A Case Report of Glancing Up Motor Tic Disorder Managed by Temporomandibular Joint Balancing Therapy with Korean Medicine Treatment (위로 치켜뜨는 운동 틱 장애 환자에 대해 턱관절균형요법을 병행한 한방치료 치험 1례)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Korean medical treatment with Temporomandibular Joint Balancing Therapy (TBT) on Tic disorder patient who often glancing up when feels nerves, frightened or tired. Methods: In this study, Tic disorder patient was treated to △△ Korean medicine Hospital from June 12nd, 2022 to July 26th, 2023 by outpatient way. During the clinic period, the patient was treated by Korean medical treatment (acupuncture, cupping, herb medicine), especially using TBT. YGTSS (Yale Global Tic Severity Scale), NDI (Neck Disability Index) and VAS were used for measuring the Tic disorder and neck pain. Results: After treatment for 46 days, the YGTSS showed a decrease from 17 to 3, the VAS associated with Tic disorder also decreased from 6 to 1 and NDI associated with neck pain decreased from 7 to 4. Conclusions: These results showed that Korean medical treatment especially using TBT may have an effect on reducing symptoms of Tic disorder and neck pain. But the further researches are needed.

The Effects of Miniscalpel Acupuncture on Cervicogenic Headache: A report of three cases

  • Objectives : This study examined the effects of miniscalpel acupuncture (MA) in three patients with cervicogenic headache. Methods : Patients were treated with MA, which was performed once per week for three weeks. A headache score, visual analogue scale (VAS), and neck disability index (NDI) were used for the evaluation of treatment effects. Results : In cases 1, 2, and 3, the headache score decreased from 4 to 1, 3 to 0, and 3 to 1, respectively. The VAS score decreased from 8.5 to 1.9, 5 to 0.4, and 5.3 to 2 in cases 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The NDI score decreased from 28 to 4, 50 to 4, and 38 to 16 in cases 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Conclusion : MA appears to be effective for the treatment of cervicogenic headache. Further data should be collected and a comparative study using other treatment methods should be performed.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the effect of spinal decompression with Korean medicine treatment on the herniation of an intervertebral disc (HIVD) in a patient after fusion surgery of a cervical segment. Methods : A single patient was treated with spinal decompression, acupuncture, pharmacoacupuncture, and herbal medication. We measured the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), Neck Disability Index (NDI), European Quality of Life-5 Dimension (EQ-5D), Cervical Range of Motion (cervical ROM) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) score to evaluate the treatment effects. Results : The patient's post neck pain & pain in both arms improved significantly as suggested by the scores on the NRS, NDI, EQ5D, cervical ROM and BDI. Conclusions : Thus, spinal decompression, including Korean medicine treatment, could be taken into consideration for HIVD patients after fusion surgery.

Case Series: Three Patients with Cervical Vertigo Treated with Hwangryunhaedok-Tang Pharmacupuncture (경추부 압통점의 황련해독탕 약침치료를 통한 경추성 어지럼증 환자 호전 치험 3례)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this case report was to evaluate the effectiveness of Hwangryunhaedok-tang pharmacupuncture on three patients diagnosed as cervical vertigo. Methods: Three patients were diagnosed as cervical vertigo with cervical sprain, resulting from an alteration of the neck proprioceptive afferents of the upper cervical spine. Hwangryunhaedok-tang pharmacoacupuncture was injected in the patients once daily for 10 days. The symptom change of dizziness was checked daily before and after treatment by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score. The cervical pain and patient satisfaction were checked by the NRS (Numerical Rating Scale), NDI (Neck Disability Index), and the EQ-5D (EuroQol-Five Dimensions). Results: After the treatment, there was significant decrease in the value of the VAS score, measurement of dizziness, as well as the value of the NRS, NDI, a measure of pain. Also, the life quality measured by the EQ-5D improved. Conclusions: The results indicated that the Hwangryunhaedok-tang pharmacupuncture may have an effect on cervical vertigo with cervical pain.

Consumptive Disease and Chronic Fatigue Improved by Nokyonggunbi-tang and Other Korean Medical Treatments: A Case Report (녹용건비탕을 비롯한 한방치료로 호전된 허로 환자 1례)

  • Objective: This study investigated the efficacy of using Nokyonggunbi-tang and other Korean medical treatments for a patient with consumptive disease and chronic fatigue. Methods: A 59-year-old female patient with fatigue, headache, dizziness, and neck pain due to consumptive disease and chronic fatigue was treated with herbal medicine (Nokyonggunbi-tang), together with acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, cupping, and chuna manual therapy, for 22 days. The treatment effects on the pain were evaluated using the scores for the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), European Quality of Life Five Dimensions (EQ-5d) Scale, Neck Disability Index (NDI), and Numerical Rating Scale (NRS). Results: Following treatment, the patient showed a decrease in the FSS, NDI, and NRS scores and an improvement in the EQ-5d score. Conclusions: Nokyonggunbi-tang and Korean medical treatment significantly improved fatigue symptoms in a patient with no substrate disease.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the efficacy of Korean medical treatment for a headache (suspected CPSP) patient with a history of cerebral infarction. Methods: We treated the patient using Korean medical treatments (herbal medicines-Kamiseokyong-tang, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and chuna). The treatments were measured using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and the Neck Disability Index (NDI) for headache and post neck pain. General health status was evaluated using the European Quality of Life Five Dimensions (EQ-5d) Scale. Results: We observed improvements in the NRS, NDI, and EQ-5d scores after the treatments. Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean medicine may effectively treat headaches (suspected CPSP) with accompanying cerebral infarction.

