  • Nb-Si-B alloys with Nb-rich compositions are fabricated by spark plasma sintering for high-temperature structural applications. Three compositions are selected: 75 at% Nb (Nb0.7), 82 at% Nb (Nb1.5), and 88 at% Nb (Nb3), the atomic ratio of Si to B being 2. The microstructures of the prepared alloys are composed of Nb and $T_2$ phases. The $T_2$ phase is an intermetallic compound with a stoichiometry of $Nb_5Si_{3-x}B_x$ ($0{\leq}x{\leq}2$). In some previous studies, Nb-Si-B alloys have been prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) using Nb and $T_2$ powders (SPS 1). In the present work, the same alloys are prepared by the SPS process (SPS 2) using Nb powders and hypereutectic alloy powders with composition 67at%Nb-22at%Si-11at%B (Nb67). The Nb67 alloy powders comprise $T_2$ and eutectic ($T_2+Nb$) phases. The microstructures and hardness of the samples prepared in the present work have been compared with those previously reported; the samples prepared in this study exhibit finer and more uniform microstructures and higher hardness.

  • The dynamic magnetostriction characteristics of an Fe-based nanocrystalline FeCuNbSiB alloy are investigated as a function of the dc bias magnetic field. The experimental results show that the piezomagnetic coefficient of FeCuNbSiB is about 2.1 times higher than that of Terfenol-D at the low dc magnetic bias $H_{dc}$ = 46 Oe. Moreover, FeCuNbSiB has a large resonant dynamic strain coefficient at quite low Hdc due to a high mechanical quality factor, which is 3-5 times greater than that of Terfenol-D at the same low $H_{dc}$. Based on such magnetostriction characteristics, we fabricate a new type of transducer with FeCuNbSiB/PZT-8/FeCuNbSiB. Its maximum resonant magnetoelectric voltage coefficient achieves ~10 V/Oe. The ME output power reaches 331.8 ${\mu}W$ at an optimum load resistance of 7 $k{\Omega}$ under 0.4 Oe ac magnetic field, which is 50 times higher than that of the previous ultrasonic-horn-substrate composite transducer and it decreases the size by nearly 86%. The performance indicate that the FeCuNbSiB/PZT-8/FeCuNbSiB transducer is promising for application in highly efficient magnetoelectric energy conversion.

  • Microstructural examination of the Nb-Si-B alloys at Nb-rich compositions is performed. The Nb-rich corner of the Nb-Si-B system is favorable in that the constituent phases are Nb (ductile and tough phase with high melting temperature) and $T_2$ phase (very hard intermetallic compound with favorable oxidation resistance) which are good combination for high temperature structural materials. The samples containing compositions near Nb-rich corner of the Nb-Si-B ternary system are prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process using $T_2$ and Nb powders. $T_2$ bulk phase is made in arc furnace by melting the Nb slug and the Si-B powder compact. The $T_2$ bulk phase was subsequently ball-milled to powders. SPS is performed at $1300^{\circ}C$ and $1400^{\circ}C$, depending on the composition, under 30 MPa for 600s, to produce disc-shaped specimen with 15 mm in diameter and 3 mm high. Hardness tests (Rockwell A-scale and micro Vickers) are carried out to estimate the mechanical property.

  • The reduction of the Nb content in the $(Fe_{0.75}B_{0.20}Si_{0.05})_{96}Nb_4$ bulk metallic glass (BMG) has been studied. The glass-forming ability (GFA) is reduced by decreasing the Nb content, but it can be enhanced by replacing partially Fe by Co. Furthermore, the saturation magnetization of the $(Fe_{0.8}Co_{0.2})_{76}B_{18}Si_3Nb_3$ BMG is 1.35 T, being with 13% larger than that of the base alloy $(Fe_{0.75}B_{0.20}Si_{0.05})_{96}Nb_4$. $(Fe_{0.8}Co_{0.2})_{76}B_{18}Si_3Nb_3$ BMG exhibits slightly larger $B_{800}$ (the magnetic flux density at 800 A/m) and smaller core losses (20%-30%) compared with the commercial Fe-6.5 mass% Si steel.

  • The redistribution behavior of boron during Co silicidation annealing in the Co/metal/Si system was investigated using SIMS. Ti, Nb and Hf films were used as epitaxy promoting metal layers. After annealing treatment the boron peak height was about 1 order lowered in Co/Ti/Si and Co/Nb/Si systems but the relative peak position from the surface did not change. The distribution of boron was very similar to those of Ti and Nb, because of the strong affinities of boron with them. Also, the position of the main boron peak in the Co/Hf/Si system was almost the same as that of Hf, but the distribution feature of the Co/Hf/Si system somewhat differed from those of Co/Ti/Si and Co/Nb/Si systems. This implies that the affinity between B and Hf is weaker than those of B-Ti and B-Nb. Boron tends to be depleted at the silicidelsi interface while it tends to be piled-up at the Co-metal/Co silicide interface during silicidation annealing.

  • The magnetic properties of the amorphous $Fe_{73.5-X}Co_{X}Cu_{1}Nb_{3}Si_{13.5}B_{9}(x=2,\;4)$ alloys, fabricated by a single roll rapid quenching technique and annealed at $400~650^{\circ}C$, have been investigated. The optimum annealing temperature is $550^{\circ}C$ for the amorphous $Fe_{71.5}Co_{2}Cu_{1}Nb_{3}Si_{13.5}B_{9}$ alloy. The properties of the nanocrystalline $Fe_{71.5}Co_{2}Cu_{1}Nb_{3}Si_{13.5}B_{9}$ alloy show the relative permeability of $1.1{\times}10^{4}$ and the coercive force of 0.22 Oe at 1 kHz. When annealed at $600^{\circ}C$, the nanocrystalline $Fe_{69.5}Co_{4}Cu_{1}Nb_{3}Si_{13.5)B_{9}$ alloy shows the relative permeability of $1.0{\times}10^{4}$ and the coercive force of 0.19 Oe at 1 kHz. From the X-ray measurement, it is found that the remarkably improved soft magnetic properties are the effect of the formation of $\alpha$-Fe(Si) grain. By the results of FMR exper-imeIlt, the optimum annealing condition is just below temperature which the peak-to-peak line width of FMR spectrum increase rapidly.

  • Halide-activated pack cementation was utilized to deposit B-doped silicide coating. The pack powders were consisted of $3Wt.c/oNH_4Cl$, 7Wt.c/oSi, $90Wt.c/oAl_2O_3+TiB_2$. B-doped silicide coating was consisted of two layers, an outer layer of $NbSi_2$ and an inner layer of $Nb_5Si_3$. Isothermal oxidation resistance of B-doped silicide coating was tested at $1250^{\circ}C$ in static air. B-doped silicide coating had excellent oxidation resistance, because continuous $SiO_2$ scale which serves as obstacle of oxygen diffusion was formed after oxidation.
