medium Access Control layer) implementation suitable for smart grid applications is researched. MB-OFDM (Multi-Band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is considered for high-speed communication method in smart grid application. In this paper, the MAC adopts the distributed network managing method. Also, the MB-OFDM merit of high-speed transfer rate of up to 480Mbps must be supported. Hence, this paper presents an efficient hardware-software integration (co-design) method in order to realize a high- speed transmission, and a realizing method of distribution network. Finally, MAC performance and reliability based on MB-OFDM PHY (PHYsical layer) are confirmed through simulation and emulation.

  • Photovoltaic systems provide a reliable green energy solution. The sustainability and low-maintenance of Photovoltaic systems motivate the integration of Photovoltaic systems into the electrical grid and further contribute to a greener environment, as the system does not cause any pollution or emissions. Developing methodologies based on machine learning techniques to assist in reducing the burden of studies related to integrating Photovoltaic systems into the electric grid are of interest. This research aims to develop a methodology based on a unsupervised machine learning algorithm that can reduce the burden of extensive studies and simulations related to the integration of Photovoltaic systems into the electrical grid.

  • Recently, a number of foreign electric power companies including domestic Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) have actively engaged in the construction of a power grid with the concept of a smart grid. The Smart grid is a technology that increases the efficiency of the power by converging the information network with the power grid. It can maximize the energy efficiency through the two-way communication between the utility and the consumer. However, as the power grid converges with the information and communication network, security threats are increasing more than existing power grids. Due to the nature of the power grid, the damage caused by security threats is not only personal privacy but also economic loss of society. So smart grid becomes the target of hackers. In this paper, we discuss security vulnerabilities of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), which is a core technology of smart grid construction, and the corresponding security technologies to prevent security damage of smart grid.

  • We present the concept of applying Wireless Mesh Networking (WMN) technology into Smart Grid, which is recently rising as a potential technology in various areas thanks to its advantages such as low installation costs, high scalability, and high flexibility. Smart Grid is an intelligent, next-generation electrical power network that can maximize energy efficiency by monitoring utility information in real-time and controlling the flow of electricity with IT communications technology converged to the existing power grid. WMNs must be designed for Smart Grid communication systems considering not only the high level of reliability, QoS support and mass-data treatment but also the properties of the traditional power grid. In addition, it is essential to design techniques based on international standards to support interoperability and scalability. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of IEEE 802.11s based Smart Grid Mesh Networks by conducting preliminary simulation studies with the ns-3 simulator. We also outline some challenging issues that should be reviewed when considering WMNs as the candidate for Smart Grid communication infrastructure.