A Case Report of Tension Headache Treated with Yanghyeolgeopung-tang (양혈거풍탕(養血祛風湯)을 포함한 한의치료로 호전된 긴장형 두통 환자의 치험 1례)

  • Objectives: This study reports the effects of Korean medical treatment, including the administration of Yanghyeolgeopung-tang, on tension headache. Case presentation: A 48-year-old man with headache and neck pain caused by tension-type headache was managed with Yanghyeolgeopung-tang, acupuncture, and pharmacopuncture for 15 days. To evaluate the improvements, a numeric rating scale (NRS), the Korean Headache Impact Test-6 (KHIT-6), and Neck Disability Index (NDI) were used. After treatment, the symptoms were relieved, and there were no particular side effects. The NRS scores reduced from 6 to 3, KHIT-6 from 64 to 48, and NDI from 46 to 22. Conclusion: These results suggest that Korean medicine may be effective for treating tension-type headache.

A Comparison of Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion versus Fusion Combined with Artificial Disc Replacement for Treating 3-Level Cervical Spondylotic Disease

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of 3-level hybrid surgery (HS), which combines fusion and cervical disc replacement (CDR), compared to 3-level fusionin patient with cervical spondylosis involving 3 levels. Methods : Patients in the anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) group (n=30) underwent 3-level fusion and the HS group (n=19) underwent combined surgery with fusion and CDR. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using the visual analogue scale for the arm, the neck disability index (NDI), Odom criteria and postoperative complications. The cervical range of motion (ROM), fusion rate and adjacent segments degeneration were assessed with radiographs. Results : Significant improvements in arm pain relief and functional outcome were observed in ACDF and HS group. The NDI in the HS group showed better improvement 6 months after surgery than that of the ACDF group. The ACDF group had a lower fusion rate, higher incidence of device related complications and radiological changes in adjacent segments compared with the HS group. The better recovery of cervical ROM was observed in HS group. However, that of the ACDF group was significantly decreased and did not recover. Conclusion : The HS group was better than the ACDF group in terms of NDI, cervical ROM, fusion rate, incidence of postoperative complications and adjacent segment degeneration.

Five Cases of Frozen Shoulder Patients Treated by Acupotomy Combined with Oriental Medical Treatments (침도시술 및 한방요법을 병행한 동결견 환자 5명의 증례보고)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the effect of acupotomy in patients with frozen shoulder. Methods : From January 1st, 2011 to March 31st, 2012, five patients who were diagnosed as frozen shoulder and admitted to Daejeon Oriental Hospital. We have treated frozen shoulder with acupotomy combined with oriental medical treatments. Then the patients were asked Numeric rating scale(NRS) and neck disability index(NDI) before and after acupotomy, and global assesment after acupotomy. Results : There were significant decreased NRS and NDI in this study. ROM, global assesment also significantly imporved in this study. Conclusions : In this study, acupotomy have an effect on frozen shoulder.

Comparative Effectiveness of Hwangryunhaedok-tang Pharmacopuncture, Essential Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture and Jungsongouhyul Pharmacopuncture for Cervical Pain caused by Traffic Accidents: A Retrospective Observational Study (교통사고 후 발생한 경항통에 대한 황련해독탕약침, 봉독약침, 중성어혈약침 치료의 효과 비교 연구: 후향적 관찰 연구)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of Hwangryunhaedok-tang Pharmacopuncture, Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture and Jungsongouhyul Pharmacopuncture on cervical pain caused by traffic accident retrospectively. Methods The retrospective observational chart review was conducted to 52 cases of traffic accident patients who had admitted to Daegu haany University Pohang Korean Hospital from December 1st, 2015 to May 31th, 2017. The patients were classified into three groups by which pharmacopuncture was used as Hwangryunhaedoktang pharmacopuncture treatment group, bee venom pharmacopuncture treatment group and Jungsongouhyul pharmacopuncture treatment group. Additionally, outcomes should include Neck disability index(NDI) and patient's global assessment(PGA) for evaluate the treatment effects. Results Each pharmacopuncture treatment group showed significant decrease of NDI and PGA. But there was no significant difference in NDI and PGA between three groups. Conclusions According to the results, we found out that 3 kinds of pharmacopunctures are considered to be effective and useful for cervical pain patients caused by traffic injury. Further well designed prospective studies are needed.
