  • This study introduced a post-tensioned precast concrete system that was developed and designed to improve the performance of joints by post-tensioning. Full-scaled specimens were tested to investigate flexural performances at the negative moment region, where the test variables were the presence of slabs, tendon types, and post-tensioned lengths. A specimen with slabs exhibited significantly higher stiffness and strength values than a specimen without slabs. Thus, it would be reasonable to consider the effects of a slab on the flexural strength for an economical design. A specimen with unbonded mono-tendons had slightly lower initial stiffness and flexural strength values than a specimen with bonded multi-tendons but showed greater flexural strength than the value specified in the design codes. The post-tensioned length was found to have no significant impact on the flexural behavior of the proposed post-tensioned precast concrete system. In addition, a finite element analysis was conducted on the proposed post-tensioned precast concrete system, and the tests and analysis results were compared in detail.

  • This paper deals with a novel shunt circuit, which is capable of suppressing multimode vibration amplitudes by using a pair of piezoceramic patches. In order to describe the characteristic behaviors of a piezoelectric damper connected with a series and a parallel resistor-negative capacitor branch circuit, the stiffness ratio and loss factor with respect to the non-dimensional frequency are considered. The mechanism of the shunt damper is also described by considering a shunt voltage constrained by shunt impedance. To obtain a guideline model of the piezo/beam system with a negative capacitive shunting, the governing equations of motion are derived through the Hamilton's principle and a piezo sensor equation as well as a shunt-damping matrix is developed. The theoretical analysis shows that the piezo/beam system combined with a series and a parallel resistor-negative capacitor branch circuit developed in this study can significantly reduce the multiple-mode vibration amplitudes over the whole structural frequency range.

  • An airless tire has advantages over the conventional pneumatic tire in terms of flat proof and maintenance free. According to the recently disclosed inventions on the airless tire, non-pneumatic tire (NPT) consists of the flexible polygon spokes. Considering the NPT structure, the spokes undergo the tension-compression cyclic loading while the tire rolls. Therefore the spokes of NPT are required to have both stiffness and resilience under the cyclic tensile-compressible loading. In general, if a material has a high stiffness, it shows a low elastic strain limit. In this paper, using the auxetic honeycomb structure with negative poissons's ratio, the spokes of NPT tire are designed to have both stiffness and resilience. Finite element based numerical simulation of the contact pressure of a NPT is carried out with ABAQUS.

  • In this study, strength reduction factors and inelastic displacement ratios are investigated for SDOF systems with period range of 0.1-3.0 s considering soil structure interaction for earthquake motions recorded on soft soil. The effect of stiffness degradation on strength reduction factors and inelastic displacement ratios is investigated. The modified-Clough model is used to represent structures that exhibit significant stiffness degradation when subjected to reverse cyclic loading and the elastoplastic model is used to represent non-degrading structures. The effect of negative strain - hardening on the inelastic displacement and strength of structures is also investigated. Soil structure interacting systems are modeled and analyzed with effective period, effective damping and effective ductility values differing from fixed-base case. For inelastic time history analyses, Newmark method for step by step time integration was adapted in an in-house computer program. New equations are proposed for strength reduction factor and inelastic displacement ratio of interacting system as a function of structural period($\tilde{T}$, T) ductility (${\mu}$) and period lengthening ratio ($\tilde{T}$/T).

  • The stiffness of slab concrete section is not considered as effective in the existing method of construction for continued steel box girder bridge. Using lifting system and filled concrete, it is possible to make stiffness of slab concrete section effective and improve stiffness of negative moment section. It was proved that the stress of upper flange in positive moment is significantly lower than case of existing method through the stress comparison. This stress difference made possible to rearrange flange thickness and as the result of this rearrangement, the amount of steel and height of girder can be reduced up to 13.23% and 11.5%.

  • Steel shear walls are used to strengthen steel and concrete structures. One such system is Partial Attached Steel Shear Walls (PASSW), which are only connected to frame beams. This system offers both structural and architectural advantages. This study first calibrated the numerical model of RC frames with and without PASSW using an experimental sample. The seismic performance of the RC frame was evaluated by 30 non-linear static analyses, which considered stiffness, ductility, lateral strength, and energy dissipation, to investigate the effect of PASSW width and column axial load. Based on numerical results and a curve fitting technique, a lateral stiffness equation was developed for frames equipped with PASSW. The effect of the shear wall location on the concrete frame was evaluated through eight analyses. Nonlinear dynamic analysis was performed to investigate the effect of the shear wall on maximum frame displacement using three earthquake records. The results revealed that if PASSW is designed with appropriate stiffness, it can increase the energy dissipation and ductility of the frame by 2 and 1.2 times, respectively. The stiffness and strength of the frame are greatly influenced by PASSW, while axial force has the most significant negative impact on energy dissipation. Furthermore, the location of PASSW does not affect the frame's behavior, and it is possible to have large openings in the frame bay.

  • Composite beams are generally known to possess higher flexural stiffness and strength under the positive bending moments than the normal steel beams. However the these beams also exhibit large differences in flexural stiffness and strength when both positive and negative bending moments are applied. As observed during the 1995 Kobe Earthquake, these beams tend to be fractured on the bottom flanges under repeated cyclic loadings. The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate the composite beam detail, which is able to effectively resist the seismic loadings. The proposed system is composed of the slit on concrete slab around column. A limited experimental program was designed and conducted to investigate the hysteretic behavior of the proposed composite beam system. From the experimental data obtained from the testing of three specimens, the proposed composite beam detail is found to possess large beam rotation than normal steel beams.

  • Hybrid Prestressed Precast Concrete System (HPPC system) is a newly developed frame system that can improve the performance of precast concrete (PC) joints by post-tensioning. In particular, the details proposed in this study can reduce the lifting weight of the PC members and eliminate problems caused by cracks in the joints that occur under service loads. This study performed an evaluation on the negative moment performance of full-scaled HPPC girders. The test specimens were cast with or without slabs, with bonded or unbonded tendons, and had different post-tensioned lengths in tensile section. The test results showed that the specimens with slabs had significantly higher stiffness and strength than those without slabs. There were no differences in the flexural behavior between those with bonded or unbonded tendons, and between those with short or long post-tensioned lengths in the negative moment region.
