  • Most of the existing researches on systemwide optimization of generator maintenance scheduling do not consider the equivalent operating hours(EOHs) mainly due to the difficulties of calculating the EOHs of the CCGTs in the large scale system. In order to estimate the EOHs not only the operating hours but also the number of start-up/shutdown during the planning period should be estimated, which requires the mathematical model to incorporate the economic dispatch model and unit commitment model. The model is inherently modelled as a large scale mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem and the computation time increases exponentially and intractable as the system size grows. To make the problem tractable, this paper proposes an EOH calculation based on demand grouping by K-means clustering algorithm. Network congestion is also considered in order to improve the accuracy of EOH calculation. This proposed method is applied to the actual Korean electricity market and compared to other existing methods.

  • A crack identification method using an equivalent bending stiffness for cracked beam and committee of neural networks is presented. The equivalent bending stiffness is constructed based on an energy method for a straight thin-walled pipe, which has a through-the-thickness crack, subjected to bending. Several numerical analysis for a steel cantilever pipe using the equivalent bending stiffness are carried out to extract the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the cracked beam. The extracted modal properties are used in constructing a training patterns of a neural network. The input to the neural network consists of the modal properties and the output is composed of the crack location and size. Multiple neural networks are constructed and each individual network is trained independently with different initial synaptic weights. Then, the estimated crack locations and sizes from different neural networks are averaged. Experimental crack detection is carried out for 3 damage cases using the proposed method, and the identified crack locations and sizes agree reasonably well with the exact values.

  • The effects of joint density and size distribution on the hydrogeologic characteristics of jointed rock masses are addressed through numerical experiments based on the 2-D DFN (discrete fracture network) fluid flow analysis. Using two joint sets, a total of 51 2-D joint network system were generated with various joint density and size distribution. Twelve fluid flow directions were chosen every $30^{\circ}$ starting at $0^{\circ}$, and total of 612 $20m{\times}20m$ DFN blocks were prepared to calculate the directional block conductivity. Also, the theoretical block conductivity, principal conductivity tensor and average block conductivity for each generated joint network system were determined. The directional block conductivity and chance for the equivalent continuum behavior of the 2-D DFN system were found to increase with the increase of joint density or size distribution. However, the anisotropy of block hydraulic conductivity increases with the increase of density discrepancy between the joint sets, and the chance for the equivalent continuum behavior were found to decrease. The smaller the intersection angle of the two joint sets, the more the equivalent continuum behavior were affected by the change of joint density and size distribution. Even though the intersection angle is small enough that it is difficult to have equivalent continuum behavior, the chance for anisotropic equivalent continuum behavior increases as joint density or size distribution increases.

  • The complexity of modern power systems often makes it impractical to model it in its entirety for electromagnetic transient studies. Therefore areas outside the immediate area of interest must be represented by some form of Frequency Dependent Network Equivalent (FDNE). The advantage of using z-domain fitting is that it can be directly implemented in a digital simulation program without any loss of accuracy. Fitting in the s-domain always requires "discretizing" a continuous system and the inherent approximations. This paper presents z-domain rational function formulation and demonstrates the use of it for the assessment of the transient response of the Lower South Island of New Zealand. Moreover by using a well publicized test system and providing complete information on the developed FDNE coefficients other researchers easily benchmark their work against this.

  • In electromagnetic transient analysis, complex transmission system should be modelled in detail. But in large system, this full representation of power transmission system has a big burden in many sides such as computation time, modelling efforts, etc. It is very required, therefore, in electromagnetic transients studies to represent parts of a complete system in a reduced or an equivalent form. This paper develops the method from which system equivalents may be derived. The suggested method is of an essentially transient form, and allows travelling wave interaction between the equivalent and explicit transmission network to be modelled.

  • This paper describes an equivalent circuit modeling of 4-port connector system. A coupled transmission line was designed and fabricated, mimicking a 4-port connector system, and then S-parameters were measured using 4 port VNA (Vector Network Analyzer). The S-parameters from measurement and from Full-wave simulator coincided quite nice. By using these S parameters, an equivalent circuit parameters for a 4-port system was obtained. The time domain response from the equivalent circuit model matched to the signals, which was measured using TDR(Time Domain Reflectometry) meter. We were also convinced that there should be enough bandwidth to get a meaningful time domain result from Fourier inverse transformation of the S parameters. In addition, we applied the conversion algorithm to the 4-port connector system, which calculates the S-parameters of a 4 port system using the data from a 2-port VNA with the other ports open. Comparison of the two data, one from measurement and the other one from the conversion algorithm, was made in this manuscript.

  • This paper presents the procedure to construct equivalent model of large power system based on nonlinear time simulation responses. It consists of coherency identification, generator aggregation and network reduction. Coherency index that can be directly implemented to this procedure is proposed. Generator aggregation based on detailed model is performed. This procedure can be used to construct equivalent model in PSS/E. It is also possible to reduce the large power system directly from the nonlinear time responses. This procedure is applied to the transient stability analysis of Korea power system that now experiences rapid changes. The equivalent model is compared with the original model in its size, accuracy, speed and performance. This paper shows that the developed equivalent model is a good estimate of the original system.

  • A three-dimensional discrete fracture network model was developed in order to simulate the hydraulic characteristics of a granitic rock mass at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) Underground Research Tunnel (KURT). The model used a three-dimensional discrete fracture network (DFN), assuming a correlation between the length and aperture of the fractures, and a trapezoid flow path in the fractures. These assumptions that previous studies have not considered could make the developed model more practical and reasonable. The geologic and hydraulic data of the fractures were obtained in the rock mass at the KURT. Then, these data were applied to the developed fracture discrete network model. The model was applied in estimating the representative elementary volume (REV), the equivalent hydraulic conductivity tensors, and the amount of groundwater inflow into the tunnel. The developed discrete fracture network model can determine the REV size for the rock mass with respect to the hydraulic behavior and estimate the groundwater flow into the tunnel at the KURT. Therefore, the assumptions that the fracture length is correlated to the fracture aperture and the flow in a fracture occurs in a trapezoid shape appear to be effective in the DFN analysis used to estimate the hydraulic behavior of the fractured rock mass.

  • This research proposes a nonlinear sliding mode control. The sliding mode control is designed according to Lyapunov function. The equivalent control term is estimated by neural network. To estimate the unknown part in the control law in on-line fashion, A recurrent neural network is given as on-line estimator. The stability of the control system is guaranteed owing to the on-line learning ability of the recurrent neural network. It is certificated through simulation results to be applied to nonlinear system that the function approximation and the proposed control scheme is very effective.

  • The CSS(Chirp Spread Spectrum) technology is used for developing various WPAN(Wireless Personal Area Network) application fields in general, and it can be adapted to implement localization systems especially using SDS-TWR(Symmetric Double Sided - Two Way Ranging). But the ranging errors are occurred in many practical applications due to some interferences by some experiments. Thus, the compensation algorithm for localization is required for developing localization applications. The suggested compensation algorithm that is named KF_EDR(Kalman Filter and Equivalent Distance Rate) for localization in order to reduce the ranging errors is suggested in this paper. The KF_EDR compensation algorithm for localization is mainly composed of the AEDR(Algorithm of Equivalent Distance Rate) and the Kalman Filter. It is confirmed that the improved error ratio of the KF_EDR are 10.5% and 4.2% compared with the AEDR algorithm in lobby and stadium. From the results, it is analyzed that the KF_EDR can be widely used for some localization system in ubiquitous society.
